With the ever increasing interest in MAPs throughout the world there is corresponding growth
in their trade. Development of newer areas such as food supplements, nutraceuticals,
cosmaceuticals and search for newer lead molecules for medicine and meat substitutes from
vegetable sources is putting these sources to stress. In world trade of MAPs, India and China are
two MAPs producing and exporting countries.
Indian herbal trade involves 8600 odd domestic herbal industrial units, thousands of
practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine and other related activities. There is a demand of
nearly 5 lakh MT/annuum of the herbal drug raw material. The structure of this trade is very
complex. This trade involves thousands of collectors, traders and commission agents, primary
cultivators of MAPs and end users. The report on demand and supply of MAPs (2015) enlists 1622
botanicals corresponding to 1178 species in commercial trade with a total trade volume of
512000 MT for the year 2014-15. The trade is still secretive and complete chain of custody
(cultivators, collectors, traders and consumers) at many places is not transparent. Under such
conditions it is not easy to estimate the trade data which is crucial to the fair trade and
conservation of MAPs threatened as a result of increase in demand. The present survey is the one
of step in this direction. The availability of this type of data will be central to future planning about
herbals.
In order to obtain a reliable data on trade of MAPs, the chain of custody of MAPs, is very important,
because the data and dynamics of trade will be generated from these stakeholders only. There is
thus a need of a directory of trader, exporters and extractors who form the back bone of this
activity. This work is being carried out at the different levels but no concerted effort was made
previously, hence this project.
Many of the MAPs are collected from the wild and forest. Earlier the data about collection from
the forest was maintained by the forest department. But due to change in policy this work was
allotted to the Panchayats. Unfortunately, no Panchayat took the effort to maintain this data and
