CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
1
Introduction
Aviation in India can be broadly divided into military and civil aviation. India has an
extensive civilian air transportation network and is amongst the fastest-growing
aviation markets in the world according to the international air transportation
association (IATA).
The history of aviation dates to the 5th century with the invention of kites in China. The
famous artist Leonardo da Vinci created the first drafts for a rational aircraft in his
paintings in the 15th century.
In the late 18th century the Montgolfier brothers invented the hot-air balloon and began
manned flights. At almost the same time, the discovery of hydrogen gas led to the
invention of the hydrogen balloon.[1] Various theories in mechanics by physicists
during the same period of time, notably fluid dynamics and Newton's laws of motion,
led to the foundation of modern aerodynamics, most notably by Sir George Cayley.
Balloons, both free-flying and tethered, began to be used for military purposes from the
end of the 18th century, with the French government establishing Balloon Companies
during the French Revolution.
Experiments with gliders provided the groundwork for learning the dynamics of
heavier-than-air craft, most notably by Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, and Octave Chanute.
By the early 20th century, advances in engine technology and aerodynamics made
controlled, powered flight possible for the first time. In 1903, following their pioneering
research and experiments with wing design and aircraft control, the Wright
brothers successfully incorporated all of the required elements to create and fly the first
airplane. The basic configuration with its characteristic tail was established by 1909,
followed by rapid design and performance improvements aided by the development of
more powerful engines.
The first great ships of the air were the rigid dirigible balloons pioneered by Ferdinand
von Zeppelin, which soon became synonymous with airships and dominated long-
distance flight until the 1930s, when large flying boats became popular. After World
War II, the flying boats were in their turn replaced by land planes, and the new and
immensely powerful jet engine revolutionised both air travel and military aviation.
2
In 1647, Tito Livio Burattini developed a model aircraft featuring four pairs of glider
wings. But it never supported the weight of a person. Later, in 1970, Francesco
Terzi, the Father of Aeronautics, published a theory that showed the possibility of
lighter-than-air aircraft made of copper foil cylinders.
The Discovery of hydrogen in the 17th century led to the development of the first
hydrogen balloon. In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers, including Jacques-Étienne and
Joseph-Michel, flew the first unmanned hot air balloon over Annonay, France. The
same year, they flew a piloted, tethered hot air balloon with Giroud de Villette, Jean-
Francois pilatre de Rozier, and Jean-Baptiste Réveillon onboard. Later, they launched
their first untethered hot air balloon flight, which flew nine kilometers in about 25
minutes. The hot air balloon became exceptionally popular during the late 18th century,
which led to the discovery of the relationship between altitude and atmosphere.
However, the main downside of hot air balloons was a lack of man euverability.
Between 1900 and 1902, the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright from Dayton,
Ohio, designed and tested numerous glider and kite models. They built a wind tunnel
and then created various devices to measure the drag and lift on more than two hundred
wing designs. Finally, their third glider was a success as it outdid its predecessors,
which heavily contributed to the aeronautical engineering field.
3
The Wright brothers also worked together to solve the current issue of controlled,
powered flight. They solved the control problem by creating wing warping for yaw
control, roll control, and a steerable rudder. On December 17th, 1903, the two brothers
successfully built and launched the first crewed heavier-than-air flight. This is also the
universally recognized date that launched modern aviation. On that day, they made a
total of four flights in their simple aircraft, with the longest one piloted by Wilbur,
covering 852 feet in 49 seconds.

another layer of challenge. The airline industry is highly susceptible to external
shocks, impacting Air India Express's operational costs and financial stability.
Adapting to these external factors while maintaining cost-effectiveness becomes
imperative for sustained success.Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has
dramatically altered the aviation landscape. The recovery process requires strategic
planning and resilience, as airlines around the world face unprecedented challenges.
Air India Express must navigate through the uncertainties of changing travel patterns,
health regulations, and economic constraints to stay resilient in this unpredictable
environment. To counter these threats, Air India Express needs a comprehensive
strategy that includes route optimization, cost-cutting measures, and investments in
modern technology. Building strong partnerships with other airlines and improving
customer loyalty programs can also contribute to its competitive edge.In conclusion,
Air India Express operates in a fiercely competitive environment, facing challenges
from both traditional and low-cost carriers. Navigating through these threats requires
a strategic and adaptive approach to ensure long-term sustainability and success in
the aviation industry.
Fuel Price Volatility: Given the airline industry's sensitivity to fuel prices, any
significant fluctuations can impact operating costs substantially. Unpredictable fuel
costs remain a perennial threat to the financial health of airlines, including Air India
Express. Air India Express, like many other airlines, faces the challenge of fuel price
volatility, which significantly impacts its operational costs. The airline industry is
highly sensitive to fluctuations in fuel prices as fuel constitutes a substantial portion
of operating expenses. The unpredictable nature of global oil markets can lead to
sudden and substantial changes in fuel costs for airlines.Fuel price volatility affects
51
Air India Express in several ways. Firstly, it directly influences the airline's operating
expenses, leading to increased costs during periods of rising fuel prices. This can
strain the company's financial health, especially if fuel costs spike unexpectedly. To
mitigate this risk, airlines often engage in hedging strategies to stabilize fuel costs,
but these strategies come with their own set of complexities and
uncertainties.Secondly, fuel price fluctuations impact ticket prices. When fuel prices
rise, airlines may need to adjust ticket prices to offset the increased operational costs.
This, in turn, can affect passenger demand and overall revenue. Striking a balance
between competitive pricing and covering expenses becomes crucial for Air India
Express in such scenarios. Moreover, the airline's financial planning and budgeting
processes must be agile enough to adapt to changing fuel price dynamics. This
requires a proactive approach in monitoring global oil markets, geopolitical events,
and other factors influencing fuel prices. Strategic decision-making becomes
paramount to navigate these challenges successfully. In conclusion, fuel price
volatility poses a significant threat to Air India Express's financial stability and
operational efficiency. The airline must employ effective risk management strategies,
closely monitor market trends, and adapt its business plans to navigate the
unpredictable nature of fuel costs in the aviation industry.
Geopolitical Instability: Political tensions or instability in regions served by the
airline can disrupt routes and impact operations. Geopolitical factors, such as
diplomatic issues or security concerns, pose unpredictable challenges. Air India
Express, like any other airline, is susceptible to geopolitical instability that can pose
threats to its operations. One significant thread is the political climate in the regions
it operates. Political tensions, conflicts, or sudden policy changes can impact routes,
airport access, and overall business operations. For instance, if Air India Express
operates in areas with geopolitical tensions, there's a risk of route closures, airspace
restrictions, or heightened security concerns. This can disrupt schedules, increase
operational costs, and affect the safety and security of passengers and crew.Another
thread is the economic stability of the countries where the airline operates. Economic
downturns or currency fluctuations can impact travel demand and affect the financial
health of the airline. This is particularly relevant for Air India Express, as economic
challenges in key markets can lead to decreased passenger numbers and
revenue.Additionally, regulatory changes influenced by geopolitical factors can
impact the airline industry. Changes in visa policies, security regulations, or trade
52
agreements can directly affect the movement of passengers and goods, thereby
influencing the airline's operations and profitability.Furthermore, diplomatic
relations between countries can play a crucial role. Sudden diplomatic tensions can
result in restrictions or bans on flights, affecting the airline's ability to operate in
certain regions. To mitigate these threads, Air India Express would need a robust risk
management strategy, including scenario planning, diversification of routes, and
close monitoring of geopolitical developments. Adaptable business strategies and
diplomatic engagement can help the airline navigate through geopolitical
uncertainties and ensure its resilience in the face of potential challenges.
Global Economic Factors: Economic downturns or global crises, as witnessed
during events like pandemics, can significantly reduce travel demand. Air India
Express, like other airlines, is vulnerable to external economic factors beyond its
control. Air India Express, like many airlines, is influenced by various global
economic factors that shape its operations and performance. Economic threads
intertwine with the airline industry, impacting Air India Express in multiple ways.
Firstly, fuel prices play a pivotal role. Fluctuations in global oil prices directly affect
operational costs for airlines. Sudden spikes can significantly increase expenses,
impacting Air India Express's profitability. Economic stability or instability in oil-
producing regions can exacerbate these fluctuations.Currency exchange rates are
another critical factor. As Air India Express operates internationally, exchange rate
variations affect its revenue and expenses in different currencies. This can pose
challenges in terms of budgeting and financial planning, especially when dealing with
long-term contracts and obligations.Global economic growth and recessions also
impact the demand for air travel. During economic downturns, businesses and
individuals may cut back on travel expenses, affecting the airline industry's overall
performance. Conversely, economic expansions can boost travel demand, positively
influencing Air India Express's passenger numbers and revenue.Trade tensions and
geopolitical events can disrupt international travel patterns. Tariffs, trade restrictions,
or diplomatic tensions can alter the airline's route planning and impact passenger
demand on specific routes. In recent times, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored
the vulnerability of the aviation industry to global health crises. Travel restrictions,
lockdowns, and health concerns have led to a sharp decline in air travel, posing
significant challenges for Air India Express and the industry at large. In conclusion,
the global economic landscape weaves a complex tapestry that influences Air India
53
Express's fortunes. From fuel prices and currency exchange rates to broader
economic trends and geopolitical events, the airline must navigate these threads with
agility and strategic planning to ensure resilience and sustainable operations in an
ever-changing global environment

friendly aviation market. A new rebranded website also went live with new branding.
The Air India Express logo seems to implement the “low-cost” concept in an elegant
way.
The Air India Express logo is composed of two lettering parts, executed in two
different fonts. Thus, the top “Air India” uses an extra-bold italicized sans-serif font,
which is a bit close to 8th Avenue Ultra Italic, but with the contours modernized. As
for the enlarged “Express” wordmark, set in the lowercase under the “Air India” line,
it uses a more elegant and traditional typeface, which is pretty similar to such fonts as
Arial Pro Regular and M Hei PRC Medium. The elegance of the second line is
enhanced by the smooth stroke, underlining the first part of the wordmark, and
crossing the last two “S” s.
As for the color palette of the Air India Express logo, it is based on a smooth yet deep
shade of pink, which is most often combined with white. This mix of shades makes the
simple composition of the logo look more professional and memorable. The pink hue
