Vehicle electronics
Introduction
The electrical system is designed as a computer network.

Every truck has a number of control units, which

are connected to each other via data buses. All
communication is carried out through the data buses,
according to the standards SAE J1708/1587 and J1939.

Some control units are standard components, for example

vehicle control unit (VECU), light control module (LCM),
engine control unit (EECU) and the instrument cluster.
Others are mounted only when extra equipment is chosen
on the truck, for example control units for automatic
gearboxes (Powertronic, Geartronic and I-Shift) and
control unit for body builder features (BBM).

This type of electrical system has fewer components,

sensors and cables compared to a conventional electrical
system. A large amount of information is available on the
data buses, which the body builder can utilise to operate
and regulate functions, for example power take-off,
pre-set engine speed and engine shut down.

In order to utilise the body builder features effectively, the

variants and components are described on the following
pages.

WARNING
It is strictly forbidden to connect to the CAN-buses
(1–3). This could severely affect the drivability.

Parameter information
The functions are possible to tailor make by changing the
values of the software parameters.

Some parameters are given a preset value, and other

parameters are delivered deactivated from the factory
and have to be activated and given a desired value. This
is carried out using the Volvo tools VCADS-Pro (see
screen-dump below) or Body Builder Pro.

The parameters are divided into two different categories:

• Vehicle parameters. Can only be modified by
connection to the Volvo vehicle database, VDA. The
tool is connected to the truck diagnosis connector,
T3009445
located above the clutch pedal (see illustration).
• Customer parameters. Can be modified directly. If
the body builder is not able to program the parameters
himself, they can ask a dealer for help.

Vehicle Electronic Control Unit (VECU)

General
Vehicle Electronic Control Unit (VECU) is a standard
control unit. It is prepared to control one Power Take Off
(PTO).
If more than one PTO is necessary a control unit for
body builder, called Body Builder Module (BBM), must
be installed.

Power take-off 1 (PTO1)

Function
This section describes the functionality of the Vehicle
Electronic Control Unit (VECU) controlled “Power Take
Off 1” (PTO1).
The VECU can control one PTO only. If more PTOs
are required the Body Builder Module (BBM) must be
installed.

PTO out 1, activation of PTO1

The following conditions must be fulfilled during the whole
PTO session:
• QP and XO shall always be “Yes”
• PTO switch is in the ON-position; PtoEnableSwitch
(S28A).

The value of the parameter code XN describes which

PTO-type the VECU manages. The parameter can take
the values:
• Transmission PTO #1
Automatic gearbox: If an automatic gearbox (with
transmission mounted PTO) is installed the TECU
(Transmission Control Unit) activates the output.
Manual gearbox: If a manual gearbox is installed the
VECU activates the output.
• Transmission PTO #2. Second transmission power
take-off (controlled from BBM) can be set to the same
function as Transmission PTO #1.
• Engine PTO #1. If engine PTO is mounted, the VECU
activates the output.
• Engine PTO #2. The same function as Engine PTO
#1.
Common to all values of parameter code XN:
Before the output is set for the first time PtoEnableSwitch
(S28A) must have been inactivated at least once.

When the truck is delivered from factory with a PTO

mounted, the parameter code XN is set to the right
value for the PTO that is mounted. (See parameter XN
description).

If engine speed control and PTO are both active and

the PTO is deactivated, engine speed control is also
deactivated.

If engine speed control and PTO are both active and the
engine speed control is deactivated, the PTO stays active.
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group Release Page
Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 6(84)

PTO in I-Shift gearboxes

Excessive engine PTO loads can cause gear shift
problems. To avoid this, engine PTO loads while driving
should be limited to:
• 300 Nm, for D13 and D16
• 200 Nm, for D9 and D11
Higher engine PTO loads are allowed for a vehicle while
standing still or driving on the start gear without shifting.

When driving with a gearbox mounted PTO engaged, the

gearbox will not change gear.

When engine speed limitations are active, the I-shift

gearbox will adapt the gear selection strategy to active
engine speed limitation.

When the truck is delivered from factory with PTER1400

or variable HPE-pump, a switch is mounted that can be
used to control PTO-related equipment (max. load 1A).
This switch will also bring the engine ECU in PTO-mode.

PTO without electrical control

To secure good gear selection and gearshift, the

Transmission Electronic Control Unit (TECU) must
estimate how much of the engine torque that is used to
propel the vehicle and how much that is consumed by
other loads (PTO:s). To do this, the TECU must know
when the engine torque can be present.

As default, the TECU assumes that engine PTO is present

when any of the engine PTO buttons are activated. When
parameter GJJ is set to Yes, it will assume that engine
PTO can always be present.

For related parameters, see table 2.

Gearbox mounted PTO

For I-Shift gearboxes it is possible to set parameter codes

that defines which split gear to engage when transmission
power take off 1 and 2 are engaged. Those parameter
codes are located in the TECU.

For related parameters, see table 2.

Engine speed control, activation

Engine speed can be controlled via the cruise control
(CC) switches.

The requirement is that the cruise control switch is in the

ON-position.

The activation or deactivation of the engine speed control

can be set to be dependant on the status of the parking
brake, brake pedal or clutch pedal.

When any of the CC switches (CC set+ or CC set)

are pressed, the current engine speed will be set as
a reference speed, if it is within the valid range of
parameters ANF - AND. If the current engine speed is
outside those limits, the closest limit will be used.

The reference engine speed can be regulated up or down

in steps of 50 rpm (the size of steps can be adapted
in parameters RT/BXI). If any of the CC switches are
activated for a longer period of time than 0,5 seconds,
the engine speed trim will go into a ramp behaviour (the
delay time value can be changed with parameter DHA).
This ramp will continue as long as the switch is pressed.
When the CC switch is released the current engine speed
will be recorded as a reference speed.

Pressing the RESUME switch.

When activating the RESUME switch, the value in

parameter ANE will be used as a reference speed.

There are two ways of adjusting the reference engine

speed:
• Use the accelerator pedal to obtain the desired engine
speed and then press the CC set+ or CC set- switch.
The current engine speed will thereby be set as a
reference speed.
• Press the CC set+ / set- switch. In this case
activation will cause the reference speed to be
increased/decreased by 50 rpm. Pressing the switch
longer than 0,5 seconds will change to ramp behaviour.
A number of consecutive short activations will cause the
reference speed to be increased/decreased proportionally.

Body Builder Module (BBM)

General
The Body Builder Module (BBM) is a control unit unique
for body builders. BBM must be ordered together with
the vehicle.

To equip the vehicle with a BBM, any of the variants

ELCE-CK, SPEED-DU or SPDU-S must be ordered
when specifying the truck. Those variants include special
set-ups with BBM in the vehicle electronic control unit
(VECU).

A wire harness is routed from the BBM to a 31–pin

connector in the chassis frame rail. For detailed
information about the 31-pin body builder’s connector,
see the table on pages 12–13.

In the BBM, there are an amount of adjustable

parameters. To be able to adjust or modify those
parameters, any of the Volvo tools VCADS-Pro or Body
Builder Pro has to be used.

Not all products are supported by all parameters. Please

Power take-off control

Function
This section describes the BBM functionality Power
take-off control. With this function it is in a configerable
way possible to control the engaging of PTO equipment.
Three equal blocks are accessible for set-up: PTO out 2,
PTO out 3 and PTO out 4. (PTO out X will represent them
in the following text).

Maximum four PTO can be set up with individually entry

conditions, one in VECU and three in BBM. Both engine
and transmission PTO can coexist.

Refer to page for wiring scheme on “Examples,

installations of PTOs”, page 26

Requirement
Each PTO must have different values on parameter:
“PTO Out mount” (ZA, ZJ or ZS).
VECU is default using the parameter setting Engine#1.

Three different inputs are available for controlling the

engaging of the PTO equipment. They have each equal
parameter set up.
The value on parameter: “PTO Out mount” (ZA, ZJ or
ZS), which corresponds to PTO OutX, is used to identify
for TECU and EECU where the actual PTO is installed.
The parameter can take the values:
• Transmission #1.
• Transmission #2.
• Engine #1.
• Engine #2.

Gearbox mounted PTO:

• Manual gearbox
PTO will be activated by BBM, PTO OutX. The
parameters could be set to Transmission #1 or
Transmission #2.
• Automatic gearbox
PTO is requested by BBM and activated from
TECU (transmission ECU) outputs. In this case the
parameters have to be set to Transmission #1 or
Transmission #2. Note that BBM when the entry
conditions are fulfilled always activates PTO OutX,
even though an automatic gearbox is present, and
therefor nothing should be connected to the output.
Engine mounted PTO:
• PTO will be activated by BBM, PTO out X. The
parameters shall be set to Engine #1 or Engine #2.
Driver information and feedback
• When any PTO is active, a symbol “PTO” will be shown
in the instrument cluster display.
There is a feedback signal, (DO L) on BBM pin BBA
11, active when any PTO is active.

Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 20(84)

Entry conditions
Level or edge trig is set by parameter: “PTO Out engage
condition edge trig” (YT, ZC or ZL).

CAUTION
The edge trig parameter shall always be set to“Yes”
when using a PTO on a manual gearbox, in order to
avoid severe damages to the PTO.

Mandatory conditions:
• PTOX Dash Switch activated.
• Engine speed above 500 rpm for more than two
seconds.
• If the engine speed signal or the road speed signal is
corrupt , the PTO will not engage.

Note: After two seconds this criteria is not used.

• Engine speed below (YY, ZH or ZQ) see following
tables.
• Vehicle speed below (YZ, ZI or ZR) see following
tables.
Edge trig, description
When Edge trig is set to “Yes”:
If the function shall be reactivated, after that some of
the criterias not have been fulfilled. Must the dash
switch be set off → on. This reactivates the function.
When Edge trig is set to “No”:
The function is activated when all criterias are fulfilled.
Without demands on the dash switch to be set off → on.

Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 21(84)

Selectable conditions
When more than one limitation of the same type is active
at the same time, priority will be given to that one with
the lowest value.
• During the PTO out is active, it is possible to limit the
engine speed by setting parameter “PTO out engine
speed limit” (ZB, ZK or ZT) to “Yes” (default setting).
The engine speed will then be limit to the value set
in parameter “PTO Out engine speed below” (YY, ZH
or ZQ). The engine speed must be below the limiting
value (YY, ZH or ZQ) to allow activation of PTO Out.
• When ZB, ZK or ZT is set to "No" the PTO will not be
possible to activate when the engine speed is above
the value set in parameter YY, ZH or ZQ, but when the
PTO is engaged, no engine speed limit will be active
• PTO, minimum engine speed, (IGF, IGG, IGH). A
minimum engine speed related to engaged PTO, to
ensure that sufficient engine torque is available. This
minimum engine speed will only be active when gear is
in neutral, and where applicable, clutch pedal released,
which mean for manual gearboxes that a neutral gear
switch has to be mounted.
• Default setting of 500 rpm means that the minimum
engine speed function is switched off. Changing to any
other value will enable this function. This means that
when the related PTO is active, engine speed control
can only be performed from the BBM and not from
the VECU.
• Parking brake applied. Note that when this condition
is selected, the PTO will disengage when the parking
brake is released, and make sure that the used PTO
can handle disengagement under load conditions.
• Gear in neutral. For manual gearboxes, a neutral
switch has to be mounted acc. to VBI instructions.
• Gearbox in low split gear. For I-shift, also consider
parameter codes GJG and GJH, described below PTO
out 1.
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group Release Page
Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 22(84)

Exit-conditions
• PTO Dash switch deactivated.
• Parking brake released (when selected).
• Gear engaged (when selected).
• Gear in high split gear (when selected).

Increasing and decreasing engine speed ramps

To each PTO Out there are independent parameters
for “PTO X engine speed increasing ramp” and “PTO X
engine speed decreasing ramp.”

PTO X Engine speed ramps are further described in the

chapter “Engine speed control”.

Engine speed control

Engine Speed Control gives access to four equal set up Driver information
blocks which can be used to control the engine speed
during PTO use.
Another type of engine speed control is aimed to be used
when driving “cross-country”.
When any type of engine speed control is active, it is not
possible to engage the cruise control.

When Engine Speed Control is active, a symbol “EC” will

be shown in the instrument cluster display.
When engine speed control is preformed from the
BBM, the engine speed control from VECU can not be
performed at the same time. However the CC Set+ and
CC Set- buttons will be read from the BBM. T9008947

Engine speed mode 1, 2, 3 and 4, function

When any of the engine speed modes are active, the
pre-set value can be adjusted, up or down with SET+ or –
buttons according to the wiring diagram on next page.

Installation example: A rotary switch is used to switch

between the engine speed modes 1–4.

When any of the engine speed modes are enabled, the

cruise control can not be used.

T9008723

Note: In this example some wires at the BBM has been

moved to other positions, in order to connect the cable
harness to X06 the best way.

Requirement
When activating the digital input Engine Speed ModeX
the corresponding Engine Speed ModeX set-up will
become active, if the selected conditions are fulfilled.

If more than one Engine Speed ModeX inputs are active

at the same time, engine speed mode 1 has the lowest
priority and engine speed mode 4 the highest.

Activation
Parameter: "Engine Speed Mode enable" (IC, ID, IE or
Y0) will enable the Engine Speed ModeX set-ups. When
any input Engine Speed ModeX is activated the engine
speed will be what is set in parameter: "Engine Speed
ModeX, Engine resume speed" (HB, HC, HD and YN).
The value in parameter: "Engine Speed ModeX, Engine
resume speed" (HB, HC, HD and YN) must be set within
the interval "Engine Speed Mode, max engine speed"
and "Engine Speed Mode, min engine speed" (AA and
DC). "Engine Speed Modes can be edge trigged or level
trigged, Edge trig" (YJ, YK, YL or YM).

Edge trig, description

When Edge trig is set to “Yes”:
If the function shall be reactivated, after that some of
the criterias not have been fulfilled, the dash switch
must be set off → on.
When Edge trig is set to“ No”:
The function is activated when all criterias are fulfilled.
Without demands on the dash switch to be set off → on.

Increasing and decreasing engine speed ramps

To each PTO Out there are connected independent
parameters for "PTO X engine speed increasing rams"
and "PTO X engine speed decreasing ramp". Those
ramps will be followed when the related PTO Out is active,
and an engine speed mode requested or left. It is possible
to vary the ramp between 1 to 250 rpm per second. When
parameter: "PTO X engine speed increasing ramps" or
"PTO X engine speed decreasing ramp" is set to zero the
target speed will be achieved by following the value of the
EMS (engine control unit) parameters FRK for ramping up
(default 350 rpm/s.) and FRL for ramping down (default
1000 rpm/s.). If the engine, due to heavy load, not can
follow the requested ramp, the ramp will be requested
until the target engine speed is reached.

The accelerator pedal and second driver interface

overrides those ramps.

When no PTO is engaged and an engine speed mode

is requested, the ramp speed can be controlled by
parameters IHV and IHW. Also in this case the value
zero means follow the EMS ramp parameters FRK for
ramping up (default 350 rpm/s.) and FRL for ramping
down (default 1000 rpm/s.).

Delay
It is possible to delay the deactivation of “Engine
speed mode X” when the modes are left. The delay is
programmable between 1 to 25 seconds via parameter:
“Engine speed mode idle return delay” (HE, HF, HG or
YR).
If parameter is set to zero the active engine speed mode
will be left immediately when the input request is removed.
As soon as the delaying has started it is possible to enter
the same mode, or one of the other modes, provided that
an edge is detected.
This means that the ongoing delay does not have to be
terminated. If the conditions for the current mode become
invalid, no delay will take place.
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group Release Page
Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 32(84)

Adjusting
To adjust the engine speed when the function BBM Engine
Speed Control is active, there are three possibilities. If
the engine due to heavy load can not follow the requested
target value it will still be requested until the new value
is requested.
1 Depress the BBM input switches Engine Speed
increase or decrease (installed by the body builder,
marked B and C in attached wiring diagram Engine
speed control, suggestion 1 (stepless). Activation
will cause the reference speed to be increased or
decreased with the value set in parameter IF. It is
possible to adjust within the interval “PTO max engine
speed set” (DC, AA) The ramp can be varied between
1 to 250 rpm per second.
2 Depress the VECU input switches CC set+ or CC
set-. When using the CC set+/set- switches, the limits
within it is possible to adjust is controlled by VECU
parameters ANF default value 500 rpm and AND
default value 2500 rpm.
3 Use the accelerator pedal to obtain the desired engine
speed and then press the CC set+ or CC set- switch.
The current engine speed will hereby be set as PTO
reference speed.
Note: that the accelerator pedal will override an active
engine speed mode ramp.

RESUME
There is a resume function related to the engine speed
modes. This means that when the engine speed has
been adjusted from the default value for active mode, to
other value, a positive pulse on the resume digital input
BBA7 will bring the engine speed back to the default
value of the active engine speed mode.

This function can modified by setting parameter IFS to 1.

In that case the resume function will be toggling between
the by set+/set- selected value and the default value.
Every second pulse on BBA7 will bring the engine speed
back to the default value for active engine speed mode,
and every second pulse back to the modified value.
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group Release Page
Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 33(84)

Low idle regulation

Low idle regulation will always have priority over engine
speed modes, which means that the engine will always
struggle not to be below this engine speed, independent
of selected “Engine speed mode resume speed”.

Entry conditions
Mandatory conditions:
1 Parameter “Engine speed mode enable” (IC, ID, IE
or YO) = “Yes”
2 Digital input Engine Speed ModeX switch is activated.
A positive edge is needed to activate the input, it must
have been deactivated at least once each ignition
cycle, to prevent entry in case of a stuck on switch.
3 The engine is running.

Exit-conditions
If any of the conditions stated in the above entry
conditions not are fulfilled.

Engine speed control, used as “cross-country cruise control”

“Cross—country cruise control” is an engine speed
control that gives access to a set up which controls the
engine speed in a configurable way.

This function is aimed to be used when driving under

bumpy conditions, there it can be difficult to keep the
accelerator pedal in a constant position.
Cruise control or any of the four engine speed modes can
not be activated when the “Cross-country cruise control”
is enabled.

Activation
Parameter IFX will enable the “Cross-country cruise
control” engine speed mode setup.
By activating the digital input BBB 29 (DI L) “Cross-country
cruise control” will become enabled. When “Cross-country
cruise control” engine speed control is enabled, a symbol
“EC” will be shown in the instrument cluster display. This T9008947

is to indicate to the driver that engine speed control is

active, and that neither the cruise control, nor any of the
engine speed modes can be activated.

Now, if the conditions for “Cross-country cruise control”

are fulfilled then a press on the Set+ / Set- buttons will
start the “Cross-country cruise control” engine speed
governing and the engine speed will be the current engine
speed.

When the “Cross-country cruise control” is activated,

engine speed can be adjusted with the set+/set- buttons.
The change in engine speed by use of those buttons can
adjusted with parameter IIA.

The “Cross-country cruise control ” is combined with a

road speed limitation. The value of this limitation can
be changed with parameter IHO. If more than one road
speed limit is active at the same time, the lowest of those
will have priority.

Driver information
The icon in the instrument cluster display will change
from the earlier “EC” to an “XC”icon indicating that
“Cross-country cruise control” engine speed governing
has been activated

Deactivation
Depending of parameter settings, brake pedal,
clutch pedal and neutral gear could deactivate the
“Cross-country cruise control”. Applying the parking
brake or use of auxiliary brakes will always deactivate the
“Cross-country cruise control”.

Note: The “Cross-country cruise control” will not be

switched off by the normal cruise control switch. It has to
be switched off with the “Cross-country cruise control”

Road speed limit (second), RSL2

This page describes the function in trucks ordered with
the variant ELCE-CK. For trucks ordered SPEED-DU, see
following page.

Function
This function gives possibility to limit the vehicle speed to
a lower speed than the one set by legislation demands.
RSL2 function also includes possibility to inhibit the
reverse gear from being engaged in trucks equipped with
automatic gearbox (Powertronic) or with I-Shift, if the
I-Shift gearbox is equipped with the variant APF-ENH.
(Only the reverse gear will be inhibited from being
engaged, no brake appliance will be performed in this
variant.) The reverse inhibit function is further described

SPEED-DU, Road speed limit (second), RSL2

Description
SPEED-DU is a special variant for rear loading refuse
collection vehicles, (RCV), intended to follow the demands
in EN1501-1 for “foot step” at the back of the truck. Trucks
ordered with the variant SPEED-DU are equipped with a
BBM electronic control unit, a connector with prepared
wires in the frame rail and a connector in the body builder
electrical centre in the cab. Both connectors contain wires
(signals) often used by RCVs.

For a description of the variant SPEED-DU and

information regarding the pinout of connector “NR”, see
also chapter “Installation, examples”.

For complete electrical schematics, see Wiring diagram

page “NU”.

Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group Release Page
Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 46(84)

Function
This function limits the vehicle speed to 30 km/h when
there is an input from the chassis on the “foot step” input.
At the same time as the RSL2 is active, a reverse inhibit
function is enabled. This function will apply the brakes
and force the engine to low idle if the gear is put in reverse
gear position during the time the “foot step” input is active.

It will also inhibit the reverse gear from being

engaged in trucks equipped with Powertronic- or with
I-Shift-gearboxes. This provided that the I-Shift gearbox
is equipped with the gearbox variant APF-ENH.

A release of the brakes and a reset of the inhibited

reverse gear can only be made by removing the “foot
step”input signal (step off the foot step) and then put the
gear lever into neutral gear position.
Pin 2 in the NS-connector in the body builder electrical
centre or pin 16 in the 31–pole body builder chassis
connector (X06:16) is the input for “foot step”, digital
input, active low.

Override of the road speed limitation can be performed by

removing the input to above mentioned pins. It is up to
the body-builder to secure override and related penalty
requirements.

Driver information
When any Road speed Limit is active, a symbol RSL will
be shown in the instrument cluster display.

T9008949

There will be a special icon in the instrument when the

RSL2 and/or reverse inhibit function is active.

Speed output
Function
This signal is provided for body builders to simplify
integration with other equipment. It is a configurable
digital output signal, which can be set up to transmit:
• Vehicle speed as a digital output
• Vehicle speed as a FM/PWM
• Engine speed as a FM signal
• Engine Torque as a PWM signal
In the FM/PWM signal , the duty cycle is proportional to
the vehicle speed.

PWM = Puls Width Modulated

FM = Frequency Modulated

Note: A vehicle speed signal can also be taken from the

tachograph.
See Volvo body builder instructions “Standard
Equipment”.

Note: A load of approximately 2,7 kΩ is required for

the signal to be able to reach a low level (0V = low, 24V
= high). This resistance value is suitable for all settings
of GT irrespective of load.

Description
• Vehicle speed as digital output (GT = 0):
When parameter GT is set to 0 (zero) and LV to a
value greater than zero, the Speed Output will be set
up as a digital output (maximum load 2 A). The output
will switch from low to high if the velocity exceeds the
value of parameter LV, and switch from high to low if
the velocity thereafter drops below parameter LV. If
parameter SD is set to Yes, an inverse function will
be obtained on Speed Output (a high level below the
speed set in parameter LV, and a low level above).
• Vehicle speed as a FM/PWM signal (GT = 1):
When parameter GT is set to 1 and parameter LV is set
to 0 (zero) a FM/PWM signal with variable frequency
and duty cycle will be generated on Speed Output.
The positive duty cycle time, Tduty, will however be
constant. See illustration.

T9008201
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group Release Page
Body builder instructions 8.11 95 22 53(84)

The period, T, for the frequency will reflect the vehicle

speed as shown in this formula: (1000x3600)
T=
KxV
T = period in ms.
K = velocity constant in pulses/km.
V = current velocity in km/h.

The duty cycle, Tduty, will be decided from the velocity

constant as shown in this formula: (16000)
TDUTY =
K
Tduty = positive duty cycle time in ms.
K = velocity constant, a scale factor defining the number
of pulses per kilometer. The constant 16 000 is chosen to
give 100% duty cycle when the speed equals 225 km/h.

Note: When the speed is less than 3 km/h the output is set
to constant low.

• Engine speed as FM signal (GT = 2):

When parameter GT is set to the value 2, the output
will be an FM engine speed signal. The engine speed
is transformed into a FM signal where the frequency
is proportional to the engine speed according to the
following formula:

z
f= • rpm
100

Where z is the value of parameter CZT (default 17).

T9008271

This relay will switch at speed, set in parameter LV.

The characteristics of the FM signal shall be in

accordance with the figure on the right. The duty cycle
of the output signal is 50%.

Example
At 600 rpm: f = 102 Hz and T = 9,8 ms
At 1200 rpm: f = 204 Hz and T = 4,9 ms T9056215

FM signal

• Engine Torque as PW M signal (GT = 3):

When parameter GT is set to the value 3, the output
will be a PWM engine torque signal. Engine Torque is
transformed into a PWM signal where the duty cycle
percentage is equal to the engine torque (engine torque
is received as a percentage). The characteristics of this
signal shall be in accordance with the figure on the right.
T9056216

Frequency “f” = 140 Hz which gives a period time

T = 1/140 s. PWM signal

Auto Neutral
Autoneutral is available in trucks with:
• Powertronic gearbox in combination with EBS
• I-Shift gearbox in combination with EBS and gearbox
variant APF-ENH

Function
This function can temporary set the automatic gearbox
into the neutral gear when brake pedal is depressed,
parking brake is applied or by external input only.

Autoneutral can be selected to be active in forward gear

only, in reverse gear only or in forward and reverse gear.

When all selected conditions are fulfilled, an active high

level (DI H) on the input Auto Neutral will temporary set
the automatic gearbox in neutral gear. The gear indication
in the instrument display will blink when the autoneutral is
active.
An active autoneutral can be detected on BBM pin BBB
15.
Neutral gear can also be detected if parameter AHZ is
set to “Yes”, then auto neutral (and normal neutral gear)
can be detected at BBB 18.

Autoneutral in forward gear can be combined with a

predefined engine speed. When this is selected, the
engine will be running at the engine speed selected in
parameter IGE during autoneutral sessions.

Auto Neutral in I-Shift gearbox

Note: To update a vehicle to variant APF-ENH (Enhanced
I-shift PTO functions), a conversion kit (part no 85109624)
can be ordered from Volvo Parts.

In an I-Shift gearbox, Auto Neutral can be performed by:

• Disengaging the clutch.

Normally preferred when the brake pedal is used for

activation. Since the clutch is open, no power can be
taken out from a gearbox mounted PTO. Therefore, an
engine mounted PTO should be used. (GJI set to YES).
• Shifting to neutral gear and close the clutch. T9008250

Normally preferred when the parking brake is used for

activation. Because the clutch is closed, power can be
taken from a gearbox mounted PTO. (Parameter GJI set

Split box – power take off

Function
Split box is a type of power take-off (PTO) which is
installed directly onto the propeller shaft. It is used when
regular PTO equipment could not transmit enough power.
A split box PTO can be used on vehicles equipped with
I-Shift, Powertronic or manual transmission.

T9008270

Split box PTO in I-Shift vehicles

Split box PTO can be used on I-Shift vehicles if the variant
APF-ENH is installed.
In I-Shift gearboxes, this function will activate gear 12
(highest gear) in gearboxes with highest gear as direct
gear, and gear 11 in gearboxes with overdrive. This
means that a split box can be used in the direct gear only.

Note: To update a vehicle to variant APF-ENH (Enhanced

I-shift PTO functions), a conversion kit (part no 85109624)
can be ordered from Volvo Parts.

Split box PTO in Powertronic vehicles

Highest gear and lock-up will be engaged.

Requirement
The feedback signal from the split box PTO is necessary
to have full "split box" functionality. For automatic
gearboxes, an active high level (DI H) on input split box
will request an activation of the direct gear.

Note: The vehicle speed must be zero and the parking

brake applied to enter split box session. When parameter
LJL is set to “No”, the parking brake can be released
without the split box disengaging. When parameters LJM
is set to “No”, the vehicle can be moved without the split
box disengaging. If the vehicle is intended to be moved
with the split box engaged, it is recommended that the
vehicle speed sensor is moved from the gearbox to the
outgoing axle of the split box. The tooth wheel in the
gearbox for the speed sensor has six teeth.
Remote start with gearbox in gear and an engaged split
box PTO is only possible in trucks with manual gearbox.
For trucks with I-shift or Powertronic gearboxes it is
recommended that a remote switch for gear selection is
installed.

Second Driver Interface

Function
This function is used when there are two driver locations
installed in the truck. It evaluates the position of the
second accelerator pedal.
A hand control interface can be connected instead of the
second accelerator pedal.

Note: No wires are prepared in the truck.

Two types of sensors can be connected to the input

Second Throttle:
• Control interface:
The control interface can be based on an ordinary
potentiometer and the input IVS Second Throttle
must not be used together with this interface. It is
essential that the value of the control interface that
shall be selected is within the zero throttle span to
allow overtaking.
• Second accelerator pedal
The pedal must be a Volvo standard accelerator pedal
equipped with an idle validation switch. The pedal’s
position will be evaluated via the analogue input
Second Throttle.
A road speed limit is connected to the second T9008827
accelerator pedal.
If more than one Road Speed Limit is active at the A = Second accelerator
same time, the lowest speed limit will have priority.
B = Idle validation switch
• Disable primary accelerator pedal
C = Switch, second accelerator
The primary accelerator pedal can be made inactive when
D = Potentiometer, 4 kΩ, ± 25%
there is a low input on pin BBB12, and the parameter EE
is set to 2. This can be done without a 2nd accelerator
pedal connected.
Figures are pin-out for Volvo accelerator pedal.
• Second gear lever (only Powertronic and I-shift)

Note: To switch control between the primary and

secondary gear lever, the parking brake must be applied
and the gearbox outgoing shaft must be at standstill.

Selected gear for automatic gearbox will be detected

via gear lever buttons connected to the digital inputs
Extra Gear Lever Forward, Neutral and Reverse.
Actual status will then be transmitted to transmission.
If more than one gear lever input is activated at the
same time, TECU will give priority to neutral position.

information system in all vehicles in a fleet, irrespective of
brand.
The FMS Gateway uses a common standard that has
been agreed and supported by the main European
truck manufacturers for communication between truck’s
electronic systems and on-board computers which used
to retrieve these data (FMS Standard1).

The proper way to receive internal vehicle data is via the

FMS Gateway. Volvo only allows connection of external
CAN communication via FMS Gateway or via BB CAN. T9034162

All other connection types or other methods of influencing

the truck’s internal CAN buses are prohibited. FMS Gateway is located inside the instrument panel.

The FMS Gateway connector is also connected to

the tachograph in order to support remote tachograph
information download.

WARNING
It is strictly forbidden to connect to the internal CAN
buses. This could severely affect the drivability of the
truck.

Upgrading
Order according to the following to upgrade to FMS 2.0:
Part number - 85130028

1For information on the FMS Standard please refer to:

Requirement
The FMS Gateway and the tachograph are each equipped
with 120 Ohm terminating resistors.
In trucks with both FMS Gateway and Tachograph
connected, the external FMS unit should not have
termination resistors.
In trucks without tachograph, the external FMS unit
should be equipped with a 120 Ohm termination resistor.
It is the responsibility of each installer to secure that the
CAN link from the FMS Gateway and from the tachograph
to the external FMS unit is terminated correctly.

For more details see the SAE J1939 standard.
