[3] Jean, an American student in Japan, also experienced culture shock. When asked about what
might cause culture shock, she says: “From what I’ve experienced personally, I think that the language
barrier is often the biggest challenge. I was very frustrated even before I arrived in Tokyo. I felt very
embarrassed when the Japanese lady next to me wanted to start a conversation but I couldn’t say even a
single word. As soon as I settled myself in Tokyo, I started Japanese classes.”
[4] Allison talks about a particular challenge he faced with the food and meals in Spain. “For those
unfamiliar with Spanish cuisine, expect too much meat. Moreover, in England we usually have dinner at 6
p.m., but in Spain we ate at 10 p.m.,” says Allison. “It was also annoying for me to share lunch with many
people. Sometimes, I just wanted to stay in my room and have a pizza alone, not the pizza they have in
Spain,” adds Allison with frustration.

Laura is an Australian university student. On her 18th birthday, her father decided to do something
special for her. She is telling her story.
[5] Although it was a short stay, my volunteering experience has offered me some of the most
memorable moments of my travelling life and has helped me to grow as a person. Being outside my
normal routine and working with people from other cultures challenged me to open my mind.
[6] Choosing a travel volunteering experience can be challenging. Yet, I recommend it to anyone
who wants to see the world while doing some good for another community. International volunteering
serves to strengthen communities and support them to face challenges.

[3] Koestor, who works at the University of Indonesia, started his lending scheme in 2012 using his
technical expertise to build ultra-light, portable incubators. His interest in incubators began when he fixed
one of the devices for a pediatrician, and then learnt how to construct them himself. To fund his scheme, he
looked for individuals willing to donate about $260 each, the cost of making one incubator.
[6] After asking around, the father found about the incubator lending service from a friend. “I sent a
text message and the response was very fast. After a few minutes the operator got in touch with me and
said that the incubator can be picked up as soon as the baby is at home,” he said. Maryamah now weighs
2.4 kilograms and although she still spends a lot of time in the incubator, her parents now feel safe taking
her out and playing with her.

[2] Pope Francis announced via a video conference that Hanan had won the $1 million teaching
award. “I would like to congratulate the teacher Hanan Al Hroub for winning this prestigious prize because
of the importance that she gave to the role of play in a child's education. A child has the right to play. Part of
education is to teach children how to play because they learn how to be social through games as well as learn
the joy of life,” Francis said.
[3] Hanan became a teacher after her children and husband were
shot at on their way home from school. This incident had a negative
impact on her children’s behaviour and personality. She was left alone
to support them. With no help from the educational authorities, she
started inventing games at home and inviting the neighbours’ children
to participate. Gradually, the children's behaviour and grades began to
improve. Now she teaches using play at school to help pupils reject
Hanan working with kids violence and tension. In her speech at the ceremony, she told the
audience that teachers could change the world.
[4] “I ’m proud to be a Palestinian female teacher standing on this stage. I accept this as a win for all
teachers in general and Palestinian teachers in particular. I tell all teachers that our job is humane and its
goals are noble. We must teach our children that our only weapon is knowledge and education," she said
after receiving the award. She says she will spend the prize money on supporting her students by creating
scholarships to encourage excellent ones to be teachers.
[5] The award was created by the Varkey Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Dubai-
based education entrepreneur Sunny Varkey. It aims at improving the standards of education for
underprivileged children throughout the world. “I hope that this teacher's story would inspire those looking
to enter the teaching profession”.

[3] At first, it was not easy at all. But Keesee tried again
every time the system failed to work. The villagers thought it was just impossible to bring clean water to
each house, although they all gave a hand. But one day he saw his dream come true; the system worked
well, to the surprise of the villagers. Clean water was there for every villager to drink.
[4] “When I saw the system work for the first time, I cried
out of joy. The villagers were running with their vessels to collect
clean water,” he remembered. Felix, a woman from the village
said: “We had to spend three hours a day walking to get water,
which was often dirty and contaminated. Every drop of water was
precious to us. Now water comes to our houses. More, it is clean
water.”
[6] “The system isn’t very complex. I just fixed pipes and filters to the roofs of the houses and
caught water that fell out from the sky,” Keesee said in a recent interview. People should not overthink
problems and look for solutions which are too complex. A simple water system which is made out of old
pipes has improved the lives of many people.

[1] Getting young people involved in politics is essential for them to understand the
system of government and become active citizens in the future. The aim of being involved in
politics is more than just getting a job with the government. It's about being in a position to
influence those who make the decisions that affect our lives.
[3] As teenagers, the next step for them is to join an election campaign for a local
politician. This will allow them to see from the inside how political parties are built and how they
reach voters in remote areas. They can meet people they read about in the newspaper and see on
TV. The young person may even get an opportunity to meet those higher up in government who
come out to support the local candidate.
[5] Young people should not forget to learn to vote because it is the most important way to
be involved in politics. It is the one time when they are guaranteed to be heard although their
vote is just one among thousands. It will be considered as important as the vote of the most
influential person they know.

A TALENTED HUMOURIST
[1] Born in Casablanca on April 19, 1971, Gad Elmaleh is an actor and comedian of Moroccan-
French nationality. He speaks fluently both French and Moroccan Arabic as he was raised in a household
that gave him access to a mix of cultural influences. He was educated in Morocco, first at the Georges
Bizet School and later at Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca. In 1988, he moved to Montreal, Canada, where he
studied political sciences for a year. He also worked on radio and started writing humorous stories which
he performed in nightclubs. He soon discovered that he had a talent for entertaining people. This launched
him on a career which continues today.
[2] Gad Elmaleh has had roles in a number of films and has enjoyed success as a stand-up
comedian. His talents also include singing and voice-overs for animated films. His first cinema role was in
1996 in “Salut Cousin!”, a film by Algerian screenwriter and director Merzak Allouache. His first one-man
show, “Décalages”, based on his own life, was performed at the Palais des Glaces in 1997.
[5] In 2009, Elmaleh wrote, produced and acted in the film Coco which was another great success.
It was based on one of his one-man show “La Vie Normale”. In 2011, the actor had a role in Woody
Allen's Midnight in Paris and appeared in the film The Adventures of Tintin. No doubt, fans are looking
forward to future shows by the Moroccan-born actor and comedian Gad Elmaleh.

[1] My Name is Ayman, I am a 21-year-old Egyptian student from a village called Assadiya, in Egypt.
I want to share my story with you as I am currently living the happiest times in my life! This is simply
because I have just learned what "responsibility" means and I have made friends all over Egypt. I am a
volunteer in the “Step Towards Our Future” programme which is one of the activities of the Youth
Association for Population and Development (YAPD), a non-governmental organisation supported by
UNICEF, Egypt.
[2] The year 2007 marks the beginning of this fantastic phase in my life! We travelled to Cairo with
YAPD to attend a youth empowerment workshop. We learned to make field studies in order to understand
the problems of our small community. My field study took me to houses of rich and poor people. In my
village, I was touched and overwhelmed with what I have found out. I saw how the poor have compassion
for each other. You can definitely learn a lot when you get closer to your community and feel for your
people!
[3] We chose to start with an initiative that we called “Ayssin” which means moonlight. We viewed
our problems as darkness, and we wanted to get light out of this darkness. We decided to start by marking
our place, so we put large notices at the village entrance and built a fence around the Youth Centre. We also
established a social club inside the Youth Centre and turned a deserted area there into a garden and called it
Ayssin Garden for Children. We also arranged for a big medical convoy including 19 mobile clinics and a
drugstore. The convoy provides medical specialties not available in our community for skin, eye, heart and
chest diseases.
[4] For me, the most important reward after taking part in all these activities is that one feels that his
work has made a difference. I hope our ideas will reach all people in order to encourage them to volunteer
for the benefit of their community. I hope a weekly or a monthly TV programme will present our lectures,
workshops and every step we take in “Step Towards Our Future” programme. In this manner, parents will
know what their sons and daughters are doing and they will then encourage them to contribute to solving our
community problems. A UNICEF representative visited us to see the outcome of our efforts. Consequently,
people are seeing for themselves how our efforts are respected and held in high esteem.

TEXT :
[1] The number of elderly people is constantly growing in Morocco. By 2030, old people will have
made up 15% of the Moroccan population, rising from 2.5 million to 8 million. Government officials and
social activists say that actions to protect these marginalised people must intensify. Otherwise, more ageing
citizens will end up on the streets.
[2] Ba Mohamed, aged 70, once lived with a
loving family. Now, he wanders the streets of Rabat
every day, suffering from solitude and marginalisation.
He no longer receives any news from his two children,
who emigrated to France 25 years ago. After the death
of his wife, Ba Mohamed continued performing
seasonal work, until health problems prevented him
from supporting himself. Without financial resources or
help from family members, he ended up begging in the
streets.
[3] Sociologist Naïma Bichri says, "We're seeing
problems which never existed in the past. Indeed, it was
rare for elderly people to be rejected. Their families
used to take good care of them. But this habit is dying
out more and more”. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that this is not the case for all families
because many of them are still happy to look after their parents and grandparents.
[4] Hnia, in her eighties, has been living with her children since her husband died 32 years ago. She
organises her own schedule of visits to stay with her eight children, who live in different towns and cities.
"When I’m bored staying with one of them, I phone one of the others to come and collect me immediately.
Whenever I’m sick, my sons pay for my treatment. I feel spoiled even if my daughters-in-law irritate me,"
she says with a broad smile.
[5] Bichri thinks that social and economic changes have had a negative impact on social solidarity.
It is becoming more difficult for young people to continue to support their elders, even if they want to,
because of unemployment and the high cost of living. She argues that the government and civil society
should work together to find solutions to help families and provide resources.
[6] One possible solution is that families can collaborate as part of a support network. Samira
Tamiri of the ‘Together for a Better Future’ association feels that a family network could effectively help
in dealing with problems facing senior citizens. Indeed, government officials are focusing on helping
families to take care of their elderly

Dear friend,
How are you? I’m planning to visit Morocco this summer. I will probably stay there for ten
days. As I don’t know much about Morocco, I would be thankful if you could send me details
about interesting places to visit, sights to see, typical Moroccan food to try... and anything that
would make my stay enjoyable.
Thank you very much. Robert

Latifa became a disabled person due to a serious illness that caused her paralysis in her early
childhood. When she was nineteen years old, she lived in a remote village in the Rif Mountains. As one of six
children in a poor family of a labourer, she got married at the age of 16. At that time, she was hardly able to
walk by herself. However, this marriage could not last for long. Very soon, Latifa’s husband and his parents
abandoned her, blaming her for her physical handicap. Later, her husband divorced her and got married again.
With a sense of rejection and despair, she went back to her parents’ home.
When her village was selected for a women literacy project, Latifa got in contact with the teachers in
this project. When they talked to her and to some women in the village, she immediately joined literacy classes.
This changed her life completely. Guidance, care, and affection of the teachers helped build her personality. She
emerged as a leader of girls, helping them to study and come out of their isolation for a new life.
Later on, Latifa, who had to use a wheelchair to move, joined a programme organised by the Ministry of
Youth and Sport for the benefit of the disabled. She learnt traditional embroidery in a two-month training
programme, and began earning money from making tablecloths and napkins. Latifa became the breadwinner in
her family.
Latifa took the initiative and set up an association of young boys and girls of her village. When drought
hit the village and water became scarce, she wrote letters to German non-governmental organisations asking
them for help. She cannot forget the day when a caravan of cars and trucks arrived in the village. She was
cheered by the villagers when water started to pour out of a fountain designed by a German engineer.
One could see Latifa in her struggle for social justice, leading a group of young people with a sense of
confidence in her voice and gestures. She stood up against arranged marriages in rural areas around the village
and persuaded parents to send their children to school. She still walks with difficulty, but the confidence of her
voice helps her overcome her physical handicap. For her, life has just begun. From a lonely, fragile figure, Latifa
is now a good educator and a role model. When people ask her how her life has changed, she points with a smile
of gratitude to her old classroom in the farthest corner of her village.
