MODE
The value that occur maximum number of times is known as mode. When the terms are
arranged in accenting order if each of the terms is occurring once, then there is no mode.
Mode is denoted as Z.
If all numbers occur once and some terms occur equal number of times then Mode =
3median – 2Mean.

Grouping Method
Mode is the item with maximum frequency. But when there is no marked difference
between the maximum frequency and the next maximum frequency, it may not be possible
to locate mode by mere inspection. In such a case it is desirable to prepare a grouping table
and an analysis table. The table helps us in ascertaining the value of mode.
Steps:
Continuous class
f 1−f 0
Mode (Z) = L1+ ( L -L )
2 f 1−f 0−f 2 2 1
1. In case of bi-modal series, the value of mode is ill-defined. In such a case mode is
calculated by using the empirical formula
Mode= 3Median – 2Mean
2. If 2f1-f0-f2 comes out to be zero, the value of mode is obtained by using the following
formula:
f 1−f 0
Z = L1+ ( L -L )
|f 1−f 0|+¿ f 1−f 2∨¿ ¿ 2 1
3. If the frequency of the preceding class is greater than the frequency of the Modal
class then Mode would be
f2
Z = L1+ ( L -L )
f 0+ f 2 2 1
