CHAPTER 1:VECTOR ALGEBRA

1. If a vector A = ax + 2 ay + 3 az , find its magnitude A and direction.

2. Given A = 2 ax + 5 ay +6 az
B = -3 ay + 6 az
Find A + B and A – B

3. Vector A starts at point (1,-1,-2) and ends at point (2,-1,0). Find a unit vector in the direction
of A.

4. Find the vector A directed from (2, -4, 1) to (0, -2, 0) in Cartesian coordinates and find the unit
vector along A.

5. Given that
A = 2 ax − ay − 2 az
B = 4 ax + 3 ay + 2 az
C = −ax + ay + 2 az
Find
a) AB
b) BC
c) cos AB
d) sin BC
e) B  (C  A)
f) C  (A  B)

6. Given vectors
D = 2ax − 3ay + az
E = 2ax − ay + 3az
F = 4ax + 2ay − 2az

Show that F is perpendicular to both D and E

7. Given

A = 2 ax – 3 ay + az
B = Bx ax +2ay +Bz az

(a) Find Bx and Bz if A is parallel to B.

(b) Find a relation between Bx and Bz if A is perpendicular to B.

8. Let A =  ax + 3 ay – 2 az and B = 4 ax +  ay + 8 az.

a) Find  and  if A and B are parallel.
b) Determine the relationship between  and  if B is perpendicular to A.
