Reading
Directions: In this section you will read several passages. Each 1 is followed by several questions.
You are to choose the 1 best answer, A, B, C, or D, to each question.
Answer all questions about the information in a passage on the basis of what is stated or
implied in that passage.
1 The pangolin is a fascinating animal to see. Its entire body—including the tail—is covered
with hard scales. The scales protect the pangolin. They’re sharp and can be used for self-
defense. When in danger, the pangolin rolls itself into a spiky ball. Then it looks a little like
a pineapple. The pangolins are hunted by some animals, including lions, tigers, leopards,
5 and crocodiles. None of these, however, are responsible for the declining pangolin
population.
The hard scales that are supposed to protect the pangolin in the wild in fact put the animal
at risk from another predator—humans. Pangolin scales are highly valued in traditional
Chinese medicine. Also, pangolin meat, which is very expensive, is eaten by some very
10 wealthy people in some cultures. It is illegal to hunt pangolins—they have been protected
under international laws since 2016—but every year, thousands of pangolins are traded
illegally.
Pangolins live in Asia and Africa. Their habitats are grasslands and forests. Pangolins in Asia
are critically endangered. This means that there is a very high risk that they will become
15 extinct in the wild. The African pangolins are considered vulnerable. This means that they
will soon be endangered. If the demand for pangolin scales decreased, the population in
the wild would increase. People shouldn’t ignore this simple solution.
8. It can be inferred from the passage that the declining pangolin population is a result of
a) Wild predators
b) Human behavior
c) Lack of natural habitats
d) Decreasing demand of pangolin scales
