Title: Rates Of Reaction
Aim: To determine the effect of concentration in rate of reaction using color change
Materials and Apparatus:
1. 0.1 mol/dm-3 sodium thiosulphate solution
2. 1.0M dilute hydrochloric acid
3. 10cm3 measuring cylinder
4. 100cm3 measuring cylinder
5. 250 cm3 conical flask
6. Printed black paper cross
7. Stop watch
Method:
1. 25cm3 of sodium thiosulphate solution was measured and put into the conical flask.
2. 5cm3 of water was measured and added to the conical flask.
3. The conical flask was put on the black cross.
4. 20cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid was measured.
5. The acid was put into the flask. At the same time it was swirled gently and a stop
watch was started.
6. The cross was observed through the top of the flask. The stopwatch was stopped when
the cross was no longer visible.
7. The time taken for the cross to disappear was recorded in a table. The time was
recorded in seconds.
8. This was repeated for experiments 2-5.

Discussion:
Rate of reaction is the speed at the which a reaction occurs. The solution turns cloudy because
the formed from the reaction is soluble, so it is left suspended in the solution therefore
making it cloudy.
Na2S2O3(aq) + 2HCl(aq) → 2NaCl(aq) + SO2(g) + S(s) +H2O(l)
The concentration of the Na2S2O3 affects the rate of reaction because the higher the
concentration, the faster the reaction will occur and the lower the concentration, the slower
the reaction will occur. The independent variable in this experiment is the volume of acid, the
dependent variables in this experiment is the rate, the time, the concentration and the
controlled variables are the volume of acid, water and sodium thiosulphate. The concentration
is dependent on the volume of the water and the sodium thiosulphate, the time is dependent
on the different concentration of the sodium thiosulphate reacting with the acid and the rate is
dependent on the time. The graph shows the rate gradually increasing as the concentration
increases. The rate increases because the concentration is greater towards the end of the
graph.
Sources Of Error:
1. Inaccurate timings
Precaution:
1. It was ensured that the flask was swirled gently
Conclusion:
It can be concluded that as the concentration of sodium thiosulphate increases the rate of
reaction increases.
