Question No. 1: (Marks 10)
Consider a smart home setup, where a star topology network is employed. At the center of this network, there
exists a powerful smart home hub, controlling all connected devices. Five different nodes (computers) represent
various smart devices distributed throughout the home network. Mentioned below are the labeling of the topology
design.
Central Hub: Smart home controller in the living room (should be labeled with your vuid)
Node 1: Smart thermostat in the hallway
Node 2: Smart security camera system around the exterior
Node 3: Smart refrigerator in the kitchen
Node 4: Smart lighting system in the bedroom
Node 5: Smart speaker system in the home office
This star topology network enables seamless communication between all devices and the central hub, facilitating
efficient automation and control of the smart home environment. Each node is connected to the central hub; hence
it can interact independently, enhancing convenience, comfort, and security for the residents.
In this scenario, you must design and structure the Star Topology with the proper device configuration using the
Cisco Packet Tracer. You can configure each node in your smart home-based network with the following static IP
addresses:
Central Hub: Smart home controller in the living room (should be labeled with your VUID)
Node 1: 192.168.1.3
Node 2: 192.168.1.4
Node 3: 192.168.1.6
Node 4: 192.168.1.9
Node 5: 192.168.1.11
To Design a smart home setup in Packet Tracer with the help of PCs (representing various home
devices) connected in the STAR network topology, we need to perform the following tasks:
1- Open the Packet Tracer application with a new project in Cisco Packet Tracer.
2- To add a PC to the network, We need to select “End Devices” from the Network
component box and pick “PC” to add to the workspace.
3- Peapeat this process to add 5 PCs required to setup the smart home network.
4- To add the central hub device needed to control the home network, go to Network
Devices, then select a suitable Hub device (i.e. PT-Hub) from the Hub devices.
5- Now, we need to change the device labels as mentioned in the assignment file. To change
the label of Node PC0, click on the Device. A window will appear for the configuration
of the PC0 node. In the PC0 configuration window, click on the “Config” Tab and
Change the label from “PC0” to “Thermostat”.
The label of the device will be changed to “Thermostat”.
6- Similarly, we need to repeat the process to change the labels of all the PCs and Hub
devices as instructed in the assignment file:
7- Now we need to connect the devices in the STAR network topology by connecting each
PC to the central HUB. For this purpose, we need to go to “Connections” and select
“Copper Straight-through” cable to connect the central hub to the “Thermostat” device.
a. After Selecting the “Copper Straight-through” cable, click on the central hub and
choose the “FastEthernet0” port of the hub.
b. Now, connect the other end of the cable to the “Thermostat” device by clicking on
the Device and choosing the “FastEthernet0” port.
8- The device “Thermostat” is now connected to the Central Hub. Similarly, repeat this
process to connect all other devices (PCs) to the remaining ports of the central hub.
This completes the process of connecting PCs to a central hub to form a STAR network
topology.
Now we need to configure each node with the given static IP addresses.
Node 1: 192.168.1.3
Node 2: 192.168.1.4
Node 3: 192.168.1.6
Node 4: 192.168.1.9
Node 5: 192.168.1.11
1- So, click on the Node 1 “Thermostat” device to open the configuration window.
2- Open the “Config” tab and pick the FastEthernet0 port from the Interface settings.
3- It will open the settings for the “FastEthernet0” port of the Thermostat device.
4- In the IP Configuration part, you need to choose the Static IP configuration.
5- Then enter the IP address for Node1 which is “192.168.1.3” in the text box for “IPv4
Address”.
It will automatically set the subnet mask. No need to change the subnet mask and IP
configuration of Node 1 (Thermostat) is complete.
6- In a similar way, you can change the IP configuration of each node to assign the given
static IP address.
