UG11T4401 - Strength of Materials

Assignment: 01-B
Assignment for Grade Improvement
1.0 Consider a Beam supported on the Hinged Joints and subjected to the loads as
shown in the figure shown.

1.1 Calculate Support Reactions

1.2 Draw Shear Force Diagram and Bending Moment diagram. Label all salient
points: Point of Zero Shear Force. Maximum Bending Moment. Points of Contra-
flexure.
2.0 Consider a Beam supported on the Hinged Joints and subjected to the loads as
shown in the figure shown. The Beam has a Tee Cross section as shown in the
Figure.

2.1 Draw Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram. Label all salient points
2.2 Calculate the maximum Tensile Stress and Compressive stress in the beam. Bending
Stresses
2.3 If the orientation of Tee section is inverted then what will be the maximum tensile
and compressive bending stress?
3.0 Consider the cantilever beam subjected to the loads as shown in the figure.
3.1 Using the method of Double integration obtain the deflection of the free end of the
beam.
3.2 Using the method of Double Integration obtain the slope of the free end of the beam.
4.0 Consider the Hinge supported beam subjected to the loads as shown in the figure.

4.1 Using Macaulay’s Method obtain the slope of the beam at the point of supports.
4.2 Calculate the deflection of the beam at the mid span of the beam.
5.0 Consider a hinge supported beam subjected to the loading as shown in the figure
bellow. ( Solve both for 5A and 5B)

5.1 Using Area Moment theorems obtain the deflection of the beam at the extreme end
E – figure 5A
5.2 Using Moment Area Method obtain the slopes of the beam at the supports. In 5A
and 5B both
5.3 Obtain the deflection at the center of the beam. In figure 5B
6.0 Consider the thin curved bar in the form of a quadrant of a circle with a mean
radius R meter. It is held in the vertical plane by fixing the lower end on horizontal
plane and keeping top end free. The top end B is subjected to the vertical force of P
newton in downward direction.
6.1 Obtain the vertical and horizontal movement of point of application of force P
7.0 A steel Strut of total length 8 meter with a hollow circular cross section with inside
diameter 120 mm and outside diameter 160 mm. One end of the strut is fixed and
the another end is hinged.
7.1 Calculate Euler critical load to buckle the column.
7.2 Calculate the Buckling load using Gordon – Rankine formula. Consider modulus
of elasticity of the column material to be 200 GPa and Rankine’s Constant as
1.5625 E -04.
8.0 Consider a continuous beam ABC with all hinged supports at A, B and C. The
beam is subjected to the loads as shown in the figure 8A and 8B. (Both are different
problems.)
8A

8B

8.1 Obtain all support reactions at A, B and C of the Beam.

8.2 Draw the Shear force and Bending Moment Diagram.
9.0 Consider a fixed- fixed beam ( Built – In Beam, Canister Beam) supported and
subjected to a loading as shown in the figure.

9.1 Calculate all the support reactions of the beam.

9.2 Draw the SFD and BMD of the beam showing points of maximum bending moment.
9.3 Obtain Points of Contraflexure of the beam,
