Tutorial and Assignment#4
Tutorial:
Q1. A typical solid two-ways spanning concrete floor slab is supported on beams in two orthogonal
directions as shown in Figure Q1. The supporting beams are in turn supported on columns as shown.
The floor supports a superimposed live load of 4.0 kN/m2 and finishes, ceiling, partitions etc. (excluding
self-weight) of 2.0 kN/m2.
Design data:
Characteristic strength of concrete 40 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of reinforcement for tension and compression 250 N/mm2
Density of reinforced concrete 24 kN/m3
The structure is to be designed for mild exposure and 2 hours fire resistance.

Assignment:
Q2: The typical floor plan of a beam and slab floor system is shown in Figure Q2. The whole floor consists
of six panels of two-ways supporting slab and one cantilever slab, and the beams are in turn supported by
columns at the boundary of the building. Students are required to
(a) Estimate a suitable thickness of the floor slab, including the cantilever slab, assuming a uniform
thickness is adopted for the whole floor system.
(b) Design the flexural reinforcement of the two-ways slab panels along the short span.
(c) Check the deflection of the floor slab provided
(d) Check that the shear resistance of the floor slab provide is satisfactory without shear steel.
(e) Find the design loading acting on the simply supported beam between B and D.
Design data:
Characteristic live load on the floor 2.5 kN/m2
Characteristic dead load from finishes and ancillary facilities 1.5 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete 40 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of reinforcement 250 N/mm2
Density of reinforced concrete 24 kN/m3
The structure is subject to moderate exposure conditions and two hours fire resistance.
