supported span of 6m. Permissible stress is 10 N/mm2. Take depth as twice the
breadth. Design the beam. If the permissible stress in shear is 1 MPa, check for
shear.

Now test yourself with IMU question

A steel wire of 5 mm diameter is bend into a circular shape of 6 m radius.

Determine the maximum stress in the wire. Take E = 210 GN/m2.

A rectangular beam 300 mm wide is simply supported over a span of 8m. It

carries an uniformly distributed load of 30 KN/m over its entire length.
Calculated the depth of the cross section of the beam if the maximum bending
stress induced in the beam is not to exceed 120 MN/m2.

A simply supported beam carries a concentrated load of 20 KN at mid span

and an uniformly distributed load of 8 KN/m spread over its entire length. The
beam has a rectangular cross section with a width of 200 mm and a depth of
300mm. Calculate the length of the beam between the supports if the
maximum stress induced in the beam is not to exceed 16.667 N/m2 .

The radius of the arc of circle formed by the bent rod is 1.4 m. The stress at
the elastic limit is 250 MN/m2. The modulus of elasticity of the material of the
rod is 200 GN/m2. Calculate each of the following,
(a) the depth of the cross section of the rod,
(b) the moment of the resistance for a square cross section,
(c) the moment of the resistance for a circular cross section.

A beam of circular cross section is 200 mm in diameter is simply supported at

the ends and loaded by two concentric loads of 100 KN each, applied 250 mm
from the ends of the beam. Determine the position of the neutral axis and the
maximum bending stress in the beam. Given the modulus of elasticity E = 200
GPa.
