INTRODUCTION
The farm activity was conducted in Mada-walabu University which is found in Bale Robe
town.Bale Robe is located 430 km south eastern o f Addis Ababa. Geographically, Bale-Robe
is located at latitude and longitude of 7°7ʹ N and 40°E. The altitude ranges from 1500 to 3200
meter above sea level. The annual mean temperature ranges from 5 0c to 23.50c and the area
receives annual rain fall greater than 1150 mm, which is bimodal(march to may and july to
October). The farming system of the area is mixed farming and 87% of total population
engaged in agriculture. Livestock population occupies a significant place in the farm
economy. The important crops that grow in the area are wheat, barley ,sorghum, pea and bea
(SWAB,2013).
The major activities which conducted in Mada-walabu University Dairy Farm was
summarized as follows;

MAJOR DAIRY FARM ACTIVITIES :-

Feeding of dairy cows

Feed type Time


Concentrate feed(mollases,grinded maize) 12am-2am and 11pm-12:30pm local time
Hay feeding 12am-1am and 7pm-9pm local time
Green feed (Alfa Alfa, elephant grass) 3am-5am local time

Watering: - On concrete trough, its clean water and is available at any time.

Heat detection; - by their behaviour e.g. mounting.

Pregnancy diagnosis; palpating through rectum by professional.

Milking: - Carried out by hand manually in the morning (2:30-3:00am) and at afternoon (10:30-
11:00am).

Before milking the udder is washed by warm water and then dried by a towel.

Feeding of dry cows and heifers; the same with lactating cows except that concentrate is not given.

Feeding calves up to one month

Colostrums feeding-from birth up to 3 days and depend entiriely on milk up to 15 days.

Calves above 15 days of age were feed on hay once a day in the morning in addition to milk.

Dairy farm health activities

Disinfection : - Iodine and alcohol

Deworming : - Albendazole, tetracloza and ivermectin.

Treatment of diseases:-Oxytetracycline and penstrip

Intra-mammary infusion

Vaccines

Anthrax Every year Sc

Bovine pasteurellosis Every 8 month Sc

Maintenance of equipment and facilities

Maintenance is carried out by the team prepared to do this in the university.

Major Poultry farm activities: -
 Feeding: mixed feeding of chickens is carried out according to their age group.
Among the feeds used:-
 pelleted maize
 seed cake
 vitamins
 limestone salts
 frushka
 Watering: - available at any time on the water rare.
 Health care activity
 Disinfectant:- hydrogen peroxide
 Vaccination: - Newcastle Hb1, Newcastle lasota, Fowl pox, Fowl thyphoid
 Drugs: - chloramphenicole,amprolium,piperazin citrate, diazinone spray, cyclospray.

Breeds: - there are three types of breeds available in the farm

 White leg horn(WLH)


 Bovan brown(BB)
 Egyptian fiyomin(EF)

Replacement of WLH and EF is from the farm it self but that of BB is from Debrezeit.
