Common Electrical Symbol

Electrical symbols are used to simplify the drafting and to understand the
drawing. Electrical symbols are standardized throughout the industry. The
addition of a line, dot, shading, letters, and numbers gives a specific
meaning to a symbol. In order to achieve the ability to interpret the drawings
and their related symbol meanings, we must learn the basic form of various
symbols. Electrical symbols are required to do the electrical drawing and
without the help of electrical symbols, we won’t be able to do the electrical
drawing. Electrical circuits are represented by electrical drawings. Symbols
and number combinations are used to represent electrical circuits. Electrical
drawings can be used to convey information about a wide range of details
such as Electrical wiring, pneumatic or hydraulic layouts, location of the
equipment, and details of the equipment. By using electrical drawings we
would be able to locate the equipment.
Why do we need electrical symbols?
Electrical symbols can be used to represent various electrical equipment. In
an electrical diagram, electrical equipment is represented with the help of
electric symbols. Electrical drawings are usually drawn in a style called
ladder diagram and another form of drawing is a wiring diagram. Electrical
wiring diagrams use single lines from each device exactly as it would be
wired. Electronic schematic uses symbols for each component found in an
electrical circuit. Mostly electrical diagrams are multi-sheet drawings that
show the wiring of the electrical devices related to the main control panel.
Mostly electrical diagrams are drawn as a ladder diagram. Electrical
diagrams are drawn between vertical lines or ladder all devices are shown
between the lines and they are referred to as single-line diagrams. Control
such as relays and devices are drawn on the right side. Control devices and
switches are placed between controlled devices and the left vertical line.
Overloads and other circuit breaking devices are connected to the right of
the controlled device.

Electrical Safety Signs & Labels

Electricity is a vital part of any modern day facility, but unintentional
contact can have deadly consequences. That's why it's so important for
electrical safety signs to be posted wherever an electrical hazard is present.
Not only does this protect people from shocks, but it also helps avoid costly

7
damage to equipment and infrastructure. ComplianceSigns.com has the
electrical signage and labels you need for batteries, static and grounding,
high voltage and more.
Electrical safety is important for everyone, whether you work in direct
contact with electricity or simply encounter electrical appliances at work or
home. A large part of being safe around electricity understands common
electrical safety symbols.
Take a look at our useful guide to find out more:
 PAT Labels
The following labels can be found on appliances that have undergone
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). They advise whether an appliance is safe
or unsafe to use, and may be circular or rectangular. The green ‘passed’ PAT
label features the test date and sometimes the name of the person who
carried out the test, as well as the date of the next test. Any equipment with
a red ‘failed’ PAT label should be removed from use immediately.

You may also see other labels, similar to the red and green PAT labels,
which identify whether equipment, appliances and instruments have been
checked and are safe to use:

 Electrical Hazard Warning Signs

Electrical safety symbols are stylized with bold backgrounds and electrical
safety symbols to warn people that serious injuries can occur from burn,
electric shocks, and hazards. Many electrical accidents happen globally, but
with proper placement, these tragedies can be prevented. Electrical safety
signs and electrical safety symbols are imperative in warning people that
electrical hazards are probable while working and also remind them to take
the necessary steps to stay safe.

8
These electrical safety symbols can be found around workplaces –
particularly construction sites, factories and farms where the use of high-
voltage electrical equipment or cables is common – as well as in any building
or location where electricity may pose a danger. The text and color of the
signs may vary, but the pictograms are universal. They are used to warn you
of the potential electrical hazards in the area and must not be ignored.
Examples include:

Safety Alert
(Potential personal Injury Hazards)

Prohibition

9
Caution: It indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which if not avoided could result serious
injury.

Danger: It indicates an imminently hazardous

situation which if not avoided may result in serious
injury or death.

Wear Eye Protection

Warning: It indicates a potentially hazardous

situation which, if not avoided could result serious
injury or death.

Common Electrical Safety Symbols

The common symbol for electricity is a lightning bolt.
Electrical Safety Symbols - Voltage or
Shock HazardSymbol.This symbol can be
identified by using a bolt or a bolt through a
hand, which lets people know that injury or
death can occur from nearby high-voltage
electrical equipment. It is also

Electrical Safety Symbols - Static Hazards

If you see a lightning bolt on the bottom of a
shoe, then you know that there is a danger of
an explosion occurring from static electricity.

10
Electrical Safety Symbols - Buried Cable
SymbolA bolt with an arrow pointed
downward is used to identify buried cable signs.

Electrical Safety Symbols - Danger/Safety

(Universal) A triangle with an enclosed
exclamation point is the universal symbol for
danger and sometimes safety as well.

Where Can I Find Electrical Safety Symbols?

The aforementioned electrical safety symbols can be found in many different
places.

Electrical Safety Symbols - Restricted

AreasProhibition signs are used in areas to
prevent people from walking into a danger
zone. These signs are usually found in high-
voltage areas such as substations or areas
where high-voltage electricity is used.

Electrical Safety Symbols - Electrical

DevicesAppliances, switches, wire boxes and
other electrical devices are often marked with
an electrical safety sign, which warns users of
what dangers could occur during use.

Chemicals Communication
Alongside electrical warning, signs and symbols come
hazardous chemicals pictograms. Every symbol has a
black image on a white background, with a red border
edge. There are nine different chemical hazard
classifications and they are…

11
Health: head and shoulders within the sign warning of respiratory,
reproductive, and organ toxicity. And cancer-causing potential

Flame: an internal flame indicates the possibility of self-

heating, emission of flammable gases, and organic
peroxides

Flame over Circle: this signal warns of oxidisers

Gas: a gas cylinder pictogram signals gas under

pressure

Exploding bomb: an image that warns of explosives, self-

reactives, and organic peroxides

Exclamation Mark: this indicates the possibility of

skin and eye irritants, harmful toxicity, respiratory
issues, and a hazard to the ozone layer

12
Corrosion: an image of test tubes pouring liquid indicates
danger of burns, eye damage, and metal corrosion

Environmental: aquatic toxicity is detailed as a fish

coming out of the water with a background tree

Skull and Crossbones: this is a major warning of acute

toxicity which could be fatal

3. People should make sure that signage is used in the most appropriate
and effective way, eg by not placing signboards with different
messages close together.
4. Fire safety signs must be provided to a specific standard and be
maintained where necessary to comply with fire safety legislation and
local fire risk assessments.
5. Safety signs can also be seen in several community areas such as
