Single Correct Answer Type

1. If three of the six vertices of a regular hexagon are chosen at random, then the probability
that the triangle formed with these chosen vertices is equilateral is:

a. 1/10 b. 1/5 c. 3/10 d. 3/20

Solution:

2. Fifteen coupons are numbered 1, 2, 3, . . . ,15. Seven coupons are selected at random one at a
time with replacement. The probability that the largest number appearing on selected
coupon is 9 is.

a. (9/16)6 b. (8/15)7
97 −87
c. (3/5)7 d. 157
.

Solution:

Since there are 15 possible cases for selecting a coupon and seven coupons are selected,

The total number of cases of selecting seven coupons is 157 .

It is given that the largest number on the selected coupon is 9.

Therefore, the selection is to be made from the coupons numbered 1 to 9.

This can be made in 97 ways. Out of these 97 cases, 87 cases do not contain the number 9.

Thus, the favorable number of cases is 97 − 87 .

97 −87
Hence, the required probability is 157
.

4. A number is chosen at random from the set {1, 2, 3, 4, ...... n}. 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝐸1 be the event that the
numer drawn is divisible by 2 and 𝐸2 be the 3 event that the number drawn is divisible by 3,
then
a. 𝐸1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐸2 are always independent
b. 𝐸1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐸2 are independent if 𝑛 = 6𝑘(𝑘 ∈ 𝑁)
c. 𝐸1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐸2 are independent if 𝑛 = 6𝑘 + 2(𝑘 ∈ 𝑁)
d. 𝐸1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐸2 are dependent if n=10

5. The probabilities that a student passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are 𝑚, 𝑝and 𝑐
respectively. Of these subjects the students have a 75% chance of passing in at least one, a
50% chance of passing in at least two and a 40% chance a passing in exactly two, which of
the following relations are true?

a. 𝑝 + 𝑚 + 𝑐 = 20 b. 𝑝 + 𝑚 + 𝑐 = 20

1 1
c. 𝑝𝑚𝑐 = d. 𝑝𝑚𝑐 =
10 4

Solution:

According to the problem,

3
𝑚 + 𝑝 + 𝑐 − 𝑚𝑝 − 𝑚𝑐 − 𝑝𝑐 + 𝑚𝑝𝑐 = (1)
4

2
𝑚𝑝(1 − 𝑐) + 𝑚𝑐(1 − 𝑝) + 𝑝𝑐(1 − 𝑚) = (2)
5

Also,
1
𝑚𝑝 + 𝑝𝑐 + 𝑚𝑐 − 2𝑚𝑝𝑐 = (3)
2

From equations (2) and (3).

1 2 1
𝑚𝑝𝑐 = 2 − 5 = 10
2 3 7
∴ 𝑚𝑝 + 𝑚𝑐 + 𝑝𝑐 = 5 + 10 = 10
3 7 1 15+14−2 27
∴𝑚+𝑝+𝑐 = + − = =

6. A covered basket of flowers has some lilies and roses. In search of rose, Sweety and Shweta
alternately pick up a flower from a basket but puts it back if it is not a rose. Sweety is 3
times more likely to be the first one to pick a rose. If sweety begin this ‘rose hunt’ and if
there are 60 lilies in the basket and ‘n’ be the number of roses in the basket, then ‘n’ is
divisible by
a. 5 b. 7 c. 8 d. 24
Solution:
JEE AGNI ADVANCED: Probability DPP

Hence, then ‘n’ is divisible by 5, 8 and 24.

7. In a binomial distribution 𝐵(𝑛, 𝑝), the sum and product of the mean & variance are 5 and 6
respectively, then find 6(𝑛 + 𝑝 − 𝑞) is equal to__________.

8. There are two red, two blue, two white and certain number (greater than 0) of green socks
in a drawer. If two socks are taken at random from the drawer without replacement, the
probability that they are of the same colour is 1/5, then the number of green socks is________.

Solution:

Leta the number of green socks be 𝑥 > 0

E: two socks drawn are of the same color

Solution:

A. When no box remains empty, then

𝑛(𝑠) = 36_3 𝐶1 26 + 3𝐶2 = 3(243 − 64 + 1) = 540

JEE AGNI ADVANCED: Probability DPP

When each box contains equal number of balls, then

6!
𝑛(𝐸) = 2!3 3! 3! = 90

Therefore, the required probability is 90/540 = 1/6.

B. The required probability is

C. Let A be the event that A is throwing sum of 9 and B be the event that B throws a number
greater than that thrown by A. We must find 𝑃(𝐵/𝐴) = 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵)/𝑃(𝐴) = 𝑃(𝐵) (as A and B
are independent). The probability that is throwing dice so that sum is higher than 9 is.
