DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT – 1
SUBJECT - POWER SYSTEM OPERATION AND CONTROL (REL6C001)
6th Semester Electrical Engineering Section - B
LAST DATE OF SUBMISSION 12/04/2024
1. Draw the schematic diagram to show power system structure.
2. Draw the power triangle for parallel combination of RL and RC load.
3. What do you mean by single/one line diagram of a power system? How can you develop
the impedance and reactance diagram from the one line diagram?
4. What are the advantages of per – unit system?
5. Show that the per-unit impedance of transformer referred to primary and referred to
secondary side are equal.
6. What is the necessity of load flow study?
7. Bus admittance matrix is a sparse matrix. Give reason.
8. What are the advantages of NR method over GS method?
9. What are different types of bus in a power system? Write the quantity specified and
unknown for each type.
10. For a 15 bus power system with 3 generator buses, the size of Jacobian matrix is________
11. Solve Exp 9.2 &9.3(combined as one question) of text book 1(Power System Analysis by
Grainger & Stevenson), Page 337.
12. The parameters of a 4 – bus system are as under
Element No. From Bus No. To Bus No. Line Half Charging
Impedance(pu) Admittance(pu)
1 1 2 0.2+j*0.8 j*0.02

2 2 3 0.3+j*0.9 j*0.03

3 2 4 0.25+j*1 j*0.04

4 3 4 0.2+j0.8 j*0.02

5 1 3 0.1+j*0.4 j*0.01

Draw the network and find the bus admittance matrix.

13. The bus admittance matrix of a 100 bus interconnected system is 90% sparse. Find the
number of transmission lines in the system.
14. What is a regulating transformer? How the bus admittance matrix is modified if a
regulating transformer is present in the line?
15. Explain the assumptions made in Decoupled Load Flow method and derive the final
expression of Load Flow Equation.
16. In the two bus system shown in fig. bus 1 is a slack bus and bus 2 is a load bus. The line
impedance z12 is in pu on a base of 100 MVA. Formulate YBus and write the load flow
equation. With flat voltage start, obtain the voltage magnitude and phase angle of bus 2
after 1st iteration using Newton – Raphson method. With the values so obtained find the
mismatch and new Jacobian matrix.

17. What is the importance of acceleration factor in load flow study?

18. A 10 MVA, 13.8 KV, 50 Hz, 3-phase alternator having an impedance of 5.7 Ω delivers 7
MW at rated voltage and a pf of 0.8 lagging. Based on machine rating, find the pu value of
current and impedance.
19. The single line diagram with three phase power and line - line rating of a three phase power
system is shown in fig. Choose the base power as 100 MVA and 20 kV as the voltage base
of the generator G1. Draw the per – unit impedance diagram.

20. Explain Q-limit handling for PV bus in load flow study.
