INTRODUCTION TO ASTROLOGY
Astrology has an illustrious history – spanning thousands of years and touching
the lives of people on many continents. It is widely believed that the ancient
tradition of Astrology has its roots in Babylon around 3000 BC. Here, as has so
often been the case in human history, man looked upward to the heavens in an
attempt to understand the world and his place in it.
This upward gaze drew the Babylonians to the discovery that it took twelve
lunar cycles, or months, for the sun to make a full rotation. On its journey the
sun passed through twelve different constellations of stars.
It was noted that the appearance of each of these constellations in the night sky
occurred at the same time every year and coincided with the progress of the
changing seasons. Early astrologers named the twelve constellations
accordingly. For example, the constellation visible during the rainy season was
aptly named Aquarius or “water bearer”. In this way the stars became a way of
recording time, making it possible – even desirable – to consult them on such
matters as when to plant crops or travel.
Perhaps more important from a modern astrological point of view was the desire
set in motion by the Babylonians to understand the relationship between celestial
bodies and earthly events. It was the passage of the sun, moon and planets
through the twelve constellations as they were seen from earth that formed the
basis of the Zodiac, which is Greek for “circle of animals”. The signs of the
Zodiac, or Sun Signs, correspond to the time of year in which the sun was
believed to reside in a given constellation.
Today Astrology makes use of a symbolic Zodiac based on the calendar year
rather than strictly adhering to the movement of the sun. It is divided into twelve
equal parts despite the fact that the sun does not spend equal time in each
constellation.
Each sign of the Zodiac is influenced by the energy of a ruling planet and is
grouped according to one of the four elements of life|: Earth, Water, Air or Fire.
For example, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are all Earth signs.
Modern Astrology is based on a study of the influence which each of the seven
original planets has on our characters. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars,
Jupiter and Saturn each govern one aspect of the personality. If one knows the
exact date, time and location of their birth, a natal chart can create a detailed,
personal analysis. Thanks to modern software programs, this is a fairly
straightforward procedure. Sun-sign Astrology is a simplified system which
looks at the basic personality profile associated with each of the Zodiac signs.
Today, you would be hard pressed to find a person who is not aware of the signs
of the Zodiac. This invasion of astronomy into popular culture attests to our
thirst for knowledge about ourselves. As the Ancients looked at the position of
the planets to establish a relationship between these and events on earth, so
modern Astrologers examine Sun signs in an effort to understand character.
Fire Element
Leo is controlled by the element of Fire. Fire signs are passionate, active,
adventurous, physical, and intense. As a Fire sign, Leo is dominant and
assertive. Leo has interests and pursuits that can become all-consuming, and Leo
is often dazzling to others. Leo is warm and friendly, but all Fire signs can be
angry and battle-ready.
Fixed Signs
Sun
Leo is ruled by the Sun, and this means that Leo is a source of power and energy
for all those around him. The Sun is a planet of health and healing, and the Sun
is a great source of creativity, especially for military or artistic pursuits. Leo is a
master of strategy and a big-picture thinker, and the Leo woman is a popular and
effective leader.
TRAITS OF THE LEO WOMAN
Leo women started their lives demanding attention from others. With a nurturing
parent, they were probably happy and cheerful babies, but with a neglectful
parent, they were probably extremely fussy. As children, Leo women were
probably called bossy, and other girls either loved them or hated them. Other
people seldom feel neutral about Leo women, and while most people love them,
those who don't like them REALLY don't like them.
Leo women are born to lead, but in many Western societies, leadership is viewed
as a masculine trait. The Leo woman's innate leadership skills may have been
discouraged in her youth, and so she may view herself as "defective". If she was
encouraged to be a leader, she's much more likely to have a rather substantial
ego.
The greatest danger with Leo women is that they will face opposition from
social norms. This presents an internal conflict for the Leo woman, as Leo
doesn't like to change social norms but to excel within them. Logically, Leo
women do the best when they're feminists, but emotionally, fighting for a change
to the status quo is difficult.
A Leo woman who grows up in an environment of feminism and equality is
likely to excel and succeed, but Leo women who grow up in an atmosphere of
latent or overt misogyny may feel conflicted and confused throughout their lives.
Leo women like to win. It doesn't matter if it's a science fair, a salary
negotiation, or a basketball game; Leo loves to get that prize and that
recognition. Leo women often have a natural affinity for art and music, and
some Leo women excel at science and mathematics, but here again, Western
social programming can sometimes damage a Leo woman's normal sense of
worth and self-esteem.
As a Cardinal sign, Leo women don't like to upset the status quo. Since they do
tend to be outwardly successful or at least to pursue success, drastic changes in
society or economic structures can make them quite nervous. Leo women can
make wonderful entrepreneurs, but if entrepreneurship is not common in their
social community, it's unlikely that a Leo woman would consider something so
nontraditional.
In general, Leos tend to think big. They don't build a small "mom" business; they
take the reins of a Fortune 500 company. They're very good at mobilizing and
motivating people, so they usually have a strong following to help them
accomplish their goals, but their goals are never small. Sometimes, a Leo's goals
and ambitions may be extremely large, and the Leo may feel overwhelmed by
the magnitude of making it happen. This may cause Leo to perpetually
underachieve, especially if surrounded by a chorus of voices urging her to "be
reasonable".
Leo doesn't do "reasonable". Leo does flashy, showy, fun, exciting, and above
all else, BIG! Because Leo is a big-picture thinker, Leo does best to surround
herself with those who are better able to focus on the details. Leo is great at
visualizing where she wants to go, but she's not always gifted with finding
directions on how to get there.
THE LEO WOMAN AND ROMANCE
Unlike most signs, Leo has no trouble attracting potential partners. Leo might
tend toward polyamory, but Leo can easily be faithful if she chooses to. Leo is
very protective of those around her, but Leo's ego fortunately prevents her from
being too bummed if a relationship doesn't work out. After all, there are usually
several other beaus waiting in the wings!
Leo is the chooser instead of the chosen. Leo often has many options in
romance, but frequently the prospective partners make the mistake of trying to
force a Leo woman to change. Leo women are perfect the way they are (at least
in their own minds!), and they're not going to be bullied, manipulated, or nagged
by anybody.
In the bedroom, Leo women never have complaints! Leo is one of the signs most
admired for sexual stamina, creativity, and passion. Leo women satisfy their
partners, but they can sometimes overwhelm them. Leo has a strong sense of
self, and insecure men may find her intimidating.
Leo women have exceptionally high standards. Not only do they want a partner
who will adore them, they want a partner they can be proud of. The status of
their partner is a sign of their own social status, so Leo wants a partner who is
attractive, successful, and powerful in his own right.
Leos are sometimes accused of being shallow and caring too much about
outward appearances, but that's not really true. When it comes to selecting a
mate, Leo wants a mate that OTHER people find desirable, and Leo understands
that physical attractiveness is a trait that society finds desirable.
THE LEO WOMAN AND COMPATIBILITY IN LOVE
Leo is the life of the party, and everyone adores her. In order for her to have a
true friendship, she must accept another person as her equal or even her superior,
and this type of acceptance is hard for a Leo. Often, Leo's best and closest
friends are former enemies. Once the Leo learns to respect someone, it's a short
step for Leo to build a friendship with them.
The ideal friends for a Leo woman are Libra, Scorpio, and Capricorn. Leo would
benefit greatly from Capricorn's detail-oriented perspective, and Scorpio is a
master at hidden social interactions that Leo can sometimes be confused by.
Scorpio is also a natural cynic, so a Scorpio friend can help to guard Leo from
those with hidden agendas. Libra is a greatly supportive and encouraging friend,
so Leos would do well to have more people like that in their lives.
CAREER CHOICES FOR THE LEO WOMAN
Leo is a bit arrogant, and so the Leo woman will not tolerate being a low-grade
peon for very long. Leo loves to lead and to be admired, so Leos make fabulous
creative types, especially in theater, acting, music, and dance. Leos tend to seek
the spotlight, so the Leo creative is more at home on stage than working as a
stagehand or sound engineer. These skills can help to complement Leo's creative
abilities, but they won't satisfy Leo's needs and desires on a long-term basis.
Leos often excel in science and technical fields, but careers must provide an
opportunity for the approval and praise of others in order to keep a Leo woman
fulfilled. Any leadership position in any industry will suit the Leo woman's
personality well.
Because Leo women are notorious for building a following, any career that relies
on or encourages popularity is an option for her. Political positions and teaching
(but only at higher levels, usually college and above) are a great fit, and public
speaking or even writing can be fields where Leo can excel. The practice of law
is also a good fit for Leo, as Leo loves to maintain the status quo and thus will
often have a strong sense of justice. A legal career can also transition into
politics or public speaking.
Leo women often excel in the military, rising to high rank. The military in most
developed nations is a very particular environment. There's a codified hierarchy,
and Leo understands hierarchy well. Promotion and advancement up to a certain
level is a direct result of merit, which Leo appreciates because she has the
natural leadership ability to progress very well. Leo can even make a wonderful
battlefield superior, although her expertise lies in her ability to learn from
military figures of the past rather than to engage in unconventional or
unorthodox warfare.
THE LEO WOMAN AND HEALTH
Leo wants to be physically active, but Leos can sometimes have a tendency to
eat too much, particularly of fatty and sugary foods. Leos would benefit from
watching their diets, and sports or competitive fitness events are an excellent
choice for physical activity. High-status individual sports like fencing or
gymnastics may attract Leos, and martial arts are often a favorite of Leos. Leo
women in particular would benefit greatly from martial arts or boxing, as it helps
to provide a sense of mastery and self-defense training that makes Leo women
feel powerful and capable.
Leos can be prone to infection, perhaps from all the people they meet.
Cleanliness and personal hygiene are seldom a problem for Leo, although they
sometimes avoid doctor visits. Leos do not like to confess their weaknesses to
others, even to medical professionals. Leos have a high pain threshold, but they
will complain loudly about anything that causes them discomfort.
Leo women are usually pretty healthy, especially if they watch their diets. The
most common concerns with Leos are on their extremities, like muscle tears and
broken bones. This is usually the result of the Leo's "take no prisoners" approach
to sports and physical activity, which can cause Leos to push through an injury
or exacerbate a sprain. Leos are also likely to develop high blood pressure,
especially if their diets are not carefully maintained.
