Elastomer Materials for Components

in Motor Vehicles

Foreword
This Daimler-Benz Supply Specification contains general requirements for components in passenger cars
and commercial vehicles for elastomeric materials which are not already covered by existing component
DBLs, e.g. for the engine, transmission and major assembly area etc. DBL 5587 is the result of the
consolidation of the individual DBLs 5561, 5563, 5565, 5567, 5568 and DBL 5569 which no longer apply
to new design.

DBL 5587 shall therefore be regarded as a supplement. In particular, in the case of static and dynamic
gaskets and elastomer hoses, for example, special requirements are described in the appropriate
individual DBLs.

*) The cold reference value is a pure material characteristic. The temperatures indicated above as cold
reference value characterize the temperature at which the elastomer stiffens (by approximately 2.5
times in comparison with the standard atmosphere room temperature of 23 °C) and becomes hard.

This value does not necessarily mean that the function of a component no longer exists at temperatures
lower than the cold reference value. This depends on the mechanical stress. The cold reference value
therefore is not an application temperature of a component limited towards low temperatures.

The indication of the cold reference value is intended to show the differences between the elastomers of
the different product versions in the low-temperature range.

6 Technical data of polymers

General instructions
 The target values listed in the following tables refer to tests performed on sheet material.
 Test values determined on components may deviate from test values determined on sheet material.

6.1 Permanent set tests

For applications where the component is permanently subject to static or dynamic stress, long-term
deformation tests (compression or tension set) shall be carried out for the award of material approval after
42 days in hot air or the relevant service product/substance (also refer to Technical Data in Annexes).

Where the component geometry allows test pieces to be produced for compression set or tension set, tests
shall be performed on both the component and on sheet material. The relevant test values shall be
submitted by the supplier no later than 10 weeks before the time of initial sampling .

6.2 Technical data of polymers in as-supplied condition

Refer to Tables 3 and 4 in Annexes A.1 and A.2

6.3 Resistance properties of polymers

See Tables 5 to 9 in Annexes B and C

The resistance tests listed in Annex B with regard to resistance to heat aging and ozone (Tables 5 and 6)
are standard tests which are always required for approval according to a product version.

The resistance tests listed in Annex C with regard to resistance to service products and fuel (Tables 7 to 9)
shall only be performed partially in cases where the component can come into contact with a specific
service product (e.g. engine oil enriched with fuel, transmission oil, lubricating grease or similar) or with fuel.
The test conditions and the target values shall be agreed in each individual case with the Mercedes-Benz
development department responsible and/or PWT. In general, testing is performed for 42 days at maximum
continuous temperature.
