Barcode

Barcodes were invented in 1949 while QR codes were developed later in 1994. Barcodes store limited data for basic identification while QR codes can store more data types and amounts, making them more versatile. QR codes can also be scanned from any angle more quickly than barcodes.

Barcode & QR code

1.The history:
a) Barcode:
-Barcodes were invented by Norman Joseph Woodland and
Bernard Silver in 1949.
-However, it wasn’t until April 3rd 1973 that the UPC (Universal
Product Code) barcode was adopted as a standard for use in retail
stores in the United States, and the first barcode was scanned on
June 26th 1974 in a Marsh store in Troy, Ohio.

b) QR code:
- QR codes (Quick Response codes) have a more recent origin.
They were developed in 1994 by a Japanese company called
Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, for tracking automotive parts
during the manufacturing process.
-QR codes are two-dimensional and can store more data than
traditional barcodes. They consist of black squares arranged on a
white square grid, and they can be scanned from any angle.

2. The reason there is already a barcode but there is

also a QR code:
-Data Capacity: QR codes can store more information than
traditional barcodes. This makes QR codes more versatile for
various applications, especially when more data needs to be
encoded, such as in marketing, ticketing, or storing website links.
- Versatility: QR codes can store different types of data, including
numeric, alphanumeric, binary, and even special characters. This
versatility allows QR codes to be used in a wide range of industries
beyond retail, such as healthcare, logistics, and advertising.
- Ease of Scanning: QR codes can be scanned more quickly and
from any angle compared to traditional barcodes. This makes
them more user-friendly and suitable for applications where
scanning speed and convenience are important.
- Integration with Digital Platforms: QR codes are commonly used
to connect physical objects to digital content, such as websites,
apps, or multimedia. This integration with digital platforms has led
to the widespread adoption of QR codes in marketing and
information-sharing scenarios.
