[1] Tommy, aged 15, is studying music and loves composing

Tommy playing the trumpet
his own. It’s a real change from a few years ago when he had
discipline problems and was excluded from school several times.
The Drum Works project has given him space for his creativity and
helped him stay out of trouble. Tommy attends the Warren School,
where the Drum Works project has been running for the last three
years. He’s been involved in the project since he was 12. “I was a
real troublemaker,” says Tommy. “But then I got invited to Drum
Works, and it really helped me.”
[2] There are about 100 students in the Drum Works project. They attend their sessions at lunchtime and
play music in groups of 20. Each person plays his own preferable instrument. Instead of playing an already
prepared music, the young people create their own collaboratively, based on the styles they enjoy.
[3] Tommy now plays the drums even outside the music sessions. “I used to play the trumpet, but I got
bored of it, now I play the drums,” he says. “The project members are really helpful. If you can’t play well,
they are not going to judge you for the mistakes; they’ll teach you till you know how to do it. I picked music
from the school project, and now I can write my own music. Drum Works has helped me get more inspiring
ideas.”

Tommy playing the drums

[4] Susie, a music teacher, remembers the change she saw in
Tommy. “His behavior changed gradually. Tommy’s confidence
improved as he realized that he’s talented at something,” she says.
“His patience and concentration improved too as he was trying to
perfect his skills. He spent his lunchtimes in the music department
practicing his best tunes. He enjoyed coming to school”. His mum
believes that drumming has transformed Tommy. “Without it I’m not
sure if he would even still be in school,” she says.
[5] Tommy enjoyed making progress. He learnt that the only way
to improve is to make mistakes and that it’s ok to make them. “Managing to go out and play in front of many
people is my proudest moment. When I first started drumming, I had to play in front of the class and I was so
scared! Now I’m confident with it. The music project has made of me a different person”.

[1] Leaving home to study or work in another country can

be a difficult experience. Such an experience is often referred to as
culture shock. This phenomenon describes the impact of moving
from a familiar culture to one that is unfamiliar.

[2] Karan Arora, an Indian student who recently landed in

New York, tells his experience with American food. “I felt so sad
when I first landed in the US and was served junk food
everywhere. Everything here was tasteless. I really missed my
homemade food,” he says.

[3] Jean, an American student in Japan, also experienced culture shock. When asked about what
might cause culture shock, she says: “From what I’ve experienced personally, I think that the language
barrier is often the biggest challenge. I was very frustrated even before I arrived in Tokyo. I felt very
embarrassed when the Japanese lady next to me wanted to start a conversation but I couldn’t say even a
single word. As soon as I settled myself in Tokyo, I started Japanese classes.”

[4] Allison talks about a particular challenge he faced with the food and meals in Spain. “For those
unfamiliar with Spanish cuisine, expect too much meat. Moreover, in England we usually have dinner at 6
p.m., but in Spain we ate at 10 p.m.,” says Allison. “It was also annoying for me to share lunch with many
people. Sometimes, I just wanted to stay in my room and have a pizza alone, not the pizza they have in
Spain,” adds Allison with frustration.

[5] Yoko, a Japanese student in London, says that she found it

extremely difficult to adjust to the British life. “In my first week in
London, my train was canceled without notice, a normal thing for a
Londoner. Poor and frustrating services extend to banks. In Japan, good
service and organization are expected as a matter of course,” she
explains. “To overcome culture shock people should read as much as
possible ahead of time about the country where they will be staying”,
she adds.
[6] Although culture shock seems to be an unpleasant experience,
it definitely opens your eyes not only to a different culture but also to
your own. What we should bear in mind is that the customs and ways of
life of the others aren’t wrong, they’re just different.

Laura is an Australian university student. On her 18th birthday, her father decided to do something
special for her. She is telling her story.

[1] When my father asked me about what I wanted for my

18th birthday, my answer was “I want to do voluntary work in
Nepal”. I heard about travel volunteering from some of my
classmates who already served global communities while having
the pleasure to see different places. They all agreed that
volunteering abroad allows people to have an authentic trip
while serving another community.
[2] For my 18th birthday, I decided to do something for the
people in Nepal. After consulting different volunteering
websites, I opted to work at the children’s Daycare Center in
Chitwan, not far from Kathmandu. Flying from my hometown,
Sydney, to Kathmandu was both scary and exciting as I had
never been to Nepal before.
[3] At the airport, I was greeted by my guide Phil. He accompanied me for a quick visit of the
streets of Kathmandu. The first night in the hotel was a real shocker and an eye-opener for me, having
seen kids no more than 10 years old living on the street. In the morning, I took a bus to Chitwan where I
was welcomed by Dilu and Binu, my generous homestay Dad and Mom. They immediately made me feel
at home.
[4] During the first week, I worked at the children’s
Daycare Center. Working with the kids was an absolute delight:
from playing with them to teaching them the alphabet and some
English words; it was all just an amazing experience. My
homestay family organized my best 18th birthday party following
local rituals; several natives of Chitwan danced and sang
memorable traditional chants. For my second week, I decided to
travel and see some of the rest of the country. Dilu took me to
visit some of the most amazing places I have ever seen. We also
went on elephant safaris and had long walks through the jungle.

[5] Although it was a short stay, my volunteering experience has offered me some of the most
memorable moments of my travelling life and has helped me to grow as a person. Being outside my
normal routine and working with people from other cultures challenged me to open my mind.
[6] Choosing a travel volunteering experience can be challenging. Yet, I recommend it to anyone
who wants to see the world while doing some good for another community. International volunteering
serves to strengthen communities and support them to face challenges.

[1] When she was born prematurely, Maryamah
was just 1.2 kilograms. Now, she is still
underweight. She’s one of hundreds of premature
babies born in Indonesia benefiting from the work of
professor Koestor who is building incubators and
lending them for free to low-income families.

[2] The World Health Organization (WHO) says

that premature birth complications are the main
cause of death among children under five. Babies
who are born early need incubators to keep them
warm and protect them from infections. But getting
access to these life-saving devices is a huge
challenge for millions of people living in poverty in infant incubator
Indonesia.

[3] Koestor, who works at the University of Indonesia, started his lending scheme in 2012 using his
technical expertise to build ultra-light, portable incubators. His interest in incubators began when he fixed
one of the devices for a pediatrician, and then learnt how to construct them himself. To fund his scheme, he
looked for individuals willing to donate about $260 each, the cost of making one incubator.

[4] People requiring an incubator send a text message to a

special number and a volunteer brings one for them. The
service began in the capital Jakarta, and has now expanded to
an additional 48 cities and will be extended to 300 cities.
Koestor has so far built 180 incubators that have helped about
1500 babies. “Our success ratio is 100 percent; the 1500 babies
are all alive and healthy,” he said.

[5] The scheme has proved invaluable for Maryamah and

her parents. Maryamah’s mother underwent a caesarean section
in February when she was almost eight months pregnant due to
high blood pressure. After seven weeks, when the baby was
still 1.5 kilos, doctors said Maryamah could no longer stay in
the hospital as her condition had stabilized. “We were slowly recovering from the shock of having a
premature baby, but then we had another problem: how to take care of her at home,” the father said.

[6] After asking around, the father found about the incubator lending service from a friend. “I sent a
text message and the response was very fast. After a few minutes the operator got in touch with me and
said that the incubator can be picked up as soon as the baby is at home,” he said. Maryamah now weighs
2.4 kilograms and although she still spends a lot of time in the incubator, her parents now feel safe taking
her out and playing with her.

[1] Najat Belkacem was born on October 4th,

1977, in a farmhouse in Bni Chiker, a village near
Nador. Her father, Ahmed, had emigrated to France
before she was born. She lived with her grandfather
and she still remembers gathering water and helping
him with the farm work.
[2] When Najat was five, her father found a
permanent job and sent for his wife and daughters to
join him in 1982. Najat grew up in the suburbs
of Amiens, France. The little girl felt the shock of
the new culture. She didn’t speak a word of French.
“Leaving your country, your roots, can be painful. Najat Belkacem at school

My father had already found his place, but for us, it

was really hard,” she says.
[3] Her father set strict rules: she was forbidden to hang out with friends or to go out to cafés
before the age of eighteen. As a result, Najat devoted all her time and energy to her studies. By the end of
her first year, she could read and speak French fluently.

[4] She received French citizenship shortly before

joining university as a law student. It was there that she
discovered the prestigious Paris Institute of Political Studies.
She took the entrance exam and passed. At the institute library,
she met Boris Vallaud whom she married later. The couple has
followed similar paths into government. “It’s very nice to have
a husband who moves in the same world as I do,” she says.

[5] In March 2008, she was elected ‘Conseillère

Générale’ of the Rhône department. On May 16th, 2012, she
was appointed to French President François Hollande’s cabinet
as Minister of Women’s Rights and Spokesperson for the
th
government. On August 25 , 2014, she became the first woman to be appointed Minister of Education
and Research in France.
[6] Najat has proved that there are no boundaries to what you can achieve if you work hard. Her
story reminds us that immigrants are valuable human capital. If we believe in them and invest in them
with the right education, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

[1] Hanan Al Hroub grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp near

Bethlehem. She is now a teacher of refugee children herself. She
specialises in supporting children who have suffered from violence. In
2016, she was awarded the Global Teacher Prize for her outstanding
contribution to the teaching profession. The finalists for the Global Teacher
Prize included teachers from India, Kenya, Finland and the United States.
The award was announced at an awards ceremony in Dubai, with a video
message of congratulations sent by Prince William. He spoke of the great
responsibility of teachers and how they could influence and shape a young
person's life for the better.

[2] Pope Francis announced via a video conference that Hanan had won the $1 million teaching
award. “I would like to congratulate the teacher Hanan Al Hroub for winning this prestigious prize because
of the importance that she gave to the role of play in a child's education. A child has the right to play. Part of
education is to teach children how to play because they learn how to be social through games as well as learn
the joy of life,” Francis said.

[3] Hanan became a teacher after her children and husband were
shot at on their way home from school. This incident had a negative
impact on her children’s behaviour and personality. She was left alone
to support them. With no help from the educational authorities, she
started inventing games at home and inviting the neighbours’ children
to participate. Gradually, the children's behaviour and grades began to
improve. Now she teaches using play at school to help pupils reject
Hanan working with kids violence and tension. In her speech at the ceremony, she told the
audience that teachers could change the world.

[4] “I ’m proud to be a Palestinian female teacher standing on this stage. I accept this as a win for all
teachers in general and Palestinian teachers in particular. I tell all teachers that our job is humane and its
goals are noble. We must teach our children that our only weapon is knowledge and education," she said
after receiving the award. She says she will spend the prize money on supporting her students by creating
scholarships to encourage excellent ones to be teachers.

[5] The award was created by the Varkey Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Dubai-
based education entrepreneur Sunny Varkey. It aims at improving the standards of education for
underprivileged children throughout the world. “I hope that this teacher's story would inspire those looking
to enter the teaching profession”.

[1] Dinara is 14 years old and lives in a

park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For the last two
decades, there has been a huge reduction in the
number of street children in Rio. But Dinara is part
of a group of about 60 children who still survive on
the streets.
[2] “We sleep in a park. In the evening, we
go inside the park before it closes. We feel safe
there. Sometimes, we fight because we don’t have
enough blankets or food, but the group is a family
and if an outsider attacks us, we are united and we
will protect each other,” she said.
[3] During the day, these street children are helped by a drop-in centre run by a foundation in Rio
called AMAR. The foundation has volunteers who cater for the needs of street children. “At AMAR, I
can eat, wash my clothes, play football and basketball with the other kids, and I use the computer for
facebook,” Dinara said.
[4] Her mother, Gabriela, lived on the streets as a child too. After giving birth to Dinara, she was
able to buy a house, but the building collapsed when Dinara was nine. This incident left Dinara and her
brothers without a mother to take care of them. They had no other option but to seek food and shelter on
the streets.
[5] On the streets of Rio de Janeiro, the children face great dangers and get little sympathy from
society. “Society does not look well on us. We are discriminated against and people are scared of us. If
only they would help us as there are children with stories much worse than mine,” said Dinara.
[6] Though she lives on the street, Dinara
manages to go to school thanks to her elder brother.
He ensures that she attends classes regularly.
However, she will never forget the sad story of her
younger brother Dennis, who was murdered in front
of her in a drug affair.

[7] There is no doubt that Dinara has

experienced hardships in her childhood, yet she
retains a smile and an extraordinary energy in
pursuing her dreams. “I’m receiving social support,
and AMAR foundation is helping me to join a
basketball team. I believe that one day I will have a
job, a family and a house,” she said.

[1] Keesee went to Haiti 20 years ago as a member of a

group of American volunteers. The group planned to build a clinic
and a school in Seguin, a remote village in the mountains. Keesee
was shocked when he saw how far women had to walk to get water,
and the desperate efforts they made to collect rainwater. “Someone
has to do something to help this village,” he said to himself.

[2] It rains a lot in the village and Keesee wanted to collect

rainwater and clean it so that the villagers could drink it. He decided
to invent a simple system to achieve this goal. He collected plastic
pipes and washing machine filters from garbage. Rainwater would
flow into the plastic pipes, which were fixed on the roof of every
house, and go through the filters which would make it clean, healthy
water.

[3] At first, it was not easy at all. But Keesee tried again
every time the system failed to work. The villagers thought it was just impossible to bring clean water to
each house, although they all gave a hand. But one day he saw his dream come true; the system worked
well, to the surprise of the villagers. Clean water was there for every villager to drink.

[4] “When I saw the system work for the first time, I cried
out of joy. The villagers were running with their vessels to collect
clean water,” he remembered. Felix, a woman from the village
said: “We had to spend three hours a day walking to get water,
which was often dirty and contaminated. Every drop of water was
precious to us. Now water comes to our houses. More, it is clean
water.”

[5] “The quality of water provided by this system has

greatly improved the health of the people in Seguin,” says a nurse.
“Cholera was our biggest concern, mainly after the 2010
hurricane. But we have seen fewer and fewer people coming to
our clinic with cholera or other diseases caused by contaminated
water,” she adds.

[6] “The system isn’t very complex. I just fixed pipes and filters to the roofs of the houses and
caught water that fell out from the sky,” Keesee said in a recent interview. People should not overthink
problems and look for solutions which are too complex. A simple water system which is made out of old
pipes has improved the lives of many people.

[1] Getting young people involved in politics is essential for them to understand the
system of government and become active citizens in the future. The aim of being involved in
politics is more than just getting a job with the government. It's about being in a position to
influence those who make the decisions that affect our lives.

[2] By starting at an early age, young people will have

more contacts and opportunities which will help them make a
difference later in life. Voting, for example, is an integral part of
a country’s democratic process. Learning it early will boost good
citizenship and create interest in the political and social system in
general. In elections, it does not really matter who the winner or
the loser is.

[3] As teenagers, the next step for them is to join an election campaign for a local
politician. This will allow them to see from the inside how political parties are built and how they
reach voters in remote areas. They can meet people they read about in the newspaper and see on
TV. The young person may even get an opportunity to meet those higher up in government who
come out to support the local candidate.

[4] Another way to get young people involved in

politics and social work is to encourage them to join an
organisation promoting a noble cause. One example is
Sidaction by ALCS which aims at raising people’s
awareness about the dangers of AIDS. Another example
is the national campaign for road safety to reduce
accidents and save people’s lives. These are excellent
ways to become exposed to how the government is
affected by ordinary people. It will let the young person see that a few hard-working people can
make a change and raise public awareness. While this voluntary work is not profitable
financially, it can help gain experience and offer chances to have influence on decision makers.

[5] Young people should not forget to learn to vote because it is the most important way to
be involved in politics. It is the one time when they are guaranteed to be heard although their
vote is just one among thousands. It will be considered as important as the vote of the most
influential person they know.

A TALENTED HUMOURIST

[1] Born in Casablanca on April 19, 1971, Gad Elmaleh is an actor and comedian of Moroccan-
French nationality. He speaks fluently both French and Moroccan Arabic as he was raised in a household
that gave him access to a mix of cultural influences. He was educated in Morocco, first at the Georges
Bizet School and later at Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca. In 1988, he moved to Montreal, Canada, where he
studied political sciences for a year. He also worked on radio and started writing humorous stories which
he performed in nightclubs. He soon discovered that he had a talent for entertaining people. This launched
him on a career which continues today.

[2] Gad Elmaleh has had roles in a number of films and has enjoyed success as a stand-up
comedian. His talents also include singing and voice-overs for animated films. His first cinema role was in
1996 in “Salut Cousin!”, a film by Algerian screenwriter and director Merzak Allouache. His first one-man
show, “Décalages”, based on his own life, was performed at the Palais des Glaces in 1997.

[3] Following the success of “Décalages”, Gad Elmaleh's

second one-man show “La Vie Normale” proved to be a huge
success. In 2005, Elmaleh returned to the stage with a new style in
“L’autre c’est moi”, in which he interacted with the audience and
improvised his dialogue. In 2006, he was awarded the “Chevalier
des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Minister of Culture and was
voted “The Funniest Person in France.”

[4] Gad Elmaleh performed in Montreal and Casablanca,

before taking his shows to France, Belgium and Switzerland in
2007. As part of the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal in July
2007, Elmaleh presented his latest production, “Papa est en Haut”
for the first time. In December 2007, the show made history when all tickets were sold out at L’Olympia in
Paris for seven consecutive weeks.

[5] In 2009, Elmaleh wrote, produced and acted in the film Coco which was another great success.
It was based on one of his one-man show “La Vie Normale”. In 2011, the actor had a role in Woody
Allen's Midnight in Paris and appeared in the film The Adventures of Tintin. No doubt, fans are looking
forward to future shows by the Moroccan-born actor and comedian Gad Elmaleh.

[1] My Name is Ayman, I am a 21-year-old Egyptian student from a village called Assadiya, in Egypt.
I want to share my story with you as I am currently living the happiest times in my life! This is simply
because I have just learned what "responsibility" means and I have made friends all over Egypt. I am a
volunteer in the “Step Towards Our Future” programme which is one of the activities of the Youth
Association for Population and Development (YAPD), a non-governmental organisation supported by
UNICEF, Egypt.
[2] The year 2007 marks the beginning of this fantastic phase in my life! We travelled to Cairo with
YAPD to attend a youth empowerment workshop. We learned to make field studies in order to understand
the problems of our small community. My field study took me to houses of rich and poor people. In my
village, I was touched and overwhelmed with what I have found out. I saw how the poor have compassion
for each other. You can definitely learn a lot when you get closer to your community and feel for your
people!
[3] We chose to start with an initiative that we called “Ayssin” which means moonlight. We viewed
our problems as darkness, and we wanted to get light out of this darkness. We decided to start by marking
our place, so we put large notices at the village entrance and built a fence around the Youth Centre. We also
established a social club inside the Youth Centre and turned a deserted area there into a garden and called it
Ayssin Garden for Children. We also arranged for a big medical convoy including 19 mobile clinics and a
drugstore. The convoy provides medical specialties not available in our community for skin, eye, heart and
chest diseases.
[4] For me, the most important reward after taking part in all these activities is that one feels that his
work has made a difference. I hope our ideas will reach all people in order to encourage them to volunteer
for the benefit of their community. I hope a weekly or a monthly TV programme will present our lectures,
workshops and every step we take in “Step Towards Our Future” programme. In this manner, parents will
know what their sons and daughters are doing and they will then encourage them to contribute to solving our
community problems. A UNICEF representative visited us to see the outcome of our efforts. Consequently,
people are seeing for themselves how our efforts are respected and held in high esteem.

TEXT :

[1] The number of elderly people is constantly growing in Morocco. By 2030, old people will have
made up 15% of the Moroccan population, rising from 2.5 million to 8 million. Government officials and
social activists say that actions to protect these marginalised people must intensify. Otherwise, more ageing
citizens will end up on the streets.
[2] Ba Mohamed, aged 70, once lived with a
loving family. Now, he wanders the streets of Rabat
every day, suffering from solitude and marginalisation.
He no longer receives any news from his two children,
who emigrated to France 25 years ago. After the death
of his wife, Ba Mohamed continued performing
seasonal work, until health problems prevented him
from supporting himself. Without financial resources or
help from family members, he ended up begging in the
streets.
[3] Sociologist Naïma Bichri says, "We're seeing
problems which never existed in the past. Indeed, it was
rare for elderly people to be rejected. Their families
used to take good care of them. But this habit is dying
out more and more”. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that this is not the case for all families
because many of them are still happy to look after their parents and grandparents.
[4] Hnia, in her eighties, has been living with her children since her husband died 32 years ago. She
organises her own schedule of visits to stay with her eight children, who live in different towns and cities.
"When I’m bored staying with one of them, I phone one of the others to come and collect me immediately.
Whenever I’m sick, my sons pay for my treatment. I feel spoiled even if my daughters-in-law irritate me,"
she says with a broad smile.
[5] Bichri thinks that social and economic changes have had a negative impact on social solidarity.
It is becoming more difficult for young people to continue to support their elders, even if they want to,
because of unemployment and the high cost of living. She argues that the government and civil society
should work together to find solutions to help families and provide resources.
[6] One possible solution is that families can collaborate as part of a support network. Samira
Tamiri of the ‘Together for a Better Future’ association feels that a family network could effectively help
in dealing with problems facing senior citizens. Indeed, government officials are focusing on helping
families to take care of their elderly

Latifa became a disabled person due to a serious illness that caused her paralysis in her early
childhood. When she was nineteen years old, she lived in a remote village in the Rif Mountains. As one of six
children in a poor family of a labourer, she got married at the age of 16. At that time, she was hardly able to
walk by herself. However, this marriage could not last for long. Very soon, Latifa’s husband and his parents
abandoned her, blaming her for her physical handicap. Later, her husband divorced her and got married again.
With a sense of rejection and despair, she went back to her parents’ home.
When her village was selected for a women literacy project, Latifa got in contact with the teachers in
this project. When they talked to her and to some women in the village, she immediately joined literacy classes.
This changed her life completely. Guidance, care, and affection of the teachers helped build her personality. She
emerged as a leader of girls, helping them to study and come out of their isolation for a new life.
Later on, Latifa, who had to use a wheelchair to move, joined a programme organised by the Ministry of
Youth and Sport for the benefit of the disabled. She learnt traditional embroidery in a two-month training
programme, and began earning money from making tablecloths and napkins. Latifa became the breadwinner in
her family.
Latifa took the initiative and set up an association of young boys and girls of her village. When drought
hit the village and water became scarce, she wrote letters to German non-governmental organisations asking
them for help. She cannot forget the day when a caravan of cars and trucks arrived in the village. She was
cheered by the villagers when water started to pour out of a fountain designed by a German engineer.
One could see Latifa in her struggle for social justice, leading a group of young people with a sense of
confidence in her voice and gestures. She stood up against arranged marriages in rural areas around the village
and persuaded parents to send their children to school. She still walks with difficulty, but the confidence of her
voice helps her overcome her physical handicap. For her, life has just begun. From a lonely, fragile figure, Latifa
is now a good educator and a role model. When people ask her how her life has changed, she points with a smile
of gratitude to her old classroom in the farthest corner of her village.
