Constantine

Constantine the Great lived between

272 AD and 337 AD. He came to be
Emperor after his father’s death in 306
AD and remained in power until his
death in 337 AD. After becoming
Emperor he had to fight and win several
civil wars to become the sole ruler.

Constantine was a really important

Emperor in the history of the Roman
Empire. He introduced a new gold coin called the solidus
which lasted for more than a thousand years. He was also
the first Roman emperor to be a Christian as he joined the
Christian faith just before dying. He has since been
referred to as the 'First Christian Emperor’.

Constantine went on to build a new

imperial home in modern day Istanbul
which he named Constantinople. It
became the capital of the Empire for
more than a thousand years. After his
death he left the empire to his sons. For
that reason his reputation flourished for
centuries after his reign.
