The Cracked Pot ..
The results are in! After months of receiving some awesome pictures and bios, we found some
winners for our 200 Model Search. The task was not an easy one. Weve been looking for two people
to represent us. They had to possess not only great looks and a
great physique, but also live the ftness lifestyle and teach oth-
ers about that lifestyle. There are so many individuals out there
who ft that bill. So, choosing two was diffcult.
The frst place winners will be featured on our cover, and
we will also feature some of the runners up in the mag. I want
to thank everyone who entered. If you did not win this time,
we will be starting our 2007 search next month, so please try

n elderly Chinese woman had two large
pots, each hung on the ends of a pole
which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other
pot was perfect and always delivered a full por-
tion of water.
At the end of the long walks from the stream to
the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the
woman bringing home only one and a half pots of
water.
Of course , the perfect pot
was proud of its accom-
plishments.
But the poor cracked pot
was ashamed of its own
imperfection, and miser-
able that it could only do
half of what it had been
made to do.
After two years of what
it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the
woman one day by the stream
I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in
my side causes water to leak out all the way back
to your house.
The old woman smiled, Did you notice that
Blessed are the fexible, for they shall
not be bent out of shape.
there are fowers on your side of the path, but not
on the other pots side?
Thats because I have always known about your
faw, so I planted fower seeds on your side of
the path, and every day while we walk back, you
water them.
For two years I have been able to pick these
beautiful fowers to decorate the table. Without
you being just the way you are, there would not
be this beauty to grace the house.
Each of us has our own unique faw.
But its the cracks and faws we each
have that make our lives together so
very interesting and rewarding.
Youve just got to take each person
for what they are and look for the
good in them. Remember to appreci-
ate all the different people in your
life!
There is a lot of good out there.
There is a lot of good in you! Dont be afraid of
your faws. Acknowledge them, and you too can
be the cause of beauty. Know that in our weak-
ness we fnd our strength. Every day we look in
the mirror, we can wonder what fowers well un-
knowingly be watering that day.

Many people are under the
impression that if they work
with weights somehow the
fat will magically disappear. Unfortunately,
this isnt true. You work a muscle to be taut,
sinewy, and hard, but if there is a layer of
fat covering the muscle, nobody sees it.
Thats why proper nutrition coupled with
exercise is really the best defense for los-
ing fat weight.
Training buttocks is not gender specifc,
therefore men interested in shaping their
glutes will beneft from these suggestions
as well. Some things to consider:
1. Your genetics. This is out of our control
and the number one factor in determining
your shape. Therefore its important to
accept your body type and be at peace
with its imperfections. Certainly you can
always improve on what you have, but if
youre an endomorph looking to be an
ectomorph, youve set yourself up to be
continually disappointed and dissatisfed.
Learn to be at peace with your body type.
(Note: This is easier said than done but far
from impossible.)
2. One fact that is true for everyone: You
have to begin where you are. In other
words, if youve been inactive for a greater
part of your life and have piled on twenty,
thirty, or forty pounds it will take you lon-
ger to achieve your results. Rome wasnt
built in a day and neither can you expect to
lose massive amounts of weight acquired
over several years in a three or four month
period. Be realistic but stay optimistic.
3. Eating habits. Take notice of what you
eat, how much, and how often. Portion
control cannot be overemphasized. The
bottom line is calories in, verses calories
used. What you dont use, gets stored as
fat.
4. Exercise history. Do you have one?
Are you the type to start gung ho in the
beginning only to fzzle out after a couple
of weeks? Or are you someone who will
exercise fairly regularly with several week
layoffs in between? Being consistent with
your exercise is the best way to keep your
weight in check. Understanding why you
suddenly stop exercising or why your
exercise is intermittent will be the key
to discovering what will be successful
for you.
Gluteal Muscles
The three muscles of the gluteal region are
the gluteus maximus, which extends and
rotates the thigh laterally, the gluteus me-
dius and gluteus minimus which abducts
and rotates the thigh medially. Strong
glutes are important for power/explosive
moves required in certain sports such as
track and feld, basketball, gymnastics, and
any other sport where explosive movement
is important. They also help with everyday
activities like walking, climbing stairs, lift-
ing, and getting out of chairs. Now, lets
get to exercises that work your gluteus to
the maximus!
Aerobic activity
For busy people se-
lect an activity that
works the gluteal
muscles and burns
calories at the same
time. Walking up-
hill, climbing stairs,
and inline skating
are all excellent ac-
tivities to accom-
plish this goal. Using the
stairstepper is also a good workout for the
buttocks, however excessive amounts of
time on this machine may result in a condi-
tion known as StairMaster Butt, which
denotes a too muscular rear end.
TARGET EXERCISES
Try these exercises for shaping, lifting,
and strengthening the buttocks. You can
superset two of these together or do a series
of giant sets, or perform them individually.
Options are endless. For those of you who
have knee issues squats and deep lunges
may be exercises you will want to avoid.
Squats
Squats are my favorite lower body ex-
ercise. They recruit more leg and glute
muscles than any other exercise. You can
do them with your own body weight, hold-
ing dumbbells in your hands, using a Smith
rack, or with a barbell across the back of
your shoulders (my personal favorite).
Stand with your feet slightly wider than
shoulder width, toes subtly turned out. As
you begin your descent keep your back
straight and head up. Focusing on a point
high on the wall like the top of the mir-
ror will help you keep your head up and
back straight. Squat deep enough so that
your thighs are
parallel to the
foor before be-
ginning your as-
cent. At the bot-
tom point use the
mirror to assure
that knees stay
over the ankles
or go beyond the
toes. You want to
straighten com-
pletely upward but never lock the knees.
Unless you are a seasoned squatter its
always a good idea to have a spotter. Do
up to sets of 12-1 repetitions.
One-Legged Squats
Again these can be done using your own
body weight or with the addition of weights
or a Smith rack. Standing on one leg, ex-
tend the other leg behind you and place
the top of your foot on a bench. Keeping
the back straight and head up begin your
descent. As your squat deepens be sure
that the split between supportive leg and
non-supportive leg is wide enough so that
the knee of the non-supportive leg would
touch the foor (if it touched the foor at
all) well behind the heel of the supportive
leg. Also, make sure that the knee of the
supportive leg does not overshoot the toes.
Use the mirror to see that the knee of the
supportive leg is above the ankle (so that
its not rotating inward). Straighten upward
but never lock the knee. Do up to sets of
10-1 repetitions each leg.
Lunges
Lunges are fun (and grueling) because
there are so many different ways to do
them. You can do walking lunges, standing
forward lunges, standing reverse (back-

ward) lunges, or elevated lunges (stepping
onto a bench 2- inches above ground).
The most important factor here is balance.
Whether performing walking, standing
or elevated lunges, hold the stomach
muscles tight and keep the shoulders over
or slightly in front of the hips. The lower
back will mildly arch to accommodate this
move. Just be sure youre not over arching
or leaning too far forward. And just as in
the squats, dont allow the knee to over-
shoot the toes. Lastly, if youve chosen the
forward lunge, pushing back from the heel
more effciently activates the hamstrings
and glute/hamstring tie-ins. Do up to sets
of 12-1 repetitions each leg.
Leg Kickbacks
This is an oldie but a goody. Start out on
a mat on your hands and knees, weight
evenly distributed. Draw one knee forward
and underneath you and then extend your
leg straight behind you, lifting the foot
above body position, without overarching
your back. When extending and lifting
the leg, the work portion of the lift should
come directly from the hip area. Do not
overarch your back to elevate the leg. As
this exercise becomes easier, wear ankle
weights for more resistance. Do up to 2
sets of 1-2 repetitions each leg.
Leg Press
Most people wouldnt consider the leg
press an exercise for the buttocks but it
actually is; though the gluteal muscles
are not primary movers. To incorporate
greater activity from the gluteal region
simply place your feet higher (further up)
on the plate. Higher feet placement also
increases the activity of the hamstrings
as well. Do not fully lock the knees at the
top of this move.
Step-ups
This is not a typical exercise you would see
someone doing in a gym, because frankly,
theyre hard and tiring. If you have knee
problems this one may not be for you.
Step-ups are performed using a normal
bench (or sturdy chair if at home) 1-2
inches tall. Stand facing the bench, place
your right foot onto the bench and stand
as if going up a step, bringing the left foot
up and even. Keeping your weight on the
right foot, step back down with the left foot
and bring the right foot even with the left.
Repeat on the same side or alternate right
and left. Its important to keep the back
straight, shoulders over the hips, and stom-
ach muscles tight when
executing this move.
You can add resistance
with dumbbells or if
youre balance is really
good, place a weighted
bar across your back.
Do up to 2 sets, 10-1
repetitions each leg.
All these exercises can
help strengthen, shape,
and lift your derriere but
keep in mind that you
will only see a change in shape if you are
engaging in aerobic exercise and watching
your diet as well. Otherwise, youll be
frming up the muscles under the fat.
Save your money on gimmicks that prom-
ise to melt inches from your behind. Spot
reducing does not exist. These gadgets are
nothing but shams and many a fool has
had their wallets thinned by well-made
marketing schemes. Your best bet, as it
always has been, is to throw on the work-
out clothes and get your butt moving (no
pun intended).

CANT GET RId OF MY dARN
LOVE HANdLES
Ricky, I do what seems to be thousands
of crunches a day, and eat a pretty low
fat diet, yet I still cant get rid of my
darn love handles. HELP!
Doing side bends will help some. What-
ever exercises you do, I would suggest
that you avoid too much added
resistance. This could build
the muscle in the area and ac-
tually thicken the waist. What
you must do is to focus on
reducing overall body fat. Try
increasing your cardio activity
(i.e., bike or treadmill) to -
times per week for 2-0 min-
utes per session. Combine that
with a sensible diet of - small
meals per day, spaced about
three hours apart. Minimize carb
intake in your last two meals
or alternate them in each meal
throughout the day. Replace
these carbs with good protein
sources and fresh veggies. Hope
this helps. You may even try a
fat burner with the above sugges-
tions for an added kick.
WHICH KINd OF PRO-
TIEN POWdER?
As you know, there are a lot of
different protein powders on the
market today and I have heard a lot
of conficting reports on which type of
protein powder to take. Some people say
that whey protein is the ultimate protein
and others say that it is even better to
incorporate different sources of protein
into a shake. Based on your experience,
what do you fnd works best?
Great question. Hands down the best
protein I have ever used is Probolic-SR
by MHP.
Needless to say, protein powder is
an extremely important part of my daily
nutrition program. Because of this, I
have really tried to become as much of
an expert on protein as possible. I have
read a lot about the topic and have also
tried many different types of protein
powder. What I have found is that differ-
ent sources of protein have very impor-
tant differing characteristics.
1.They have different digestion rates
(Fast, Medium and Slow)
2.They have different levels of the
most critical muscle building amino
acids (Glutamine, Leucine, Isoleucine,
Valine and Arginine)
Digestion rates and muscle-build-
ing amino acids are of vital importance
because the whole idea behind building
muscle is to stay anabolic. Amino acids
create an anabolic environment and
prevent muscle tissue breakdown in the
body but the rate at which they enter and
exit the blood can determine how much
muscle you build.
Whey protein for example is an
excellent source of protein because it is
high in the critical muscle building ami-
no acids and digests and feeds muscle
the fastest. The only downside is that it
does this for a very short period of
time and then exits the body. Fast in
equals fast out. So while whey pro-
tein is great, it only keeps you ana-
bolic for a very short period of time.
Because of this, I always want to use
a protein powder that has whey pro-
tein for the fast release but also in-
corporates a blend of other proteins
such as Soy and Casein which have
high levels of the critical muscle
building amino acids but different
digestion rates than one another.
Soy protein happens to be richer in
Glutamine and Arginine than whey
protein and has a medium release
profle meaning that it digests at
a slower rate than whey but feeds
muscle tissue for a longer period
of time. Casein protein digests
the slowest, has a great mix of the
critical amino acids and happens
to last the longest in the body.
That is why my choice is

TRYING TO AdJUST MY dIET
TO PUT ON LEAN MUSCLE
MASS
I am 160lbs @ about 9 or 10% body fat.
I am trying to adjust my diet to put on
lean muscle mass. What should I include
in my diet and what supplements do you
suggest?
The key to gaining lean muscle mass is
to strategically increase your calories
over a set period of time. Determine the
number of calories you currently take in
per day on average. This is the average
calories your body demands to maintain
10lbs. Then begin increasing your
calories about 0-0 calories a week for
12 weeks. This will boost your caloric
intake to about 0 to 00 calories per
week. Training intensity should be mod-
erate using heavy poundage with a -
rep range. The next weeks maintain
new caloric intake and increase training
intensity, by decreasing poundage and
increasing reps from 12-1. Repeat the
cycle. When you increase your calories,
they should come from clean sources of
proteins, carbs, and essential fats. You
should be taking in about - meals per
day spaced 2- hours apart. Try to taper
down complex carbs in the evenings and
do more proteins and fbrous carbs. Be
sure to include essential fatty acids like
nuts a couple times per day. As for sup-
plements, I suggest a good creatine. A
mass powder can also be helpful if taken
consistently a couple of times per day.
But these shakes should not replace solid
food meals. They can accompany a meal
or be separate, your choice. I have gotten
exceptional lean weight gains in the off-
season from supplementing with MHPs
Up your Mass. So train hard, increase
calories, and add lean mass.

: I am one of those people who works a nine hour
day and then goes to the gym directly after work.
By the time I get 20 minutes into my workout I am
dead tired. Since I cant take any stimulants do you
have any advice for me?

: I can totally relate to your problem, Tammy.
I also work a ten hour day and then go directly
to the gym after work. You have few options which I
would recommend. My frst suggestion, which may not
be feasible, would be to take a 20 minute nap in your
car just prior to working out. My training partner gets
up at :00 am every morning, goes to work and trains
with me at :0pm everyday when he is done work.
Each evening, he takes a nap from :00 to :20 in his
car in the gym parking lot and manages to train very
hard each night. This may sound crazy, but I have tried
it a few times and the old power nap does do the
trick.
My next sug-
gestion would be to
shorten your work-
outs and train your
major body parts
on the weekends.
I would train your
legs and back on
Saturday and Sun-
day and train your smaller body parts during the week.
You may want to limit your workouts to minutes.
Finally, make sure you do your cardio after you train
with weights so you do not deplete all of your glycogen
stores in the frst 0 minutes of your workout.
Finally, some non-stimulant type supplements

: I have always wanted to do a bodybuilding com-
petition, but I have no idea where to start. What
are some of the things you suggest to get me started?

: Well Rob, there are a lot of different consider-
ations you must think about before competing.
My frst suggestion would be to go to a local show and
see what it is all about. This way, you will know the
general procedure and possibly what the judges are
looking for and what kind of shape you will need to be
in. My next suggestion would be to pick a show at least
12 weeks out and set specifc goals for yourself. Dont
pick a goal like I want to fnish at least frst or second
in my class. Set a goal like, I want to get my body fat
down to at least % three days prior to the show. Try
not to set any unreasonable goals for yourself because
your frst show is strictly a learning experience.
The next thing you need to do is buy a video
called Perfect Posing. This may be one of the most bor-
ing, repetitive tapes you ever watch, but it is essential
to learning how to pose properly. I recommend buying
this tape at least 12 weeks out and watch it over and
over again. If at all possible, video tape your posing at
least once per week so that you can see your progress
and view your weaknesses.
One of the biggest mistakes I see newcomers
make is to getting advice from too many different
sources. Try to fnd one or two successful bodybuild-
ers to help you. Any more than that and you will get
conficting opinions and then start to doubt yourself.
Remember what I said, your frst show is strictly a
learning experience.
Another mistake people make is to rely too heav-
ily on the scale. When it comes to bodybuilding, the
scale is virtually worthless. The judges have no idea
what you weigh when you are standing next to the
other competitors. Go by what the mirror tells you and
what your approximate body fat percentage is. Trust
me, I have seen some of the lightest heavyweights on
stage beat the heaviest guys in the class. It is all how
you look on stage, your conditioning, and the illusion
you present to the judges. I use the word illusion be-
cause everybody has weak points, so the idea is to hide
them on stage.
Finally, and this is very important, make sure
you have fun and be a good sport. Remember, the six
judges sitting in front of you do not determine your self
worth. They are doing the best job they can to judge the
show fairly and accurately. Of course, there is politics
involved in judgingand now that you know this in
advance just have fun! Be as polite and courteous to
all of the other competitors. They worked just as hard
as you did to be able to compete. If you do not fn-
ish where you thought, you should then keep smiling
and train that much harder for your next show. Trust
me, if you exhibit poor sportsmanship, the judges will
remember you not for your physique but for your nega-
tive attitude.
Bodybuilding can be a very fun and exciting hob-
by, so make the best of it and keep in mind that it does
not determine your self-worth.

under. The three best exercises to target
this area are hanging abs, roman chair abs,
or hip lifts on the foor. The main focus on
each of these exercises should be tilting
the hips under and contracting the abs in
towards the spine.

I know I am supposed to be eating
fber, but how much should I have
daily?
Answer:
Experts recommend approximately 2-
0 grams of fber daily. Most Americans
only get about 10-12 grams. Naturally

lem sometimes myself. Here
are three chair exercises you
can do at your desk to loosen
up and get the blood fowing
in your upper body.
1. Neck - Sit up straight tilt your right
ear to the right shoulder and press your
left arm down about degrees from the
shoulder. Lift your fngers and palm up
away from the foor for a more intense
stretch. You can also feel how the stretch
changes as you lift your arm up slowly to
horizontal and then back down towards
your waist. Take - breaths in each posi-
tion. Hold for about 20-0 seconds. Repeat
on the other side.
2. Back Move your chair away from
your desk about two feet. Start with your
feet fat on the foor hips width apart. Be-
gin with an inhale and allow your upper
body to bend forward at the hips about
degrees, hold this for 20 seconds. Spine re-
mains straight. Allow your upper body and
chest to round forward on top of the legs.
Let your hands hang down towards the
ground. If this is too strenuous then keep
your hands or elbows placed on your knees
until you are able to comfortable hang with
your hands touching the foor.
3. Shoulders Start with your chair about
2 feet away from the desk. Place your hand
on the top of the desk about shoulder width
apart. Press your chest forward towards
the ground. Hold for 0 seconds. Move
your hands out about two feet apart and
feel the stretch move more into the front
of the shoulder and chest. Hold here for
0 seconds or breaths.

My involvement with FAME is to in-
crease athlete participation, and to speak
for athletes that want to beneft from
their efforts and make this sport their

for the athletes, one that brings back the
sex appeal, health and aesthetics to the
sport that has been missing for the past
ten years. My involvement is to help cre-
ate a platform to launch new categories

maintain their health, and be-
come positive role models for

As a Pro athlete I com-
peted for over thirteen years
as well as for
seven years as an amateur winning
teenage Mr. Florida, Jr. Nationals and
Teen Mr. USA. I had the opportunity
to compete with the worlds best, and
was honored to win the Mens Open
Mr. USA, the Mr. America, achieved
two world records, competed in the
IFBB Mr. Olympia, and The Arnold
Classic.. I have been blessed with a long
and fruitful career as a Weider cover
model, writer and currently listed as
Joe Weiders Bodybuilding Historian. I
have seen the sport I love and devoted
my life to change drastically, to the
point that I gave up my contract and quit

fter 10 years of competing, and four
Top fnishes, New England ftness
star Dawn Butterfeld has fnally won
the Fitness America Pageant. Follow-
ing her disappointing fnish at last years Fitness
Universe Pageant in Miami, she soften her body,
polished the same routine and narrowly won the
show.
Following FUP, Dawn was shattered and com-
mented, Ive dreamed about this day but honestly
thought it would never come at this point in my ca-
reer. I am honored. And, it was a win well deserved
but a tough one considering that Dawn placed fourth
in the Fitness Round behind world class competitors
like FUP Champ Sheri Vucick, Canadian sensation
Vanda Hadarean and New England phenom Nikki
Bongiovanni.
In the Swimsuit Round, where Dawn brought
a new, softer and sexier look to the stage, and in
the Interview Round, she scored frst. One of the
most cherished parts of the show was when she
was announced the winner, the entire group of
competitors cheered for Dawn in recognition of
her great performance but, as well, her years of
perseverance and commitment to becoming the
worlds #1 ftness star.
When ftness star Vanda Hadarean took the
stage, you knew there was something more than
special about her. Her incredible body moves,
precision athletic prowess, effusive personality
and overall beauty. The , 112 lbs. Canadian
gymnastic coach demonstrated one of the most
dynamic performances ever seen on the FAP stage.
So superb was Vanda that she earned the highest
score in the Fitness Round and 2nd Place in the
Swimsuit Round. So, how did this former Roma-
nian, European and Olympic gymnastic medalist
fnish in rd Place? Vanda told us that not being a
native English speaker, she had a tough time with
the Interview Round. I really blew it!, she said.
Yes, even with just 10% of the total weighed score,
the interview is so important in selecting the overall
winner at all Fitness Universe Series shows.
