Purpose of a Resume
*The goal of a resume is not to get a job… it is to get an interview. All content should be focused on that goal*
• The resume is your first impression to a prospective employer. Therefore, it needs to be well-written,
factual, and relevant to the position.
• A resume is a marketing tool, designed to sell you to a prospective employer. A resume is designed to
market you for the next job you want, not the last one you had. An employer will only scan your resume for
30-45 seconds – that’s it!

Four points to consider when creating your resume:

1. Character - Who are you? What makes you unique?
2. Purpose - What do you want? Why are you applying for this job?
3. Experience - What have you done? How are you qualified for this position?
4. Potential - What skills do you possess? Can you apply them to the position? Focus on important competencies
such as leadership, communication, resilience, global & cultural awareness, teamwork and critical thinking.

Formatting a Resume
Create a well-organized resume by using bullet points to list information. Use bold
words to emphasize important information and be consistent in placement of the
Organization
information. Be sure that all content is in reverse-chronological order (most recent
position first).
Less is best, so try to keep it to one (1) page, single spaced. If you need more room to
Page Length
showcase your qualifications, then you can have additional pages (no more than 2).
Font Size 10-11 point
Use a professional font such as Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Georgia, Cambria, etc. Avoid
Font Style using different colors – black text only. Stay away from Times New Roman as it is
considered outdated.
Margins A minimum .5” border all around

Graphics Only use graphics (pictures, designs, etc.) if you are in the graphics industry
Resume Avoid using pre-formatted resume templates typically found in Microsoft Word. The
Templates point of a resume is to differentiate; using a template makes you conform

Heading
The heading section contains your name, phone number and your University or professional email address. Add in your
LinkedIn URL as well if it’s in great shape. Include your LinkedIn profile link and be sure to customize your LinkedIn URL.
For directions on how to do this, please visit this helpful LinkedIn article. Your full address is optional. Your name should
be the largest item on your resume. Avoid using the header function as it does not scan well into applicant tracking
systems that review resumes.

Using a preferred name on your resume: A resume is not a legal document, so it is acceptable to use your preferred
name on the resume. You can handle this by listing a first initial, followed by their preferred name; others identify their
preferred name in quotes, e.g: K. Micah Jones, or Kelsey “Micah” Jones. If application forms specifically request legal
name, you should list your legal name as it may be used for a background check. The issue is complex, depending on
state and local anti-discrimination policies and it may be helpful to consult with additional legal resources. You will need
to use your legal name for purposes of background checks, social security documents, and insurance forms.

HEADING EXAMPLE:

Michael Fisher 3
(203) 876-8954 • [email protected]
http://linkedin.com/in/michaelfisher
Objective vs. Profile/ Summary of Skills
Many recruiters recommend a Profile or Expertise section instead of an Objective statement. This section provides an
overview of your skills and experience in 2-3 sentences or through the use of bullets. Avoid generic statements and try
to use keywords from your industry that reflect your skill set.

EXAMPLES

Skills:
Mechanical Engineering graduate student with team-based experience in the classroom and
workplace. Proficient in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS Workbench, MATLAB, Hpermesh, and
Microsoft Office.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS
• Creative marketing professional with experience in retail and advertising
• Ability to construct strategic plans and formulate company goals
• Possess knowledge of buyer behavior, product management and competitive marketing strategies

Profile:
Skilled Human Resources professional who is capable of organizing solid training and development
programs. Proficient in data research and SPSS. Knowledgeable in benefit administration and conflict
resolution.

You only need one of the above-mentioned sections, not all three. Pick the best format for you considering your skills
and experience.
Education
For most college students, your education section is going to be your selling point and should come before your
experience section. As you accumulate experience, your education may fall further down on your resume. You do not
need to list your high school as a graduate student, so be sure to remove all high school information from your resume.

It is essential to include the following:

• Name of your university (University of New Haven) and your undergraduate university
• University location of both (West Haven, CT for the University of New Haven – not New Haven!)
• Both of your degrees (include concentrations). Include additional degrees/certifications as appropriate.
• Graduation date (without using the word “Expected”). The University awards degrees in May, August & January
(not December).
• GPA (if it is a 3.0 or higher), Honors, Scholarships, Awards, etc.
If you attended another University but did not graduate, it is optional to include the name of the school and dates
attended.

EDUCATION EXAMPLE:

EDUCATION
University of New Haven West Haven, CT
Master of Business Administration May 20xx

Southern Connecticut State University New Haven, CT

Bachelor of Science, Psychology May 20xx

4
Experience
The best way to begin writing your experience section is to grab several sheets of paper and write one experience at the
top of each page (internship, job, volunteer, etc.) and list everything that you have done during your experience. Once
you have listed all of this information, it will be easier for you to develop this section. Then, incorporate the most
important aspects of your positions into strong, action-oriented statements using our list of action words. If you are not
currently at a specific job, all action words should be in the past tense. List your content in order of importance.

When writing your bulleted statements for positions held, think of where you added value to an organization and
quantify where possible. Did you increase sales? If so, how much did you increase sales? Did you streamline processes?
If you trained or supervised, how many individuals did you lead? Stay away from solely listing your job duties. You will
want your resume to highlight the skills you have obtained from your various experiences. Think of formatting your
statements in this manner:

Action + Result + Outcomes = SKILLS

EXPERIENCE EXAMPLES:

RELATED EXPERIENCE
Case Manager New Haven, CT
Behavioral Health Association, Inc. June 20xx-Present
• Connect families with needed and available community resources to ensure quality of care
• Conduct various needs-based assessments to determine service eligibility for 6 families
• Provide comprehensive case management services through holding weekly status meetings
Substitute Teacher Miller, PA
Miller School District September 20xx-June 20xx
• Created a positive learning environment for children ages 8-12 through providing effective
instruction of lesson plans provided by teacher
• Maintained appropriate records and followed individualized education programs for students as
needed

INTERNSHIP
Danaher Plainville, CT
Electrical Engineer Intern July 20xx-May 20xx
• Designed, built and tested new system that was implemented in future processes
• Wrote effective work instructions that reduced downtime by 20%
• Reviewed agency audits to provide recommendations on how to decrease spending

*NOTE: You can and should have several sections that represent the depth and breadth of your experiences*

Consider a Relevant Experience section to group together part-time, full-time or internship positions you have held that
are directly related to your future career goal. You may also choose to have a Work Experience section, which can host
any other experiences, such as waiter/waitressing positions.

5
Additional Sections
If you have been more than just a member or an organization(s) you could incorporate it
Leadership
into a leadership section (e.g. Peer Mentor).

If you have not held any leadership roles on campus but have been involved in different
Extracurricular/Co-
clubs/ organizations and campus activities, you should include it on your resume. The
Curricular Activities
activities section shows that you are involved on campus and are well rounded.

Community/ Volunteer
This section shows that you are motivated, involved and care about the community.
Work

Focus on specific computer skills for the job and/or industry. Leave off MS Office as MS
Office skills are assumed. Include other specialized skill sets such as laboratory
Computer/ Language Skills
equipment. If you also are fluent or have an understanding of other languages you should
specify them in this section.

If you do not have much related experience, this is a great addition. List about 4-8
Related Coursework
relevant courses. Key work is relevant – only list courses related to the job.

This section works well for students that engage in team-based projects in business,
engineering or other disciplines. List the name of your project, the semester it was
Related Projects
completed, as well as project goals and outcomes. Focus on what you did as part of the
project.

Professional Development You could include any conferences you attended in this section.

In this section you could include any papers or research you have presented in at
Paper Presentations
conferences.

Remember: A resume is designed to highlight your personal qualifications. The order of your sections may differ from
someone who has a similar educational background. You can have more than one resume directed towards specific job
positions.

*Please note: This guide provides basic information relevant to all career/industry types. Different resume formats exist
for various career paths. Ex: if you are pursuing a position that is technical in nature, your Computer Skills section will be
up higher on your resume. For science-related positions, Lab Skills will also be placed higher up. Art/design students may
have pictures or graphics to highlight creativity. If you have questions on what type of format is right for you, please
contact the Career Development Center.

What NOT to Include on a Resume

• A picture, your social security number, your birthdate
• Marital status, height and weight
• The words “I,” “my,” or other forms of the first person (e.g. “I was responsible for…”)
• Full sentences or paragraphs – use bullets or sentence fragments instead
• “Responsibilities included…” Your resume should be more than a listing of tasks
• References or a line stating that “references are available upon request”

Writing a Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A Curriculum Vitae, often called a CV or vita, is used to provide a more in-depth summary of your experience and skills.
The CV is longer than a resume and is typically used when applying for jobs related to academic/teaching positions,
scientific research, or medical positions. Most other job opportunities will require a resume. As with a resume, you
should try to match your CV to the position you are applying for, therefore, including information about experience you
have in the field is beneficial. Make sure the information is clearly laid out and is logistically ordered.

When Should a Curriculum Vitae (CV) Be Used?

A CV can be used when you are applying for international*, academic/education, scientific, medical or research positions
or when applying for fellowships or grants.

*If you are applying for a position abroad, be sure to research the type of information needed for your CV. Some
countries like to see personal details such as a picture, age, or marital status while companies in the United States do
not want to see that type of information listed. With the exception of the US, most other countries use the term CV
rather than resume.

Content of a Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Below are the areas of content often included on a CV. They are much more detailed than a resume- remember length is
not an issue with CVs! Depending on the position you are applying for, some of these content areas may not be needed
and can be excluded from your CV.

• Name and contact info

• Areas of research interests
• Education (do not need to include high school)
• Certifications/Training/Licenses
• Grants, Honors, and Awards
• Publications and Presentations
• Professional Development
• Research Experience
• Work Experience
• Teaching Experience
• Scholarly or Professional Memberships
• Technical/Specialized Skills
• Volunteer Experience
• Language Abilities
• References

Creating a Reference Page

Typically, references should not be included on your resume. However, when asked to provide a list of references, you
should have a reference page handy. It is important to note that you should contact your referrers and ask them ahead
of time if they would be comfortable being a reference for you, so they are not caught off guard when they receive a
phone call and have time to plan what they want to say. Also, make sure to ask the referrer if there is a certain email or
phone number they would prefer to have listed. Some individuals may not prefer to have their personal extension or
email given out, so be to ask for their preference.

A good rule of thumb is to have a diverse amount of referrers, such as one professor and one work supervisor. Personal
friends may not be accepted as a reference to some employers, and therefore it is important to make positive
connections with your professors and supervisors throughout your academic career!

In regards to formatting, be sure to list each reference in reverse chronological order that corresponds with your resume
(newest first!), and include all relevant information that corresponds to the referrer.

The reference page should state the following:

• Your Contact Information

• Name
• Position Title
• Company
• Company Address
• Phone Number
• Email Address
