Artist Statement
My artwork theme and concepts were a constant search for the best way to represent my theme
using different art techniques. Some of these techniques consist of a lot of ways to interpret my
art in ways I have never tried before so completing this journal also taught and made me
experience a lot of things. Each piece I created represented a part of my home and family. While
creating these pieces I realized a lot of things are different from what it seems to take for instance
the flower that I drew in the art piece” Cauldron". This flower withered after I finished my
sketch. This shows that even though the art piece captured the beauty of a lively flower, it died in
reality. I am grateful for getting the opportunity to capture its small but prominent elegance by
using the technique drawing from observation. Some of the techniques used were cross-hatching,
stippling, shading, and painting. Even though I may be satisfied with my art pieces if my work
makes anyone experience nostalgia I would be immersed with joy.
Statement of reflection

My journey of visual arts through the fifth form was exciting and educational. During this time, I
learned that drawing is the only skill you need to do art. While completing this art reflective
journal I learned that art has to do with writing and the history of art as well.
Over the years of practicing art, I have gained quite a lot of skill in coloring and shading but
even though this may be the case I suffer when it comes on to completing mixed media pieces.
Later on, I noticed that I was scared of putting different materials on my artwork and spoiling it.
The fear of adding materials got in my way because of that I had no idea how to start or end my
art pieces. Even though this may be the case, I tried to face my fears by continuing with the help
of my teacher.
During the fifth form, I also learned different art techniques such as stippling. While trying this
new skill it took a lot of patience. I also wanted to give up because the pen would sometimes dry
out or run out of ink. Even so, it was still an amazing technique to try out and I would feel great
to master it with more practice.
When I first realized I had to write another reflection I felt that it was unnecessary. The reason
I expressed this concern was that we already stated why and how we choose our theme and
expressive form. With that being the case, my obvious conclusion was that it was
self-explanatory. Even though that was being said it was before I wrote this reflection, I have
now realized I was wrong and this reflection helped me express my feelings and thoughts about
the process of writing my journal.
The reason why I selected the theme “Flowers”
The main reason for selecting the theme “flowers” was because flowers are universal symbols of
beauty. Flowers symbolize comfort, affection, and love. Just being around flowers may cause a
feeling of warmth but you don't have to be around flowers to feel warmth, just looking at a
painting or photograph can cause you to feel that same warmth and joy. The different colors used
in painting and mixed media pieces displaying flowers use different colors to emit different
emotions to people looking at them. Some people may remember childhood memories or even
different smells just by looking at an art piece showing flowers but everyone may feel a different
emotion depending on their personal experience. I want my artwork to bring joy to people
looking at them while feeling different emotions as well. The different pieces in this art journal
will also show different techniques which you can use to represent flowers.
My reason for choosing drawing and mixed-media

My reason for choosing mixed media is because mixed media gives the flexibility for the newer
materials in conjunction with older materials to be explored, and a wider range of products, arts,
and crafts can be created with. When you are painting a portrait, the colors you choose express
your feelings for that person, using mixed media can also give your drawing different textures
depending on the different media you use.

I chose drawing because it helps to express oneself uniquely. Sketching out your thoughts and
ideas, or using your imagination to create an art piece to put on paper and make you explore
yourself into a deeper trance.
Background information related to my theme and expressive form.

The very first flower ever to be represented in the arts may be the lotus flower. Ancient
Egyptians adorned amulets, ceramics, and papyrus paintings with the lotus flower, which to them
symbolized the sun, The very first flower ever to be represented in the arts may be the lotus

A mixed media painting combines different painting and drawing materials and methods, rather
than only one medium. Any materials can be used, including collage items such as pages from
magazines, newspapers, photographs, fabric. The use of mixed media began around 1912 with
the cubist collages and constructions of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and has become
widespread as artists developed increasingly open attitudes to the media of art. Essentially art
can be made of anything or any combination of things.
Drawing is a technique in which images are depicted on a surface by making lines, though
drawings can also contain tonal areas, washes, and other non-linear marks.

Piece 1:" Garden Flowers "

The title “Garden Flowers”

The materials I used in this artwork were stickers, pencil paper, sharpener shavings, acrylic paint,
markers, tissue, and pencil crayons
The first thing I did was sketch out the flower and the layout of the picture. I also drew a bucket
with a leaf sitting in it.
I then proceeded to color the flowers using the colors lime green, dark green, yellow and pink.
For the dirt I paste sharpener shavings to create a rough look and feel, then I painted it dark

green,
For the background I pasted tissue on it to give it the texture or the similar feel of a wall, after
that, I pasted the tissue. I painted it orange and used red paint to create the shadow of the plant.

I then continued to shade the bucket using a gray crayon,

Based on discussions we had in class I realized all the bright colors were consuming them and
distracting from the subject of the art piece so I changed the color of the ground and background.
The wall was changed to color peach and the shadow orange, the ground was changed to green
Changing the colors still wasn't enough so I used hot pink-, green- and yellow-colored markers
and white highlights to give the plant more life, For the bucket, I used a 4b pencil to give it more
depth and to make it have for life I also did that for the leaf inside

The backsides were looking empty so I added leaf stickers, I also added a gravel sticker on the
ground.
I hope that anyone looking at my artwork feels a sense of warmth like they feel when they're in
nature.
I changed the wall color to peach and orange because. With its origin in nature, the color peach is
something of comfort. It also gives a feeling of joy; Orange is a combination of yellow and red
and is considered an energetic color. Orange calls to mind feelings of excitement, enthusiasm,
and warmth.
I want the combination of the colors green, peach, and orange to bring peace and tranquility to
anyone looking at the artwork and I hope anyone looking at it feels that joy.

With further inspection, I decided to use the marble technique. I got this idea from my artist
Gonnella Naydene. The first thing I did was to drip paint onto paper so that the colors could run
into each other to provide the marble effect. I then tore the papers into several pieces to paste
them in the background just so I could use the collaging techniques. I hope that anyone looking
at my artwork feels a sense of warmth like they feel when they're in nature. I hope that anyone

Piece 2:" Bear on Roses"

Title: “Bear on Roses”

Medium: Paint, Thread, paper, card board, crayons and markers
Year: 2022
I created this artwork using thread, paper, sugar board, crayons, pencil, markers, eye shadow,
diamonds, and paint. First, I sketch out the bear and how I want the layout to be, then I use red
thread to sew the outer line of the bear to give it a more dignified look and to give it more
texture.
I proceed to color the bear with red, pink crayons, and pink markers to give the bear a less plain
look and to create a softer presence. For the surface area that the bear is sitting on I glued paper
to give it more texture than I painted it a mixture of orange and white to give it the color peach, I
also glued three of the diamonds to the bear's ear.

The color peach has the origin of nature, the color peach is to bring comfort. It also gives a
feeling of joy to anyone looking at the artwork. In the background I used red paint to create the
curtain, I used red because it makes you feel passionate and energized. Red also brings a feeling
of warmth and also triggers other emotions, the color red is also associated with passion and
love. I also drew and colored roses on paper and cut it out so that they could be pasted on the
curtain. Roses symbolize love and beauty during the process of pasting the roses on the curtain
and I also decided to paste on diamonds so the curtain wouldn’t only be composed of the roses. I
also decided to rub glitter-filled eyeshadow on the curtain to give it a shiny look.

During the creation of this artwork, I learned how to paint a curtain and I also learned how
different colors create a different impact on your emotions. My favorite part of the artwork is the
beautiful red roses. I like it because it gives the piece an elegant look.

If I could change one thing, I would make the lining up of the thread more visible to make it
obvious that threading was in the artwork. I chose to do this for my artwork because I wanted
anyone seeing the piece to feel warmth and joy, I was also hoping the teddy bear could bring
back peaceful memories from your childhood.
Piece 3; "Flower stem"

I started this artwork by sketching out the stem of the flowers. After three hours part of the
flower stem was colored using crayons, markers, and pencils. I then used gold paint to help
enhance the plant but all and all it was still dull. Sticking with the idea of nature I decided to
paste newspapers on the background to give the piece more and used a brown or matted color to
paint the newspaper pieces to cause a block effect. Even though this idea was very beautiful the
background over crowded the subject of my piece and cause the art work to seem loud.
With that being the case, I painted over the background again using light brown with some
yellow to give a tan look. I chose to make the background tan because tan is a generally warm
color and I wanted my art piece to make people feel the warmth and be reminded of a garden.
The idea of using different color boxes came to me during math class. I thought this would give
my piece a unique look, for some of the boxes I even added thread to give it more texture and to
only make it appealing to the eye but also make people wonder about the feel as well.
Even though I made a lot of mistakes during the development of this piece I hope people feel
warmth and joy while looking at it.

Piece 4: "Cauldron"

I chose this still life to draw because it was one of my mother's favorite tea sets. I used the
technique of stippling because I thought it would express the elegance and texture that these pots
had.
I started with the small pots at first and then moved up to the larger ones. I placed a small flower
in one of the small salt shakers to help involve my theme "flowers" in this piece. For stippling
the salt shaker, I had to space out the dots more to prevent it from being too light.

After that, I moved on to the larger pots which took a lot of time. I messed up the proportions for
some of the pots but to make up for it I tried my best to add more detail to capture the elegance
of the posts and the contrast between the flowers. I hope that anyone looking at this piece would
be reminded of the small objects that were In their homes but they didn't take notice. I made this
piece with the intention of making people notice or remember the small things that they didn't
find important that helped to carve out their childhood and maybe seeing this even helped unlock
a forgotten memory.

“Cauldron”
Materials: paper, black gel ink pen

Piece 5: "My Sister"

“My Sister”
Materials: paper, pencil crayons
Year: 2022

I first decided to sketch out the line of the drawing using a light brown crayon. I then picked out
skin-based colors to help match her skin tone. I used colors such as brown, light brown, dark
brown, and pink. I also used peach and white crayons to blend the colors together. I started
around the left eye first to identify the proportions easier I then moved on to the nose area where
I left a small vertical space to leave it for highlight then I moved on to the other eye. When
coloring the eye, I had to leave space for the braid to
go there so I used a pencil to draw the braid lightly to avoid coloring the eye in the space by
mistake.
After that, I blended in the colors and then started to choose the colors that I would use for the
lips. I chose the colors pink, orange, magenta, and brown. I chose these colors because I wanted
to give her lips a natural look. With the majority of the face already finished I moved on to the
jaw and then I did the neck using the cross-hatching method to help show the textures of the
skin. With being done I moved on to the t-shirt when doing the t-shirt, I also used a
cross-hatching technique to show the different threading. For the hair, I used dark brown,
magenta, and pink for blending these colors. I chose these colors because I wanted to accurately
match the color scheme of the hair. For the flower tucked behind her ear I used pink, magenta,
and yellow only because in the picture it was very dull and I wanted to give the flower a more
vibrant look to match this piece.
After finishing this piece, I hope anyone looking at it will feel the love and effort I put into
creating it.
Piece 6: "Flower on a Stool "

“Flower on a stool”
Materials: paper, pencil
Year: 2022

The first thing I did was to lightly sketch out the outline of the potted plant. After that, I moved
on to the pot because it had the most detail in this piece. I then decided to draw from bottom to
top so I drew the bottom leaves first and shaded them using the cross-hatching technique. To
show the small details in the leaves I used a small point pencil. After finishing all the leaves, I
started to draw and shade the stool using lines to show the different wood patterns.
After finishing this piece, I hope anyone seeing this will be reminded of their mother's garden or
even their own and feel the warmth.

Title: BOB

This portrait of Bob Marley is a mixed media piece with dimensions of W 24 x H 24.
The year it was created is unknown, Gonnella Naydene Art gallery is located in Jolly Harbour
Antigua. This piece is a portrait of the Jamaican singer Bob Marley it consists of many different
colors are mostly red, yellow, and green and some color in his hair but mainly dark brown and
aqua green, and the background is also aqua green.
The different colors used in this portrait highlight the features of the subject and causes the
painting to look more radiant. The aqua green in the painting brings off a sense of confidence
and royalty. The green on the right and side of the painting seems like light reflecting on the
subject’s face which gives off a calming and cooling effect.
There are patches of red and aqua blue in the subject’s hair which gives off the feeling the artist
wanted to capture him in colorful light.
In this piece, it seems the artist wanted to go for a colorful and eye-catching approach and give a
calming feeling while looking at the painting at the same time.
This artwork is also similar to her other artworks in terms of color and painting style.
When looking at the portrait the colors give me a calming feeling which makes me gravitate
more and more to the painting it captures the subject (Bob Marley)
Well, this makes me feel more respect for the artist and the subject of the portrait. The portrait
looks very well done even though the patching of red in the background invading the aqua blue
didn’t seem necessary compared to the different colors that are used to develop the features of
his face. This painting is well respected in society because it's a portrait of a legend and the
colors used gives a sense of royalty and respect towards Bob Marley in conclusion this was a
well-thought-out and lovely piece.

though this painting is beautiful the use of aqua green is slightly overbearing. So much so that
