Week 1 – Assignment 1

Hefty Hardware Case Study

At Hefty Hardware, the partnership between IT and the business is not effective and
needs to be improved. It is highly important to have a strong collaboration between IT and
business leaders to apply digital transformation on business strategies in order to improve
business operations, customer satisfaction thus keeping the organization ahead of its competitors
and generating revenue to the company.

Some of the major shortcomings that hinders effective partnership between IT and the
business are understanding of technical/ business needs, processes followed, communication,
leadership and decision making. Resolving these shortcomings would help both IT and the
business to deliver the projects successfully thus contributing to the growth of the organization.
The plans or strategies that can be followed by IT and the business to prevent these shortcomings
are mentioned as below:

1. Understanding of technical/ business needs:

To prevent this shortcoming, when working on any project/ task, an IT employee should clearly
understand the business need and value before staring the development. The business leader
should take the ownership and regularly review the progress of the project during development
phase and can change requirements if needed during the initial stages itself rather than after
completion of the project. Also, in case of any technical or other issues, both the IT and business
leaders should closely work together to come up with a solution or workaround that fits for both
the business and IT department.

2. Processes followed:
It is very important for an IT department to prioritize and balance the new projects,
enhancements, support and maintenance of existing systems, applications, hardware and
software. Business leaders should also have a clear understanding about the business value/
revenue generated on completion of a project, gather requirements that fits business need as well
as laws/ regulations and set up project milestones. Both the IT and business leaders should
together build a plan for completing these tasks based on the need, business value, resources and
timelines.

3. Communication:
In case of any communication gap between priorities, requirements rather than working based on
assumptions, the best approach is always to communicate to understand better and resolve
conflicts. This will help the employees to focus on right tasks and complete them in an efficient
manner on time.

4. Leadership and decision making:

For successful completion of a project, the IT leaders should have a clear understanding about
the business functionality and design the project by choosing latest efficient methods and
technologies available in the market that serves business needs by building secure and quality
application, speeds up the delivery of the project and also considering cost of the project,

business expansion by adding new products functionality based on current and future market
