VARIANCE AND STANDARD DEVIATION

Variance of a population is the mean square deviation of individual values from the population mean. It’s denoted as( ∂2 ) while the mean of the
population is denoted as ( -x)

OR.

It can also refer to the statistical measure that quantifies the spread or dispersion of asset of data points.

Variance can be of grouped data or un-grouped data;

For ungrouped data

Population Variance (∂2 ) = Ɛ(x-x) 2/n

Where:

-Ɛ represents the sum of

-x represents each individual data point

- -x represents the mean from each data point

-n represents the total number of data points

To calculate the variance you can use these steps

 Calculate the mean (average)

Ɛx/n
 Subtract the mean from each data point(x- -x)
 Square the results for each data point(x- -x)2
 Sum up all the squared differences Ɛ(x- -x) 2
 Divide the sum by the total number of data points Ɛ(x- -x) 2/n
 The result as being the variance

Examples
Find the standard deviation and variance of each set of numbers given; 12, 6, 7, 3, 15, 10, 18, and 5

Solution

X F fx x- -x (x- -x)2
3 1 3 3-9.5=-6.5 42.25
5 1 5 5-9.5=-4.5 20.25
6 1 6 6-9.5=-3.5 12.25
7 1 7 7-9.5=-2.5 6.25
10 1 10 10-9.5=0.5 0.25
12 1 12 12-9.5=2.5 6.25
15 1 15 15-9.5=5.5 30.25
18 1 18 18-9.5=8.5 72.25
Ɛ f=8 Ɛf(x)=76 Ɛ(x- -x)2=190

To get variance (∂2) = Ɛ(x- x) 2/n

=190/8

Grouped data

Population variance

∂2 = Ɛf(x- -x) 2/ Ɛf

Where,

f=frequency
-
x=midpoint of a class

Ɛf=-represents the total number of data points

STANDARD DEVIATION

Standard deviation is the measure of the amount t of variance in a set of data values.

OR

it is also a unit of measurement that shows by how much the separate score tend to differ from the mean.

The standard deviation is calculated as the Positive square root of the variance.

Standard deviation ==√variance

Example two

Given the data on daily wages of 45 workers of a factory below. Find the population variance and standard deviation?
Wages number of workers

100-200 1

120-200 2

140-200 6

160-200 20

180-200 11

200-200 3

220-200 2

Solution

Wages Number of x f(x) x- -x (x- -x)2 f(x- -x)2

workers(f)
100-200 1 150 150 -32.2222 1038.2702 1038.2702
120-200 2 60 320 -22.2222 493.8262 987.652
140-200 6 170 1020 -12.2222 149.3822 896.292
160-200 20 180 3600 -2.2222 4.9382 98.764
180-200 11 190 2090 7.7778 60.4942 665.4362
200-200 3 200 600 17.7778 316.0502 948.15
220-200 2 210 420 27.7778 771.6062 1543.212
Ɛf =45 Ɛf (x)=8200 Ɛf(x- -
x )2=6177.72
62

∂2=Ɛf(x- -x) 2/ Ɛf

=6177.7262/45

=137.228

Standard deviation=√137.2828
