DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN

QUARTILES OF GROUPED DATA

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the student must be able to:
a. Determine the use of a Quartile formula for Group Data
b. Calculate the quartile in Grouped Data
c. Develop perseverance in finding the Quartile of Data

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. TOPIC : Quartile of Grouped Data
B. REFERENEC: Second Edition Next Century Mathematics, page 471- 477
C. MATERIALS: chalk board, calculator, visual aids
D. VALUES INTEGRATION: Develop critical thinking, speed and accuracy, cooperation
E. STRATEGY / METHOD USE : Collaboration Learning, interactive method and discovery method

III. PROCEDURE:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activity
- Greetings
*Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am!

- Prayer
* Everybody stand and let us pray.
(Students pick up the

scattered papers and arrange
*Before you take your seat , please pick up
those scattered papers under your chair. their chairs.)
- You may take your sits. Thank you Ma’am!

- Checking of Attendance
* Class secretary please take note those who (Checking of attendance)
are absent today.

- Review/ Recall the past lesson:

*What is our topic yesterday? Our topic yesterday is all
about the Quartile of
Ungrouped data ma’am.
B. Motivation

GROUP YOURSELF
* Your are going to play Group Yourself. I will say
any numbers and all you need to do is to group yourself.
Is that clear class? Yes ma’am.

* Group yourself into 12

* Group yourself into 9
* Group yourself into 6 The students will group their
selves according to the
*We already have a winner. Let’s give them a good job number.
clap!

*What do you think is the secret why we have a Each of us shows cooperation
successful activity? and teamwork ma’am.
*Very good! The product of cooperation and
teamwork may lead to positive outcome.
C. Analysis:

Based on your activity our topic for today is all about

Quartile for Grouped Data.

Before we start with our discussion, let me present to

you first our learning objectives:
1. Determine the use of a Quartiles formula
for Group Data
2. Calculate the quartiles in Grouped Data
3. Develop perseverance in finding the
Quartiles of Data

Now let’s proceed to our lesson.

D. Abstraction :

To determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quartile for group

data, use the formula:
kN
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i
fQK

Where:
Qk = the quartile being asked, k is for Q1, 2 for Q2 and
3 for Q3
LB = lower boundary for the Q. class
Cfb = cumulative frequency of the class below the Q.
class
fQK= frequency of the Q. class
i = size of class interval
N = total frequency

Calculate the Q1, Q2, Q3 of the scores of 50 learners in

Mathematics quiz.

Class Frequenc Lower Less than

Interval y Boundary Cumulative
(scores) (f) (LB) Frequency
(<cf)
46 - 50 4 45.5 50
41 - 45 8 40.5 46
36 - 40 11 35.5 38
31 - 35 9 30.5 27
26 - 30 12 25.5 18
21 - 25 6 20.5 6
i=5 N = 50

Let’s find Q1
Solve for Q1 Class:
kN Solution:
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i
fQK kN 1(50)

LB = 25.5
Cfb = 6
fQK= 12
i=5
N = 50

Compute the Q1 using the

formula:
kN
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i
fQK
12.5 −6
Q 1=25.5+¿ [ ]5

Q 1=25.5+¿ [0.54] 5
Q1 = 25.5 + 2.7
Q1 = 28.21

Let’s find Q2
Solve for Q2 Class:
kN Solution:
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i kN 2(50)
fQK =

LB = 30.5
Cfb = 18
fQK= 9
i=5
N = 50

Compute the Q2 using the

formula:
kN
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i
fQK

Q 2=30.5+¿ [0.78] 5
Q2 = 30.5 + 3.9
Q2 = 34.4

Let’s find Q3
Solve for Q3 Class:
kN
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i
fQK

Solution:

kN 3(50)

kN
= 37.5
4
LB = 35.5
Cfb = 27
fQK= 11
i=5
N = 50

Compute the Q3 using the

formula:
kN
−cfb
Qk=LB+¿ 4
[ ]i
fQK
37.5 −27
Q 3=35.5+ ¿ [ ]5
11
10.5
Q 3=35.5+ ¿ [ ]5

Q 3=35.5+ ¿ [0.95] 5
Q3 = 35.5 + 4.75
Q3 = 40.25

i=5 N = 38

IV. Evaluation:
Direction: Find the Quartile of the data set.

The ages of 48 members of faculty in a school are shown below. Complete the table, then solve for Q1, Q2,
and Q3.
Ages Frequency Lower Boundary Less than Cumulative
