3.3. Digital filter in general

The weighing instrument is used for most diverse applications under most
diverse environmental influences.

Weighings: static; dynamic; in-motion

application of load without/with vibrations
Ambient disturbing influences by the environment
conditions: vibrations: none/little/medium/heavy

To achieve accurate weight values at optimal stabilization times regardless

of varying environmental conditions, the system operates with a digital filter.

3.4. Digital filter for DMS (strain gauge) load cell
The adaptable memory filter on the basis of the filter theory according to
Kalman provides for low damping in the event of load changes and high
damping in case that steady loads are involved. By adjusting the four
parameters kalan, kalen, pd_nm and pd_ds, the filter may be used for diverse
applications, i. e.
− normal operation: static, dynamic and in-motion weighing
− special operation: filling

3.4.1. Overview of filter parameters

Menu Parameters Range of Application

step values
X40 kalan 1 to 16 Normal operation
X41 kalen 1 to 16 Normal operation
X42 pd_nm 5 to 50 Normal operation
X43 pd_ds 0 or Filling operation
5 to 50

3.4.2. Kalman parameters: kalan, kalen

kalan: Acts in the range of steady loads and determines the initial intensity of
damping.
High value: Low damping
Low damping is set when the application of load
involves vibrations and/or under difficult environmental
conditions.
Low value: High damping
High damping is set when the application of load does
not involve vibrations and under good environmental
conditions.
kalen: Acts in the range of steady loads and determines the increase in
damping.
High value: Damping increases slowly.
A slow increase in damping is set when the scale
stabilizes quickly after load change.
Low value: Damping increases quickly.
A quick increase in damping is set when the scale
stabilizes slowly after load change.
General recommendation for the two parameters:
• kalan = medium high: 6 to 10
• kalen = low: 1 to 4

-44- 6.457.98.6.01.01
ST/ST-Ex Service menu PARAMETERS FOR DIGITAL FILTER
AND WEIGHING OPERATIONS
3.4.3. Memory parameters 'pd_nm', 'pd_ds'

pd_nm: High value: High damping

High damping causes a slow changeover on load
change.
Low value: Low damping
Proven values: 8 to 12 for in-motion weighing
10 to 18 for static weighing
15 to 40 for overhead track weighing

pd_ds: Damping of gradient forming. Special operation: filling

High value: High damping
High damping causes long transition period from
normal to filling operation.
Low value: Low damping
Low damping causes a short transition period from
normal to filling operation.
Proven values: 40 to 50.

General recommendation for the two parameters:

Value = multiple medium period of time of the measuring signal x 0.01 seconds.

3.4.4. Setting of pd_nm parameters

First setting: kalan = 1, kalen = 1
Display of weight value at a slow load change: reduce pd _nm.
Display of weight value after an unsteady load change: increase pd_nm.

3.4.5. Setting of kalan and kalen parameters

Second setting: kalan = 8, kalen = 2
After a change of load the scale should be observed for a brief moment.
The display deviates from the actual weight value: increase kalan, do not
change kalen or reduce kalen.
The display value varies: reduce kalan, do not change kalen or increase kalen.

3.4.6. Setting of pd_ds parameters for filling

Display of weight value is unstable: increase pd_ds.
Display of weight value at a slow change of the dosing material flow: reduce
pd_ds.

3.8. Weighing operation, in-motion

The material to be weighed is conveyed along the scale via a power-driven
conveying system. The weight values are determined during conveying of the
material.

In-motion weighing, timing of application and withdrawal of loads

Control time (menu step X07)

Period of mean weight value calculation (menu step X17)
Becomes necessary if the material to be weighed does not sufficiently
stabilize during the control period.
The duration will be set to an integer multiple of the interfering frequency,
e. g. to the shaft speed.
The position of the calculation is set via the control time and relevant
duration, in order to ensure that impacts caused by loading and unloading
of weight pieces do not influence the calculation of the mean value.

When the light barrier input signal ‘Start in-motion weighing’

(function No. 8 or 10) is output, the ADC reference activations will be
suppressed at the beginning of the blanking phase and item recording, adding
or the F3 command sequences will be started at the transition phase
‘dark/light’.

The forced recording procedure with the mean value calculation of the weight
value will be initiated by the output of the signal ‘forced recording’ (function No.
7) or with the next following blanking phase of the light barrier input signal.
If the function No. 10 has been assigned to the light barrier input signal, ‘start
in-motion weighing’ will be initiated with F3 command sequences (section 2.7.).
The ADC reference activations are enabled again at the end of fixation or with
the forced recording signal (function No. 7).

All system and weighing data of the weighing terminal ST is organized in the
Central Data Field (CDF).
A CDF number used to parameterize images and records is assigned to each
data value.

For bar code inputs, the CDF numbers must be delimited with CR (CDF No.
97) before other control characters can be appended (CDF Nos. 96, 98,99).

CDF numbers 51 to 53:

When using the EDP/Profibus command 'q%' in parameterizing, the actual
weight value of the scale will always be output for these values.

CDF numbers 110 to 112:

The bar code numbers 1 to 3 are assigned with required bar codes from the
central data fields 100 to 106 via the bar code settings/presettings (section

The CDF No. for the character height applies to the complete IPT print line. If a
preselection is not made, character set 3 with a character height of 3 mm is
automatically used.

If an IPT printer is connected, there is the possibility of selecting font records.

For this purpose, the relevant character set size (from CDF) is prefixed to the
text memory numbers.
The preset record size applies to the relevant line and may change with the
next control character (No. 96, 97, 98 and 99 from CDF).

Each entry made in the parameter field requires a coordinate to be specified on

This does not apply to control characters and font sizes.

In label printing operations, the ‘dir’ byte of the bar code is not evaluated. The
system uses the ‘dir’ byte of the coordinate field instead.
The coordinates of the CDF numbers 96, 97, 98, 99, 120 to 125 are not
evaluated. These need not be entered.

14.2. Bar code parameterizing

The bar code to be printed out is to be preset here, such as the

• Bar code type
• Bar code height in mm
• Bar code with/without plain text line (OCR line)
• Print direction horizontal (standard setting) or vertical
• Module width (bar code width of thin code bar)
• Start positions and selection/deselection of data fields in the bar code
printout

Three different bar code types may be set on the ST via the following
memories:
− bar code No. 1
− bar code No. 2
− bar code No. 3
Memory calls and thus calls for definition functions of the bar code to be
printed are made via STU STU
, STU STU
and
STU STU STU VWX

(see CDF) and the user password.

The input procedure is as described in the following.

14.2.1. Bar code definitions

To describe a bar code, various data must be preset.
Three different data groups from the CDF may be preselected along with the
position and length.

Total Code length Total code length

* CDF = Central Data Field

The total code length ‘Code length’ must not be less than
NumOfDecades1 + NumOfDecades2 + NumOfDecades3, otherwise an error
message will be output.

• When setting the decade length to 99 (only possible for NumOfDecades1), the
weight value will appear without comma and the data value will be padded with
leading zeros if the weighing range is not fully utilized by the data.
Data 2 and data 3 fields are not available in this case.
The code length corresponds to the number of range digits of the scale (= L
NumOfDecades1).
• For ticket printouts, the coordinates are not effective.
• The ‘dir’ bit is only taken into account in ticket printing.
• As regards the ticket printout, the ‘dir’ bit from the coordinate line becomes
effective (see also section 14.1., coordinate input for the print output via IPT).

-112- 6.457.98.6.01.01

The bar codes are selected in the parameter field by means of the CDF
numbers 110, 111 and 112.

- Number of digits displayed = number of digits of the weighing range

e.g. 150.00 kg weighing range Þ load 24.35 kg

Printout if: 99 = NumOfDecades1: 02435

98 = NumOfDecades1: 024.35

Code 2/5 interleaved and 2/5 interleaved, doubled

An odd number of digits of the weighing range is automatically complemented
to an even number:
Example:
a weighing range of 150.00 kg corresponds to 5 digits, load 24.35 kg:
printout if 99 = NumOfDecades1: 002435

− Only applicable to Alpha 39, code 128 or EAN 128 code:

a decade length of 98 (only possible in conjunction with NumOfDecades1)
causes only the weight value with the comma to be indicated via the memory
NumOfDecades1 (number from CDF).
Data 2 and data 3 fields are not available in this case.
The code length corresponds to the number of range digits of the scale (= L
NumOfDecades1). As long as these settings are selected, all numeric codes
will be rejected (an attempt made to print any other code will cause the error
message 20654 to be output).

(TD 20 printer) of a scale having a weighing range of 15 kg.

For the following print examples, only the memory for bar code No. 1 was used.
The memories for code No. 2 and No. 3 may, however, also be activated.

Memory bar code No. 1 (110 M0D), here ‘2/5 interleaved’(CODE 100):

* Although the memory 'Code length' is set to a total number of 10 digits, the
code is printed out with 12 digits.
Reason: an odd number of digits in the code 2/5 interleaved is
complemented to an even number.

** Since set to 0, the number of decades3 is not printed out, i. e. it has been
deselected.

The example (15 kg scale) is based on the following values:

Gross weight = 10.060 kg, DATA1=CDF No. 53
number of decades1 = 5 decades
Net weight = 05.060 kg, DATA2=CDF No. 51
number of decades2 = 5 decades
