Group 5 - Experiment 3

This document discusses the load characteristics of a three-phase salient pole synchronous generator. It describes experiments conducted to measure voltage, current, power, and other values under resistive, inductive, and capacitive load conditions. Graphs of the results are also presented. The conclusion summarizes that power factor is unity for resistive loads, lagging for inductive loads, and leading for capacitive loads.

DISCUSSION

Consider a synchronous generator driven at constant speed and with constant

excitation. On an open circuit the terminal voltage Vt is the same as the open circuit e.m.f.
Eg. Suppose a unity-power-factor load be connected to the machine. The flow of load
current produces a voltage drop IaZs in the synchronous impedance, and terminal voltage
Vt is reduced. Fig. 1.12 shows the phasor diagram for three types of load. It will be seen
that the angle s between Eg and Vt increases with load, indicating a shift of the flux across
the pole faces due to cross- magnetization. The terminal voltage is obtained from the
complex summation.

so that the V/I curve, Fig. 1.13, is nearly an ellipse with semi-axes Eg and Isc. The
current Isc is that which flows when the load resistance is reduced to zero. The voltage Vt
falls to zero also and the machine is on short-circuit with Vt = 0 and Ia =Isc =Eg /Zs
~ Eg /Xs
which is the straight line marked for cosϕ = 0 lagging in Fig.1.14. A leading
load of zero power factor Fig. 1.14 will have the voltage

another straight line for which, by reason of the direct magnetizing effect of
leading currents, the voltage increases with load.

Intermediate load power factors produce voltage/current characteristics resembling

those in Fig: 1.13 The voltage-drop with load (i.e. the regulation) is clearly dependent
upon the power factor of the load. The short-circuit current Isc at which the load
terminal voltage falls to zero may be about 150 per cent (1.5 per unit) of normal
current in large modern machines.
Power angle characteristics
When the synchronous generator feeds power to the infinite bus-bar at constant
terminal voltage Vt as shown in the single line diagram in Fig: 1.22 the phasor
diagram for lagging power factor is shown if Fig: 1.23. For large size of generator
armature resistance, ra is negligible.

The per phase power delivered to the infinite bus is given by

Substitution of value of Ia cosqin power equation

The variation of power as derived above with respect to power-angle is plotted in Fig;
1.24. The power versus load angle characteristic curve has a sinusoidal shape and is
usually called power-angle characteristic of the cylindrical-rotor synchronous
machine. The power P, for the generator is taken as positive and therefore, for motor
as negative.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, after conducting this experiment, the load characteristic of

a three-phase salient pole synchronous generator, we learned the operating
characteristic under load condition of three-phase salient pole synchronous
generator. In this experiment it shows the characteristic of under load
conditions, first we used the resistive load and we opened the 0-4 switch that
represents the load to get the reference value of Eo that equal to 220 volts
and the If is 0.27 amp. Next we switch off the switches to get the maximum
value of Vo that equals to 243 volts and the If is equal to 0. As we open the
switch from 0 to 6 we get the value of 192 volts and If IS 0.72 amp and the
power factor is 1 and the power is 239.40 watts. Next condition is the
resistive load and inductive load also we done the reference guide that 0-4
switch is on, after that we open the switch from 0 to 6 and we got the value of
Eo is equal to 189 and the Io is 0.95 and the power factor is 0.8 and the
power is 248.79. Lastly condition is the resistive load and capacitive load
also we done the reference guide that 0-4 switch is on, after that we open the
switch from 0 to 6 and we got the value of Eo is equal to 190 and the Io is
0.99 and the power factor is 0.72 and the power is 234.56. As we concluded
on resistive load the power factor is unity and when inductive the power
factor is lagging and the capacitive is leading.
