JOB DESCRIPTION – PROJECT ENGINEER INTERN

JOB SUMMARY

PURPOSE:
This interim entry-level construction position in Ryan’s Project Management or Field Departments
assists project teams in the completion of designated projects while focusing on learning construction
industry processes, procedures and Ryan business policies. The position objective is to educate the
student in field and office construction operations and gain real-world experience. This position
reports to the Project Manager or Project Superintendent respectively, with indirect reporting to the
Division Manager. Upon completion of the student’s tenure as a Project Engineer – Intern, the
student will return to finish their degree and/or apply for a permanent position as a Project Engineer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 Develop working understanding of budgets, cost accounting, invoices, contracts, change orders
and other management tools.
 Develop working understanding of jobsite coordination, schedules, quality control and safety.
 Develop skills in plan and model reading and working understanding of design discipline
coordination, plan development, value engineering principles and methodology to incorporate
ideas into the design process.
 Work productively with others in evaluating problems and alternatives.

JOB DETAILS

 Help generate Requests For Information (RFIs) and track approvals.


 Monitor and maintain shop drawing log and shop drawing coordination.
 Practice project dimensional control requirements while field verifying dimensions to administer
the shop drawing approval process.
 Keep office and jobsite plans updated with RFIs, ASIs, Bulletins, ITC’s, etc.
 Learn safety policies and procedures.
 Support overall site logistics and coordination.
 Gain an understanding of the city and jurisdictional permit inspection process.
 Prepare project photo documentation.
 Generate periodic project updates.
 Record, distribute and monitor completion of punchlist and other quality control inspections.
 Support the estimating process with quantity take-offs and unit cost analysis.
 Prepare minutes for the weekly construction meetings.
 Administer bid solicitations and associated correspondence.
 Gain an understanding of bid form evaluations and award procedures during bidding.
 Assist in the coordination and tracking of Vendor and Subcontractor deliveries and workforce
levels.
 Participate in updating the project schedule.
 Assist in compiling and verifying project closeout documentation.
 Conduct project tours.
 Prepare and present a summary of experiences and lessons learned to regional Project
Management staff at conclusion of internship.
 Perform additional assignments per Project Manager’s/Superintendent’s direction.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION AND ABILITIES – REQUIRED OR PREFERRED – TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

 In progress towards a 4-year college degree, preferably in a construction related field.


 General knowledge of estimating techniques and cost control methods.
 Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
 Competency in, and effective use of, computer systems to perform job responsibilities,
 Ability to read and understand contracts, specifications and architectural and engineering
drawings and models.
 Ability to assume responsibility, interface and communicate effectively.

DURATION

 Duration may vary, but terms are preferably 8 months (summer + one school term). Multiple
terms are possible, but student needs to reapply for each additional term. Summer-only terms
may be considered for students that have previously completed an 8 month internship with Ryan.
