Hawassa University Institute of Technology Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering

Industrial Engineering Department, System Modelling and Simulation Final Exam for 4 th
Year 1st Semester Students.
Time allowed: 3hrs. Max. Mark: 40% Date: 08/03/2024
FULL NAME:_______________________________________ID:___________________
Instruction 1: Attempt the following questions and describe each point clearly and neatly

1. Consider a packaging/warehousing process with the following steps:-

i. The product is filled and sealed.
ii. Sealed units are placed into boxes and stickers are placed on the boxes.
iii. Boxes are transported to the warehouse to fulfill customer demand.
These steps can be combined into a single processing time and this problem is also known as a
production/inventory problem, as depicted in the system schematic of figure below.

a. List the main components of the system (3pts)

b. What are the transactions and events of the system, in view of figure above? (3pts)
c. Which performance measures might be of interest to customers? (3pts)
d. Which performance measures might be of interest to owners? (3pts)
e. What data would you collect for modeling and why? (3pts)
2. Assume you are required to determine the best theoretical distribution of input data for your
arrival time or service of customer using arena input analyzer. List and discuss tests
required for goodness of fit for your distributions (5pts).
3. A model of any kind (physical, analytical, simulation, etc.) is a simplified representation of
some system under study, and as such, a model would rarely capture precisely system
characteristics. Consequently, a model cannot always be expected to predict accurately
system performance. Therefore developers need to verify and validate their model. Discuss
the following points of model verification and validation.
a. What does it mean by verification and techniques of verification (3pts)

b. What does it mean by validation and techniques of validation (3pts)

c. The difference between verification and validation (2pts)

Instruction 2: Work Out

4. Assume that you need to model and simulate a single server pharmacy system in which
customers are arrives at this pharmacy randomly 1 to 6 minutes. The service time of each
customer varies from 1 to 4 minutes. Distribution of time between arrivals, service time
and random numbers assignments for both time between arrival and service times are given
in the tables below respectively.

Distribution of time between arrival and random number assigned

Arrival time Probability Cumulative probability Random number assigned
1 0.167 0.167 001-167
2 0.167 0.333 168-333
3 0.167 0.500 334-500
4 0.167 0.667 501-667
5 0.167 0.833 668-833
6 0.167 1.000 884-1000

Distribution of service time and random number assigned

service time Probability Cumulative probability Random number assigned
1 0.25 0.25 01-25
2 0.25 0.50 26-50
3 0.25 0.75 51-75
4 0.25 1.00 76-100

Customer Random number for inter arrival times Random number for service time
1 200 27
2 350 20
3 603 78
4 800 23
5 300 76
6 250 55
7 700 29
8 150 99
9 470 74
10 145 5
Using manual simulation table calculate the following system performance metrics.
a. The average waiting time for a customer (3pts)
b. The probability that a customer has to wait in the queue (3pts)
c. The fraction of idle time of the server (3pts)
d. The average service time a customer spent (3pts)
