Communication in the Workplace

1. Analyze the barriers exemplified according to your observation.

Mark is a social worker, and he has a client with mild intellectual disability. During their session,
Mark jumps quickly from topic to topic, using academic expressions and jargon. Jay, his client,
becomes upset and has trouble expressing his thoughts. Mark then tells Jay to take his time; he is
there to help. But Mark kept looking at the clock and checking his diary. Jay feels that he must
be slow; and his self-esteem plummets.
From the given scenario, I can say that Mark was unable to fully engage with his client, Jay. The
first communication barrier that can be observe is Information Overload. Mark’s frequent
jumping from one topic to another resulted Jay not being able to express his thought and thus,
making him becoming stressed and upset. Mark should’ve been sensitive to observe that his
client was having difficulties coping on topics that he was tackling. He should be more
considerate knowing that his client has mild intellectual disability. Another communication
barrier that I observed was Communication skills, styles and information. I noticed that Mark
used academic expressions and jargon making it impossible for Jay to understand the words that
he was saying. If I were Mark, I should have used simple words so that Jay can easily understand
me. Another noticeable manner that Mark displayed was, when he was consistently looking at
the clock and his diary. When communicating, we need to focus to the person we are talking with
to show our compassion to them.

2. Analyze the barriers exemplified according to your observation.

Today, you are just not interested in what your colleague has to say. You normally listen to her
problems and do what you can to help her, but you are more worried about your mother’s illness.
When you ask her to repeat something, she accuses you of ignoring her. You would love to point
out that she never takes your advice anyway.

In this scenario, the communication barriers were Disengagement and Listening. As the
colleague tells her problem, I was unable to listen to her mainly because I chose not to be
interested in her story and also worrying my mother’s illness at the same time and even given the
fact that she never takes the advices that I give to her whenever she consults me. When
conversing, even though we have valid reason not to listen and to engage, we should at least
show our empathy towards the person we are talking. It may be unavoidable but we should also
communicate with the person we are talking and explain our side in a good way so that they can
understand us as well. I believe communication is a two way process wherein we actively listen
and at the same time respond to the person we are talking. A conversation should not be bias
wherein only one person should be acknowledged.

5. Explain this reminder in the context of academic integrity.
“We learned about honesty and integrity– that the truth matter, that you don’t take shortcuts or
play by your own set of rules… and success doesn’t count unless you earn.
The significance of maintaining academic integrity in the framework of education is emphasized
by this reminder. Honesty, veracity, and moral behavior in educational activities are among the
principles that comprise academic integrity. Upholding strong ethical standards in academic
work is important, since the reminder emphasizes that "the truth matters" and discourages the use
of shortcuts or personal rule-setting. It highlights the idea that achievement attained by unethical
means is ultimately meaningless and devoid of real merit. Rather, genuine achievement is
obtained by means of our hard work, dedication, and dedication to moral values. This
corresponds to an honest approach to coursework, research, and examinations in the academic
setting without turning to plagiarism, cheating, or other types of academic misconduct.
