Roman numerals

The numerals formed by using the digits 0,1,2,3…9 are known as


Hindu-Arabic numerals or International numerals. But the symbols
used by the Romans are called Roman numerals .

They used 7 symbols to write numbers . The symbols are ,

I , V , X , L , C , D and M

The value of each of these symbols is given below:

Rules for writing Roman numerals

a) Numerals I and X can be repeated to form a number.Repetition of these


symbols means addition.These symbols cannot be repeated more than three
times.

Eg: III = 1+1+1 = 3

XXX = 10 +10+10 = 30

b) When smaller numeral is on the left of a greater numeral, we


subtract the smaller from the greater.

Eg : IV = 5 – 1 = 4

IX = 10 – 1 = 9

c) When smaller numeral is on the right of a greater numeral, wecan add


the smaller one to the greater one.

Eg : VI = 5 + 1 = 6
XI = 10 + 1= 11
Note:
1) Romans had no symbol for zero.
2) Symbol V is never repeated.
