INTRODUCTION

As a student at President’s College, we take part in sports as part of our daily lives, whether for
recreation, training, or just meeting up with friends and colleagues. This Physical Education
School Base Assessment instructs that the students of fifth form are to host a competition with
each student having the responsibility of a role as an official in this competition.

The students of 11 Technology and 11 Agriculture along with the Physical Education teacher
agreed upon the sport of Volley Ball as it is a sport that is often overlooked. The students were
assigned roles by the Physical Education teacher to manage each aspect of the competition for
example the planning of the games, raising money for prizes and equipment as well as
advertisement.

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball was invented in December 1895 by William G.

Morgan, It was designed as an indoor sport for businessmen who
found the new game of basketball too robust. Morgan called the
sport “mintonette,” until a professor noted the volleying nature of
play and proposed the name of “volleyball.” The original rules
were written by Morgan and printed in the first edition of
the Official Handbook of the Athletic League of the Young Men’s
Christian Associations of North America (1897). These rules state
that you must have a net 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) high, a 25 ft × 50 ft
(7.6 m × 15.2 m) court, and any number of players. The game soon
proved to have wide appeal for both sexes in schools,
playgrounds, the armed forces, and other organizations in
the United States, and it was subsequently introduced to other
countries.
2

RULES OF VOLLEYBALL
 Only 6 players are allowed on the floor at any given time 3 being in the front
row and 3 in the back.
 Points are made on every serve for the winning team of the rally.
 Players may not hit the ball twice (a block is not considered a hit).
 Ball can be played off the net during a volley and on a serve.
 A ball hitting a boundary line is in.
 A ball is out if it hits the floor completely outside the court or any non-playable
area.
 It is legal to contact the ball with any part of a player’s body.
 It is illegal to catch, hold or throw the ball.
 A player cannot block or attack a serve from on or inside the 3-metre line.
 After the serve, front-line players may switch positions at the net (Rotation).
 Matches are made up of sets; the number depends on level of play.
 Maximum of three hits per side.
2

COURT INFORMATION

Each side of the net is 30 feet by 30 feet, the volleyball court is 30 feet wide and
60 feet long. The game played by two teams, usually of six players on a side, in
which the players use their hands to bat a ball back and forth over a high net,
trying to make the ball touch the court within the opponents’ playing area before
it can be returned. The new server will rotate from the right front of the court to
the right back of the court if your team receives the serve and all six of your
players must rotate once clockwise.
2

EQUIPMENT AND GEARS USED IN

VOLLEYBALL

BALL
Indoor and outdoor volleyballs greatly differ. Outdoor volleyballs are
stitched together instead of being molded like indoor volleyballs. As a
general rule, indoor volleyballs are made of leather, while outdoor balls
are usually made from a composite material that is resistant to water
and has a good grip.

OUTFIT
Depending on whether you are playing indoor or outdoor, and what
the weather is like when you play.
2

FOOTWEAR
The footwear has a gum rubber sole and are designed for the lateral
movement that the sport requires. The middle of the sole is usually
made of foam to make for a comfortable fell and landing.

KNEEPADS
Knee pads are the most important protection for volleyball players.
With many low balls being hit, you will need to kneel to reach them.
Bruising and floor burns can be common.
2

NET
An official volleyball net will measure 32 feet long by 39 inches tall.
For men's volleyball, it will be suspended eight feet off the ground,
while for women it will be seven feet and four inches.
2

BACKGROUND OF PROJECT
The grade 11 Technology and 11 Agriculture physical education students were
tasked with executing and hosting a tournament. There will be no restrictions on
the type of sport we can play in this tournament. A discussion was held between
our two classes, along with our physical education teacher, about what sport we
should be playing. We all agreed on volleyball because we felt that it's a sport that
seems often overlooked.

To be able to purchase the necessary materials and equipment, we decided to

organize a movie night as a fundraiser so that we could raise the funds we would
need to purchase these items. We then gave the funding to our physical education
teacher so he could make these purchases online. The equipment then came and
preparation for the tournament started.

ROLES OF PROJECT
An Event Official is required to perform the following duties:
1. Determining whether the ball lands inside or outside the court boundaries.
2. Supporting the main referee by providing input and feedback on calls, especially when
the referee’s view might be obstructed.
3. Communicating clearly and efficiently with each other and with the referee to maintain
consistency and accuracy.
4. Ensuring not to be bias towards and team or player and ensuring fair play for all teams
involved.

As an event official in volleyball, the researcher's role was crucial in ensuring the integrity and
fairness of the game. Throughout the match, the researcher diligently enforced boundary rules,
carefully observing the flight of the ball to determine whether it landed inside or outside the
court boundaries. Accurate calls on ball touches and out-of-bounds plays were made, with the
researcher swiftly signaling to the main referee whenever necessary. Collaborating closely with
other officials, effective communication was maintained to ensure consistency and clarity in
officiating decisions. During fast-paced rallies, the researcher relied on quick judgment and a
keen eye for detail to make split-second calls, contributing to the smooth flow of the game.
Upholding impartiality and professionalism at all times, the researcher remained neutral and
unbiased, ensuring fair play for both teams. Overall, the researcher's role as a Event Official was
essential in facilitating a competitive and enjoyable volleyball match for all participants and
spectators alike.
2

REFLECTION

Event official play a major role in any sport. The event official along with the main referee were
committed to their duties and the volleyball tournament was deemed successful. Event officials and the
main referee worked together in making the volleyball tournament traverse smooth, by communicating
with each other clearly and efficiently throughout the volleyball games in order to maintain consistency
and accuracy throughout each game. Ensuring not to be biased towards any team or player and ensuring
fair play for all teams involved.

The researcher completed his task with dedication and resolve since he played the role of an event official
in the execution of this volleyball tournament at President’s College. The researcher accepted their role
willing and completed them while ensuring that all responsibilities were fulfilled to the highest standards.
The researcher did a lot of reading ensuring to know the rules and the responsibilities that would come
with this role. As you can imagine, the events were both thrilling and competitive, but the main focus
was on having a good time.

Based on the feedback from spectators and players, this volleyball tournament was very funny
and competitive making it amazing to watch and take part in. There is no doubt that this
achievement would not have been possible without the dedicated physical education students
who worked hard and shown commitment to their studies and also Sir Willon Cameron our
physical education teacher that has been committed and guided us through carrying out this
tournament successfully but also through the completion of this Sba.
