Get the vocalist ready

❏ Ask the singer to practice along to the headphone mix

❏ Make any necessary adjustments to levels, reverb and volume

Finding the right mic

❏ Record a verse and chorus on all of the mics at the same time

❏ Listen back to the recording with the vocalist, producer etc.

❏ Complete the mic analysis worksheet and choose the best mix

❏ Take down the other microphones that you aren’t using

❏ Set up all of the appropriate accessories on your chosen mic

Perfect mic placement every time

❏ Record a verse with the singer standing around 5 inches away

❏ Record the same verse at a longer distance (around 10 inches)

❏ Record the same verse at a closer distance (around 3 inches)

❏ Decide which extreme sounds better and find a good halfway point

❏ Nasal sound? Lower the mic to neck level and aim it at the chin

❏ Sibilance/plosives? Move the mic above or below mouth level

Setting levels and outboard

❏ Ask the vocalist to sing the loudest part of the song

❏ Set the gain so that the level averages around -20dbFS

❏ If you have any outboard equipment, adjust to taste now

Take managment

❏ Remember to create a new playlist for every take if using Pro Tools

❏ Remind yourself of your DAW’s take management functionality

Getting the best performance and efficient recording

❏ Record a warm up take

❏ Complement the vocalist

❏ Ask the vocalist to read the lyrics and think about their meaning

❏ Prepare your comp sheets and a pen

❏ Record 2 full takes whilst taking notes on your comp sheet

2
Recording Checklist

❏ Take a 10 minute break

❏ Record 1-3 more full takes (take notes on your comp sheet)

❏ Check you have at least one full take that is mostly perfect

❏ Drop in for any sections where you are lacking a ‘VG’ or ‘10’ rating

Backing vocals, ensembles, choirs and double tracking

❏ Ask the backing vocalists to take a step back before recording

❏ If that doesn’t work, try rotating the microphone 20-90 degrees

❏ If recording a small ensemble, use a matched X/Y pair

❏ If recording a larger choir, use an X/Y pair and a spaced pair

❏ If double tracking, ask the vocalist to get slightly closer/further
