Class 6 Science Chapter Air Around Us

This document provides information about the composition of air and various experiments that can be done to demonstrate the presence of air and how it supports burning and is dissolved in water. It also answers questions about the layers of air around Earth, gases important for photosynthesis and respiration, activities enabled by air, and how plants and animals help each other through gas exchange.

NCERT Notes for Class 6 Science

Class 6 Science – Air Around Us

1. What is the Composition of Air?

Ans:
 Air is surrounded everywhere which is a mixture of different gases
and dust particles.

 The composition of different gases present in the air is nitrogen

(78%), oxygen (21%), and other gases along with dust particles (1%).

2. Which Gas in the Atmosphere is Essential for Respiration?

Ans: For respiration, oxygen gas present in the atmosphere is essential.
3. How Will You Prove that Air Supports Burning?
Ans:
 Air support burning can be proved by an experiment.

 In this experiment, a burning candle is placed in the utensil filled

with water and the neck of the candle is not submerged in the
water.

 After that, keep an inverted glass over the candle.

 As a result, the candle is extinguished and the water level is raised

due to oxygen consumed by the burning candle.

 This proves that air supports combustion.

4. How Will You Show that Air is Dissolved in Water?

Ans:
 Air dissolved in water can be shown by an experiment.

 Take a glass filled with water.

 Heat the water present in the glass.

 You can see the bubbles coming out.

 The bubbles are formed before the water reaches its boiling point.

 This indicates air is dissolved in water.

5. Why Does a Lump of Cotton Wool Shrink in Water?

Ans:
 The lump of the cotton wool shrinks in water because the water
occupies the air present in the cotton.

 As a result, the volume of the cotton and cotton shrink.

6. The Layer of Air Around the Earth is Known as_____.

Ans: atmosphere
7. The Component of Air Used by Green Plants to Make Their Food is
______.
Ans: carbon dioxide
8. List Five Activities that are Possible Due to the Presence of Air.
Ans: The five activities that are possible due to the presence of air are:
i. Photosynthesis
ii. Transpiration
iii. Respiration
iv. Winnowing
vi. Cloud formation
9. How Do Plants and Animals Help Each Other in Exchange of Gases
in the Atmosphere?
Ans:
 Animals inhale oxygen and release carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere.

 The carbon dioxide is taken by the plants to prepare their food by

the process of photosynthesis and releases oxygen.
 The oxygen is then again taken by the animals to breathe.

 In this way, plants and animals help each other in exchange of

gases.
