3. Hazards Identification
Effects of Exposure / Symptoms:
Phorate has a very high acute toxicity to humans, fish and wildlife. It is a cholinesterase
inhibitor. Symptoms include headache, tightness of chest, nausea or vomiting,
abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, convulsions. Absorption through the skin may have the
same effects.

4. First Aid Measures


Inhalation: Remove the person to fresh air area and atropine powder or tablet may be
given.
Skin: Remove the contaminated clothes and wash the affected area with plenty of water
and soap. The affected area may be decontaminated with 5-10% soln. of ammonia or

2-5% soln. of chloramine.


Eyes: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 mins.
Ingestion: Induce vomiting. Give half a glass of a 2% NallCO, soln. with 2-3 tablespoonful’s
triturated activated charcoal to drink.

6. Accidental Release Measures


Fire Extinguishing Media:
Keep containers cool by spraying water, if exposed to heat or flame.
Unusual Hazards Shock can shatter containers, releasing the contents. When heated to
decomposition, toxic fumes of sulfur oxides, phosphorus oxides, and nitrogen oxides are
emitted.

7. Handling And Storage


Phorate and its formulations are used as insecticide-nematicide. Certain oxidation
products of phorate are found to be more toxic than phorate itself. Phorate has some
potential to reach through soil and contaminate ground water. Phorate is highly toxic
to both cold and warm water fish.
Antidotes/Dosage: Atropine sulphate (powder or tablet); 0.15% to 1% atropine
sulphate for instilling in the eyes; Atropine sulphate for injection; 2-PAM, TMB-4,
Toxogonin.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
