Round 1 Questions

This document provides information about the format and scoring of a math competition for year 10 students. It includes two rounds - one on ordering problems and one on solving problems. The ordering round has students calculate answers and place them in order on a grid, with partial credit given for correct answers and additional credit for correct sequencing. The solving round has students find values of variables in 8 problems. Answers are recorded on provided tables, with space for answers outside the given ranges.

Round 1 – Ordering (28 marks)

How this round works

Two sets, each of eight questions

Calculate all the answers (or attempt to!)

Decide where to write the answers on the answer grid

For the answers For the answers For the answers in

inside the range, outside the range, doubt (for any
list these in the write these in the reason), write these in
correct order extra table the extra table too

Marking Correct answers: one mark each

Order: for the longest correctly ordered sequence, one mark each letter

For example:

Letter Answer
B 28.7  =1 mark Largest 30 Extra table for answers
outside the range
or in doubt
G 8√10  =1 mark
F 25.4  =0 mark Letter Answer
D 22.1  =1 mark C 23  =1 mark
A 20.9  =1 mark E 6√8  =0 mark
H 20  =1 mark Smallest 20

correct answers: 6 marks • correct order here should be BGCDAH,

then E and F in extra table
correct order: 3 marks
• If their order had been BGDAH it would get
(for sequence DAH) 5 marks for ‘correct order but one missing’

SET 1 Calculate the area of each shape in centimetres squared then

complete the answer sheet.
• You should not leave your answers in terms of 𝜋𝜋
• You can leave your answers in surds if the number is irrational (still in cm2).
