Assignment 1
Week 1

1. Light traveling through an optical fiber of core refractive index n1 = 1.44 and clad refractive [1]
index n2 = 1.43 reaches the end of the fiber and exits into air. If the angle of incidence on the
end of the fiber is 300 , what is the angle of refraction outside the fiber?
A. 560
B. 360
C. 460
D. 340

Solution:
Given θ1 =300 , n1 = 1.44

From Snell’s Law

n1 sinθ1 = n0 sinθ0
θ0 =460

Refer to Lecture 1: Introduction to Photonics at 35:00

2. In Young’s double slit experiment, at what phase difference the interference intensity pattern [1]
shows null?, assume I1 = I2 = I0 .
A. π/2
B. π
C. 2π
D. 0

Solution:
The total interference intensity can be expressed as
I =2I0 (1 + cos ∆ϕ).
Refer to Lecture 2: Diffraction and Interference 35:00

3. For a diffraction grating illuminated with white light, which color would get diffracted more [1]
A. Blue
B. Green
C. Red
D. Yellow
4. Which one of the following graphs shows the appropriate variation of refractive index (n) with [1]
wavelength (λ)?

A. (a)
B. (b)
C. (c)
D. (d)

Solution:
v
λ= f
where
c
v=
n

5. Suppose a ray of light undergoes reflection at a planar mirror interface, then the ‘D’ component [1]
of the ABCD matrix would be 1 .? (range -1 to 1)

Solution:
θ2 = θ1
y2 = y1

Refer to Lecture 2: Diffraction and Interference 15:00

6. Ray optics fails eventually when d >> λ ,where d is the dimension of the aperture and λ is [1]
operating wavelength.
A. True
B. False

Solution: Ray optics fails eventually when the aperture diameter (d) is close to operating
wavelength or less than that.

7. Assertion: When the light goes from air medium to glass medium, velocity and wavelength [1]
will reduce, but frequency and colour remain same.
Reason: The colour of light would not change inside glass medium even though the wave-
length reduced. Because, human eye perceives colour by energy of light which is directly
proportional to the frequency.
A. Both Assertion and Reason are correct, Reason is correct explanation of
Assertion
B. Assertion is correct but the Reason is not correct
C. Both Assertion and reason are wrong
D. Assertion is wrong but the Reason is correct

8. From the following figure What is the angle D in degrees ? 100 .(range 100 to 100) [1]

Solution:

9. If an air-clad water spout (n=1.33) is used to guide light, the maximum incident angle (de- [1]
grees) that light can enter into the water spout is 61.26 .(range 60 to 62)(one decimal
accuracy)

Page 4
EE5500 Introduction to Photonics Jul - Nov 2022

Solution:
Given n1 =1.33, n0 = 1

The maximum angle would be the acceptance angle

q
−1
N A = sin (n21 − n20 )
θ0 =61.260

Refer to Lecture 1: Introduction to Photonics 30:00

10. A collimated light source (plane wave) consisting of two wavelengths illuminate a doubleslit [1]
experiment simultaneously. One has a wavelength of 500 nm and the second has an un-
known wavelength. The m=5 bright fringe of the unknown wavelength overlaps with the m=4
bright fringe of the light at wavelength 500 nm. The unknown wavelength (nm) should be
400 .??(range 390 to 410)

Solution:
To get a bright fringe in double slit exp.
dsinθ = mλ
4
λ2 = × 500 × 10−9
5
= 400nm
