Aggragates and Tests On Aggregates

The document discusses different types of aggregates used in construction including their classification, properties and testing. It describes fine and coarse aggregates, normal and lightweight aggregates. It also explains various tests conducted on aggregates like specific gravity, crushing value, impact and abrasion tests.

Aggregates
➢ Comprises 55% of volume of mortar (fine
aggregate size<4.5mm) and 85% volume
of concrete (up to aggregate size 200 mm).
➢ They give body to the concrete and reduce
shrinkage.
➢ Broadly aggregates are classified into two
categories:-
1. Fine aggregate (>0.075 mm & passing
through 4.75mm)
2. Coarse aggregate(retained on 4.75 mm
sieve & <80mm)
Types of aggregates
1. Normal weight aggregates
• Natural-Sand, Gravel, Crushed Rocks such as Granite, Quartzite,
Basalt, Sandstone,
• Artificial- Broken Brick, Air-cooled Slag, Sintered fly ash, Bloated
clay
2. Light weight aggregates
3. Heavy weight aggregates
Physical Properties of
Aggregates:
1. Bulk density and Voids – 1400 to 1900 kg/ m3
2. Specific Gravity – 2.6 to 3.5
3. Particle Shape and Surface Texture - angular
4. Absorption and Surface Moisture
5. Resistance to Freezing and Thawing
6. Strength- Crushing value, Impact and Abrasion test
Uses of aggregates In different
works
Weight Examples of Uses for the
Aggregates used Concrete
Ultra-lightwei Vermiculite, ceramic Can be sawed or nailed, also used
ght for its insulating properties
Lightweight Expanded clay, shale or slate, Used primarily for making
crushed brick Lightweight concrete for
Structures, also used for its
Insulating properties
Normal Crushed limestone, river Used for normal concrete
weight sand, gravel, crushed recycled Projects
Concrete
Heavyweight Steel or iron shot; steel Used for making high density
Or iron pellets concrete for shielding against
nuclear radiation
Testing of aggregates
● Test for Determination of Flakiness Index.
● Test for Determination of Elongation Index.
● Test for Determination of fineness modulus.
● Test for Determination of Specific Gravity and Moisture
content.
● Test for Determination of Bulk Density and Voids.
● Test for determination of aggregate crushing value.
● Test for determination of aggregate impact Value.
● Test for determination of aggregate abrasion value.

2. Flakiness Index and Elongation
Index
1. Elongation guage
E.I. = (W1/W2) x 100
Where,
W1 is weight of aggregate
retained on length gauge.
W2 is total weight of aggregate.

2. Flakiness guage
F.I. = (W1/W2) X 100
Where,
W1 is weight of aggregate
passing through the slot of
thickness gauge.
W2 is the total weight of sample
3.Specific Gravity

Specific gravity= (W2 – W1) / [(W4–1)-(W3-W2)]

4. Aggregate crushing value

Aggregate crushing value = (W2 x 100) / (W1-W)

W2 =Weight of fraction passing through the appropriate
sieve
W1-W =Weight of surface dry sample.
• The aggregate crushing value shall not exceed 30%
5. Aggregate impact value.
impact value = (W2/W1) x
100
– Where, W1 is total weight
of dry sample
– W2 is weight of portion
passing through 2.36 mm
sieve.
Aggregate Classification
Impact Value
<20% Exceptionally
Strong
10 – 20% Strong
20-30% Satisfactory for
road surfacing
>35% Weak for road
surfacing
6. Aggregate abrasion value

Abrasion Value = (W1 – W2 ) / W1 X 100

Where Original weight of aggregate sample = W1 g
Weight of aggregate sample retained = W2 g
Weight passing 1.7mm IS sieve = W1 – W2 g

● Maximum abrasion value ranges between 30 % to 60 % for various

pavement types.
