A program, or software, consists of a series of related instructions, organized for a common
purpose, that tells the computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them 2. An application, or app, sometimes called application software, consists of programs designed to make users more productive and/or assist them with personal tasks 3. First, an operating system user interface is displayed on the screen when a user turns on a computer. The user instructs the operating system to run an application, such as a word processing application, which appears on the user’s screen. The user then instructs the application to print a document. The application sends the print instruction to the computer’s operating system(software), which is running on the computer. The operating system sends the print instructions to the printer(hardware) which prints the document. 4. • search for popular shareware, freeware, and public-domain download websites; • look for websites with programs for your particular type of computer or mobile device; • obtain the latest versions of shareware, freeware, and public-domain software; • locate websites with a variety of programs in a specific category; and read ratings for and reviews of products. 5. • Native app – It is an app written for a specific platform and installed on a computer or mobile device. Most features may work without Internet connection. Distributed in apps market place or other location on the Internet. E.g. Apps for Windows, Apple, Android…. • Cloud/web app – It requires browsers and Internet connection, makes used of software and data that are not stored on users’ computer or mobile device, with responsive web design to cater for different device sizes. 6. • Freeware - Copyrighted software that may be used free of charge. Author retains copyright. May place restrictions on its use. May not be altered or redistributed without permission . • Open source software - Programs with source code available to the general public. Other programmers can modify and redistribute the programs freely. • Public domain software - Software that is not copyrighted. May be used and even altered without permission. Typically developed by universities and/or research institutions using government grants. 7. Custom software – performs functions specific to a business or industry. Retail /commercial software - Copyrighted software developed, usually by a commercial company, for sale to others. 8.
