RAMAKRISHNA MISSION RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), NARENDRAPUR.

B.Sc. Semester II Examination, 2021

STATISTICS HONOURS

Paper: CC3

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Please read the following instructions carefully and act accordingly

1. Time allotted for Group A and B is 2 hours and for Group C is 2 hours.
2. Use a separate answer script for each group.
3. Write clearly your NAME and COLLEGE ROLL NUMBER at the top of each answer script.
4. Give the page numbers for each answer script of each group.
5. You must not answer more than the required number of questions to be answered. The
extra answers will not be checked by the examiners.
6. After the end of your examination you will have to scan clearly the answer scripts and you
are required to send them in pdf files, one file for each group separately, through the
email id: [email protected] by 4.30 p.m. positively.
7. If your college Roll number is e.g. STUG/023/20 then give the file name for Group A answer
script as A023.CC3, for Group B as B023.CC3 & for Group C as C023.CC3.
8. If you feel any difficulty then you may contact the co-ordinating teachers of the paper.

THEORY Full Marks: 50 Time: 2 hours (12 noon to 2 p.m.)

GROUP A (Descriptive Statistics II, 25 marks)

1. Answer any one of the following : (5 X 1)

(i) Derive an expression for the goodness of fit of a polynomial to a given bivariate data.
What additional computation do you require for it?
(ii) Explain the concept of fundamental set, consistent data and incomplete data in
connection to m attributes each having two forms.

2. Answer any two of the following : (10 X 2)

2 2 2 2
(i) Construct data set for which eyx = r = 1 and eyx = r ≠ 1. State and prove the
necessary result.
(ii) Suppose both the characters are measurable. Construct data set for which rank
correlation would take the value 1. State and prove the necessary result. How can you
extend this result if both characters are not measurable but can be gauzed in ordinal scale?
State the demerits of Spearman’s rank correlation as contrasted to Kendall’s τ.
(iii) What does intraclass correlation measure? Derive its formula for classes of equal size.
Why is it called a skew measure of correlation?
(iv) Describe the rationale behind logistic regression. Give interpretations of the parameters
involved.
GROUP B (Real Analysis II, 25 marks)

3. Answer any one of the following : (5 X 1)

x2+ y2
if x + y ≠ 0
(i) Let f x, y = x +y
0 if x + y = 0.
Determine if f is continuous at (0,0).

, 0 <𝑥<𝑦<1
(ii) Let f x, y = 1
− x2 , 0 < 𝑦 < 𝑥 < 1.
Evaluate two repeated integrals over B = [0,1] x [0,1].Comment on the existence of
double integral B
f x, y dxdy.

4. Answer any two of the following : (10 X 2)

x3+ y3
𝑖𝑓 x, y ≠ (0,0)
(i) Let f x, y = x2+ y2
0 if x, y = 0,0 .
Determine the continuity and differentiability at (0,0).
Find the value of the integral A
x 2 exy dxdy where A is the region bounded by the
straight lines y = x, y = 0, and x = 1.
1 2 x2
(ii) Evaluate the integral ( e dx)dy.
0 2y
Given a data set {(xi, yi), i = 1(1)n}, where all xi’s are not equal, find a and b such that
f(a, b) = ni=1(yi − a − bxi )2 is minimised.
xy
𝑖𝑓 x, y ≠ (0,0)
(iii) Let f x, y = x2+ y2
0 if x, y = 0,0 .
Show that fx(0,0), fy(0,0) exist but f is not continuous at (0,0).
Evaluate D
x l−1 y m−1 (1 − x − y)p−1 dxdy, where D is the region bounded by x = 0,
y = 0 and x + y = 1.
(iv) Find the global minimum value of the function g(x,y) = 2(x – 2)2 + 3(y – 1)2, in the region
R = {(x,y): 0 ≤ x ≤ y ≤ 3}. Also find the point(s) at which it is attained.
Show that (0,0) is neither a point of local minimum nor a point of local maximum for
f(x,y) = 3x4 – 4x2y + y2, for (x,y) ϵ R2.
