FOREWORD

In 1921, theAmerican EngineeringStandardsCommittee, later the AmericanStandards

Association (ASA) and currently the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), authorized
the organization of a Sectional Committee onthe Standardization of Pipe Flanges and
Flanged Fittings, withthe followingorganizations as jointsponsors:Heating, Piping, and
Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (later the Mechanical Contractors Associa-
tion of America, MCAA), Manufacturers Standardization Society of the Valves and Fittings
Industry (MSS), and The American Society of MechanicalEngineers(ASME).
Threaded fittings were also included in the scope of the B 16 Committee, and Subcommittee
Number 2 (nowSubcommittee B) wasmade responsible for threaded fittings other than
steel. The first edition of a standard covering malleable iron fittings, 150 lb,was approved
as American TentativeStandard by ASAin December1927. In 1936,a revision was

--`,`,``,```,,`,,,,`,`,```,``,,-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
undertakento addhydraulic service ratings, material specifications, alignment tolerances,
and dimensions for additional sizes. It was approved with the designation American Standard
B 1 6 ~1939.
-
Pipe plugs, bushings, and locknuts, included in thefirst editions, are now covered in a
separate standard, B 16.14.
A revisionbegun in 1947 amplified the sections on threading, inspection, and tolerances,
and added dimensions for additional sizes of elbows, reducing crosses, reducing tees, straight
and reducingcouplings, caps, and return bends. Itwas approved as ASA B16.3-195 1.
Meanwhile, MSS, in cooperation withthe Association of AmericanRailroads(AAR),
developed the first standard for 300 lb malleable iron threaded fittings, published as MSS
SP-31 of 1932. The 1950 edition of SP-31, which agreed withAAR Purchase Specification
M-404, was submitted toASA SectionalCommittee BI6 and assigned to Subcommittee
Number 2. After balloting, it was approved as aseparated standard, ASA B16.19-1951.
Work wasbegunto combine thetwo standards (for 150 lband 300 lb) into a single
document in 1961.The resulting Standard was approved asASA B16.3-1963.Subsequent
reviews ofthe Standard, leading to revisions approved as ANSI B16.3-1971 andANSI
B16.3-1977, involved updating of referencedstandards and the introduction of metric (SI)
dimensions and ratings. Inthe1977 edition, 150 lb and 300 lb were redesignated as Class
150 and Class300.
In 1982, American National Standards Committee B16 became the ASME B16 Standards
Committee,operating withthe samescopeunderASMEproceduresaccredited by ANSI.
A further revision of the standard, approvedandpublished as ANSVASME B16.3-1985,
provided for electrodeposition asan alternative to hot dipping when zinccoating was
required.
The 1992 edition of B 16.3 omitsmetric units, establishing U.S. customary units as the
standard. Clarifications and editorial revisions were made in order to improve the text.
Followingapproval by the StandardsCommittee and ASME, the 1992 edition received
approval as anAmericanNational StandardonDecember 2, 1992, with the designation
ASME B16.3-1992.
In the1998 edition of ASME B16.3, the References section hasbeen updated, a Quality
SystemProgram Annexhasbeen added, and several editorial revisions have been made.

GENERAL NOTES:
(a) Dimensions are in inches.
(b) Right- and left-hand pattern couplings are standard only in sizes up to and including NPS 2.
NOTES:
~.
Dimension M for all reduction of reducing couplings (concentric only) shall be the same as shown for the largest opening.
Dimension M for eccentric couplings is not standard; such information should be obtained from the manufacturer.
Couplings NPS and smaller may be cast or made from steel rod with a minimum yield strength of 30 ksi at the option
of the manufacturer.
Steel couplings are made without recess. Dimension 8 for steel couplings is minimum length of perfect thread, and the
length of useful thread ( 8 plus threads with fully formed roots and flat crests) shall be not less thanL2 (effective length of
external thread) required by ASME 81.20.1,Pipe Threads, General Purpose (Inch). See Section 7.
