Assignment Questions

(Write down the answers in A4 size paper and submit the hard copy to me on 9 th
May. Please give a proper cover page of your assignment with your name and ID
and staple the pages before submitting the same to me. No assignments will be
accepted in any other paper apart from A4 sized paper.)
1. In order to find the correlation coefficient between two variables x and y from 12 pairs
of observations, the following calculations were made:
∑x = 30, ∑x 2 = 670, ∑y=5, ∑y 2 =285, ∑ xy = -334
on subsequent verification. It was found that the pair (x=11, y=4) was copied wrongly,
the correct value being (x=10, y=14). Find the correct value of the correlation
coefficient.

2. Over a period of one year, a greengrocer sells tomatoes at six different prices (x pence
per kilogram). He calculates the average number of kilograms, y, sold per day at each
of the six different prices. From these data, the following are calculated:
∑x = 200, ∑x 2 = 7250, ∑y=436, ∑y 2 =39234, ∑ xy = 12515 and n = 6.
Find the value of the correlation coefficient.

3. Calculate the coefficient of correlation between X and Y as indicated below:

X: 25 30 28 29 32 24 36 28 27 21
Y: 18 20 21 16 14 13 22 15 19 12
Specify also the strength of the association.

4. Ten students got the following marks in Mathematic and Statistics:

Students: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Marks in Statistics: 50 88 90 55 64 34 25 44
Marks in Mathematics: 34 72 85 44 70 30 28 38
Calculate Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.

5. Find the standard deviation of the following distribution:

X 0-500 500-1000 1000-1500 1500-2000 2000-3000
Frequency 90 218 86 41 15

6. Compute the standard deviation of the following data:

Weekly wages in Rs Number of Men
30 and under 40 8
40 and under 50 12
50 and under 60 6
60 and under 70 4
70 and under 80 10

7. Compute the standard deviation of income from the following data:

Income Below 200-399 400-599 600-799 800-999 1000-
(in Rs) 200 1199
No. of 25 72 47 22 13 7

Grades 30-39 40-49 50-59 60-69 70-79 80-89 90-99
Frequency 2 3 11 20 32 25 7

9. The following data gives the hardness (x) and tensile strength (y) for some specimens
of a material in certain units. Find the correlation coefficient from the following data:
X 23.3 17.5 17.8 20.7 18.1 20.9 22.9 20.8
Y 4.2 3.8 4.6 3.2 5.2 4.7 4.4 5.6
