Module 5
Practice Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Procedures
(OS)
Animators do get sick. We are not invincible. We are only human. Unfortunately, upon writing this
module, we are on a global pandemic of Covid19. Despite this, people need to work to feed themselves.
Hence, we simply have to protect ourselves. It is the observance and practice of OHS and its procedures that
will keep us away from harm.
Let’s delve into the main lesson but before that, let us review first about LESSON 5: PREPARE AND
INTERPRET TECHNICAL DRAWING (ID)

Lesson 1
We define a hazard as an agent that can cause harm to humans, the environment, and to property.
Risk, on the other hand, is the probability that when humans, the environment, and the property were exposed
to hazard will have negative effects. To lower the risk of hazards, we must employ safety practices. These are
the things that we do to keep ourselves safe. Safety is the responsibility of everyone, although the
management is always the one taking the initiative. The hazard risks are different from one industry to
another. Those who work for the mining industry have greater hazard risks compared to office workers.
Because of this, different industries have their own measures for hazards and risk control. There are different
kinds of hazards to work and having knowledge about this is beneficial for your survival. These different
hazards are the following:
1. Physical Hazards. This kind of hazard is the most common in all kinds of work. Included in
this category are the noise, slips, falls that happen in the workplace. To prevent physical
hazards, clean your workplace before you start to work. Broom and mop the floor so it is not
slippery. Big companies have their own janitorial services but in spite of it, whenever we see
that there is rubbish on the floor, it won’t be bad if we pick it up. The risk indicator for a
physical hazard would be floors that are a dirty and slippery and messy arrangement of
furniture and fixtures at the workplace.
2. Ergonomic Hazards. This kind of hazard is a form of physical hazard but focuses especially
on the factors that harm the musculoskeletal system like poor posture, wrong turn or
movement of a part of a body, wrong lifting of things related to work. To prevent ergonomic
hazards, rest your body for quite some time. If you are sitting for more hours already, try to
take a small break like drinking some water or go to the comfort room to pee. Some stretching
would also help. If you are going to lift something heavy, take it slowly or ask someone if you
can’t lift it alone. The risk indicator for an ergonomic hazard would be employees that are
stressed and overworked.
4. Biological Hazards. This kind of hazard pertains to those viruses and bacteria that can cause
disease to a person. An employee could be sick and he could infect his coworkers. Poor
hygiene in places of work can also contribute to this. To prevent biological hazards, some
protocols must be observed like frequent washing or sanitation of hands, disinfection of the
work area on a regular basis, and attending to the medical needs of a sick employee. The risk
indicator for a biological hazard aside from those I’ve already mentioned would be not proper
segregation of garbage and not providing plenty of water and soap to the company’s comfort
room.
The best approach in dealing with Hazard and Risks Prevention is having a concrete plan. The
management of any company should work for it. In making a Hazard and Risks Plan, one should consider the
following:
1. Identifying where the risks are. The management must brainstorm where they think there are dangers
and why. Then, they should write some provisions on how it can be prevented.

3
2. Determine how employees can be at risk. The company can ask the employees as well what they
think can harm them and the company. Sometimes, employees do also have better ideas in dealing
with Hazard and Risks Prevention.
3. Evaluate the risk. The management is responsible for this job. They need to assess all possible risks
and make some protocols to make their employees safe.
4. Record and Review Hazards. The management should record and review if there were accidents that
happened in a year and always make some recommendations to improve the safety protocols.

Note: If you score 50% or more of the Self-check, then, you’re learning just right. Otherwise, you might want
to spend some time reading the text and re-taking the quiz until you gain the mastery of the lesson.
Lesson 2
The classification of hazards was already previously discussed. We are about to discuss now the
effects of hazards and risks. The effects of Hazards and Risks in the Workplace include changes in body
functions, stress, illnesses, health problems, etc. To determine the magnitude of the possible effects, you
need to answer some questions. These include the following:
1. What hazards are present. If you are working in a chemical laboratory, the danger is different than
when you are working in a financial district. You are not likely to have chemical poisoning if you work
on the latter.
2. How a person is exposed. If you are using a photocopy machine yourself in your company, you are
exposed to a potential carbon monoxide inhalation but your amount of exposure is less compared than
when your job is really the photocopy machine operator.
3. What kind of effect could result from that specific exposure? If you work in a hospital laboratory, you
could get laboratory-acquired diseases if you won’t be careful and observe safety protocols. Different
works, however, have different effects and exposure when it comes to hazards and risks. Athletes
have more exposure to physical injury compared to others.
4. The likelihood that a particular hazard could cause an injury. During summer, it really gets hot in the
Philippines. The likelihood for workers who are exposed to sunlight to get heatstroke is high. Because
of this, construction companies and other industries advise their workers to avoid sunlight especially
during peak hours and just go with some other tasks of their work.
5. How severe would the damage or injury be? If you expose yourself to sunlight, it’s not like you’re
going to die right away, not like when you fall from the top of a building. The more severe a particular
hazard would cause, the more protection we should give on it. Those who are working that are dealing
with heights should work with a suspender. They should have the appropriate insurance if accidents
happen.
Activity 2
Form a group of 3 or 5 if you prefer. It could be your classmates, neighbors, or members of the family
then determine the magnitude of the possible effects of hazards and risks if you will be working as a computer
animator in a business district of Makati.

Lesson 3
Chapter III of the Republic Act No. 11058 also known as “An Act Strengthening Compliance with
Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof” provides for most
Safety Regulations that are implemented in the country. These regulations include:
1. Equip a place of employment for workers free from hazardous conditions that are causing or
are likely to cause death, illness, or physical harm to the workers. The management should
always prioritize the safety of their employees above anything else. The company has to earn but it
should not be at the expense of sacrificing the welfare of the employees.
2. Provide complete job safety instructions and proper orientation to all workers including, but
not limited to, those relating to familiarization with their work environment. The management
should have orientation programs on its new employees and one of the pieces of training they should
have is how to make themselves safe at work.
3. Ensure that, so far as is reasonably practicable, the chemical, physical and biological
substances and agents, and ergonomic and psychosocial stresses under their control are
without risk to health when the appropriate measures of protection are taken. The management
should make protocols on how to eliminate the different kinds of hazards and risks at work as much as
possible.
4. Use only approved specific industry set of standards of devices and equipment for the
workplace, as applicable. The management must procure devices and equipment that are safe for
humans. They should also provide training on their employees how these machines operate.
5. Comply with OSH standards including training, medical examination, and when necessary,
provisions on protective and safety devices such as PPE and machine guards. Training for
workers shall include health promotion, hazards associated with their work, health risks
involved or to which they are exposed to, preventive measures to eliminate or minimize risks,
steps to be taken in cases of emergency, and safety instructions for the jobs, activities, and
tasks to be handled by workers. The management must comply with the safety standards set up by
DOLE. These include a lot of things like requiring PPE to employees, providing medical examinations,
and making provisions on different aspects of work.

6. Make arrangements for workers and their representatives to have the time and resources to
participate actively in the processes of organizing, planning, and implementation, monitoring,
evaluation, and action for improvement of the OSH management system. The management
should encourage its employees to participate in its safety program. There should be representation
from its employees during safety planning conducted by the management.
7. Provide, when necessary, for measures identifying training and drills, evacuation plans, etc., to
deal with emergencies, fires, and accidents including first-aid arrangements. The management
should identify safety training that is needed by the employees including those related to dealing with
emergencies, fires, and first-aid.
8. Comply with all reportorial requirements of the OSH standards. The management must comply
with the OSH standards set up by DOLE or they will be held liable as there is already a legal basis for
this.
9. Register establishment to DOLE as provided under the OSH standards. The management should
apply their establishment for the issuance of their safety permits to operate. This is mandatory by law.
The use of PPE doesn’t only provide identification for an employee but protects him as well on
potential dangers of work. Different works and industries have their own set of PPEs. The uniforms of
Animators are different from one another. It depends on what company he works for. If he works for a
corporate world, he should be wearing business attire. If he works for just an independent animation company,
he could just be wearing casual clothes. Whatever clothes he’s wearing during work, the following PPEs
should be a part of his attire:
1. Hairnet. Whatever your sex is, male or female, having longhair is cumbersome when you draw. You
are not free to move much when you are distracted by your longhair especially when it hits your
digitizer or some of your hair falls to the digitizer. Some artists may argue that their hair is a part of
their expression but you should not do it especially when you are a beginner. You could probably do it
later when your drawing skills have already improved.
2. Drawing Eyeglasses. Some unexpected irritants might enter your eyes while drawing. To avoid this,
you better wear some drawing eyeglasses.
3. Drawing Gloves. Your hands might sweat eventually and it can alter the surface of your digitizer.
Wearing drawing gloves could prevent this.
Different companies have different protocols when it comes to dealing with emergencies. The
management should explain this to their employees at the very beginning of their work. Working as
Department Head for TLE for quite some time, when an emergency happens, I would usually inform the School
Head of the nature of the emergency and then, she gives a decision regarding it or whether it can be attended
by a particular person. This is our protocol. Your company could have a different one. You should follow it. In
case you are alone and you can’t report the emergency right away, follow these steps:
1. Take a deep breath. It helps you calm especially when you are panicking.
2. Count to 10. This will buy you some time to think about possible solutions to the emergency.
3. Try to look at the situation as a whole. What could be the most serious problem that you must first
attend to? After it, what could be the next problems to solve. Do this until all the problems are solved.
