Lab Report 6

The document describes an experiment to verify Hooke's Law by measuring the extension of a spring under increasing loads. A table of results is presented showing the relationship between extension force and spring extension is linear. The spring constant is calculated from the gradient of a graph of extension vs force. Work and energy stored in the spring are also calculated.

Objective:
To verify the accuracy of Hooke’s Law.

Apparatus:
Helical steel spring with supporting stand and scale, set of slotted weight with hanger, weight
balance.

Procedure:
1. The mass of hanger was measured and recorded.
2. The weight of the hanger is calculated and recorded as W in the table.
3. 10 g mass was loaded to the hanger. The scale reading ( x 1) was recorded.
4. The load was keep increasing by suitable increment to obtain 8 data points before
the lower end of the scale is reached. All the data was recorded (W and x 1).
5. The extension of the spring, ∆ x was calculated.
6. The extension force acted on the spring (F) for each total loads was determined.

Results:

Scale reading (without load), x 0= 5.8cm

Analysis:
1. Plot a graph of the force causing the extension, F , against the extension, x . Calculate
gradient of the graph. What value does the gradient represents?

∴ m=k =spring constant

2. How much work done in stretching the spring the through 0.02 m? Find this from the
graph.
Extension force from the graph: 1.65N
w=Fd
w=(1.65)(0.02)
w=0.033 J
3. How much energy stored in the spring when it is extended to 0.02 m?

4. Describe any errors that may have occurred during this experiment.
During this experiment, errors that may occur during the experiment is parallax
errors. This is because the eyes may not in meniscus and not perpendicular with the
reading that may resulting in incorrect reading.
5. What can you describe from your result about the relationship between the extension
of a spring and the force causing extension?
Based on the result obtain, The extension of spring is increasing linearly with the
force

Discussion:
From the result that we obtained in the table, the relationship of the extension force
and extension of spring is increasing linearly. The gradient that we obtain from the
graph is spring constant, k. During the experiment, there is an error that occurred
such as parallax error. This is because the eyes may not in meniscus and not
perpendicular with the reading that may resulting in incorrect reading.

Conclusion:
The accuracy of Hooke’s Law had been verified.
