Introduction
•) Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was a social reformer who was born in Delhi in 1817.
• He was stilled in Arabic, Persian, Mathematics and Medicine while he pursued his career in legal
system
• He became a judge in Delhi and was appointed as Chief Justice in Muradabad and Ghazipur
He wanted to work with British instead of fighting against the British so he established The Aligarh
Movement.
Beliefs
•1) He believed in the revival-of economic and social status of muslims in the subcontinent. After
Way of Independence, all was given to muslims both by British and Hindus due to which British
reduced the involvement of muslims in the affairs of the British India Muslims were not given
government jobs civil. services. & Sir Syed saw this and realised that British will not compensate with
muslims until muslims get off with the blame of War of Independence..
Impact:
S.S.A.K realised that the terrible- state of muslims would continue in subcontinent unless they let go
the resentment of the War of Independence. and build themselves socially and economically in the
subcontinent.
2) Sir Syed believed that muslim should mend their relations with British. Sir Syed knees that the only
way for muslims to survive is to have good relations with British. He knew that British are too strong
and fighting against them would be a foolish act so he wanted to improve the relations blu British
and 'Muslims. This would be advantageous for muslims as they will be given. more opportunities in
the civil service and will have job opportunities in army aswell. Sir Syed believed that If muslims will
not support and improve relations with British, they will remain backward and unprivileged while all
the favours would be taken. by Hindus.
Impact
Sir Syed saw prosperity for muslims by improving their relations with the British and by letting go of
an amosite (hatred) towards British for ending Mughal Empire.
3)Sir Syed wanted muslims to acquire western education. He believed that only way to progress in
British Raj was to acquire education and through their education, they should tot take jobs t in order
to uplift themselves, socially and economically He knew that without education muslim will remain
backward on it would lead to collective backwardness of muslim community. He wanted muslims to
a acquire western education and represent muslim community internationally. He believed that
political rights of muslims can be saved by Learning the ways of British

2)Encouraging Western education amore muslims. S.S wanted muslims to take advantage of British
education. He knew that British have progressed in the world due to development in science so
muslims should also acquire it, which will help them in obtaining government jobs and civil services.
Both these fields had hindus who were paid well and lived a very good life. Muslims and Hindus were
enemies and did-not wanted each other in the Muslims did-not wanted to go to the government
services offices against their as they believed that serving British was against their religion. However,
position and posts in government depended on western education and it had more say in the
subcontinent.

2) Sir Syed Ahmed Khan encouraged the growth of Western Education which was itself a very
difficult task. Hindu community learned Eng Language They took advantage from this education. and
secured government jobs. By 1971, there were 711 hindus who were ga government officers. while
only 92 muslims were This increased the strength of hindus rapidly as they were 2 progressing
through western education while muslims were uneducated and remained backward due to which
Sir Syed wanted to change the attitude of muslims of towards Western Education. The problem was
that muslims believed that acquiring western education will result in loss of their religion.S.S told
muslims that understanding modern scientific beliefs reveals the majesty of God

3) S.S formed a Scientific Society in 1863 at Ghazipur. Its main purpose was to make scientific writing
available for Indians. Indian society kept themselves away from science. S.S realised that British were
undefeatable because of their advancement in weapons, industries and machineries and Sir Syed
wanted to introduce modern technology for muslims which he thought would make muslim strong.
This society Translated the British works. in from Persian and English to urdu so that muslins can
understand it. This society brought an understanding blu muslims and" the world in a deeper manner

Sir syed successfully changed the perception of muslims about scientific developments, and modern
technology by creating awareness about scientific works which also led to the formation of Aligarh
Institute Gazette.
4) Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College was setup by SSAK in 1875 at Aligarh. S.S went to England to
study oxford university system and dreamt of making a muslim university in the subcontinent. He
tried to form a university but British didn't allow a university based on oxford system outside
England-so he declared it.as a college. This college provided both western and Islamic education so
muslims can join it without
Any hesitation. When muslims response-was great, the same Aligarh college became university
where future Pakistani leaders were educated.

Sir syed major step to educate. muslims brought great benefits to the muslim society, as some
historians believed that MAO college contributed the most for the formation of Pakistani as it
produced leaders like Liaquat Ali Khan.
5) Two Nation Treaty
S.S believed that Muslims and Hindus should get equal rights. S.S was also of a point of view that if
Hindus go in elections then muslims will never win as they are in minority and this way, democracy
will not work so open elections would be unfair for the muslims. S.S also opposed the role of
Congress on as it was predominantly a hindus party. He increased the political awareness that there
are two. nations who should be treated differently. Hindus also started to demand that Hindi should
be made an official language instead of Urdu. This was opposed by S.S as this would remove the
importance of muslims from the subcontinent

S. S proposed this theory to draw a line b/w two communities which could not live together and
should be treated differently according to their own beliefs and culture under British government in
sub continent
) Mohammedan Defence Alliance Earlier, its name was United patriotic alliance and it was formed to
oppose the Congress. However, the name was not very appealing to muslims as they did-not wanted
to be patriotic t British so its name was changed to Mohammedan Defence Alliance which started to
work for muslim of the subcontinent. This was further developed to muslin League and Pakistan
Movement. It was necessary to form as the extremist hindus who used to disrespect muslims , and it
was formed to protect and show that muslims are also united to protect their rights.
Impact
Sir Syed knew the political oppression faced by muslims from Hindus. S.S formed a political platform
to protect the political rights of muslims from the Hindu extremists so that muslims can strive to live
peacefully in the Subcontinent.
Impact
Sir Syed brought a change in the mindset of British about muslims through-his writing and tireless
works due to which British allowed muslims to play their role as an important community of the
subcontinent.
(2) Sir Syed improved the conditions of the muslims by starting Aligarh Movement. He provided
western education to the muslims along with Islamic teachings and through this, they were able to
obtain better? jobs. This social and economic improvement in muslim's condition revived their
confidence and self worth. Earlier, they were made to feel inferior by Hindus and British but this
revival made them stronger.
Impact
Si Sir Syed revived the status of muslims so that they could obtain better employment as-well as
improve their social status to fight for heir rights by giving the feeling of them the feeling of self
worth.
3) Sir Syed was the & one who worked to create political awareness by among the muslims. He knew
that if muslims would remain. unaware then they would be under the Hindu threat as they were
close to British and were quickly improving their status. He realised that it was extremely important
to counter Hindus. He formulated the Two Nation Theory which paved the way for partition in future
and that's why - he is known as Father of Pakistan."
