Check that Tool!

Direction: Identify which of the following tools in the checklist below are used in computer
hardware servicing.

How did you know that those tools are used for computer hardware servicing? As a computer
technician, is it important to identify what are the tools being used in computer hardware
servicing? Why?

3
Learn about It!

As a computer technician, it is important to identify the various tools and equipment in

computer hardware servicing. Just like with doctors and soldiers, it is not possible to render
our duties properly if there are no tools.

Hand Tools and Equipment in Computer Hardware Servicing

Tools are widely used to make a particular task easy to accomplish. In computer hardware
servicing, there are various tools that we can use to carry out our tasks: hand tools and power
tools. The hand tools are the tools that are manually operated by hands and do not require
electricity to operate. On the other hand, according to petropedia, power tools are devices
that are activated by a power source apart from manual labor.

In computer hardware servicing, tools have three main functions, namely: to clean, to
diagnose, and to repair.

Hand Tools
These are the tools used to cut, hold, loosen, tighten, and repair components in the computer.
The following are examples of hand tools:

● Flat head screwdriver. It is a type of screwdriver used to loosen and tighten slotted
screws.

● Phillips head screwdriver. It is a type of screwdriver used to loosen and tighten cross-
head or phillips screw.

4
● Wire cutter. It is a tool used to cut and strip wires.

● Tweezer. This is a tool used to pick up and hold small components or objects in the
computer.

● Three-Pronged Parts Retriever. This is also known as pearl-catcher. It is used to

retrieve small pieces components such as screws.

5
Cleaning Tools
These are the tools used to clean computer hardwares. It is important to clean the computer
hardware regularly to avoid accumulation of dust and dirt which is one of the causes of
damage in computers. Below are examples of cleaning tools.

● Lint-free cloth. This is a special type of cloth that is used to clean components of
computers without scratching it.

● Compressed air. It is used to blow away dust and debris in the computer without
touching any hardware.

6
● Cable ties. It is used to tie and organize cables in the computer.

Diagnostic Tools
These are the tools used to test the condition of components in the computer. It is very
essential to check the conditions of the components regularly to identify whether a
component is still in good condition, needs repair, or is for replacement. The following are
examples of commonly used diagnostic tools in computer hardware servicing:

● Multimeter. This is also known as VOM or volt-ohm-milliammeter. It is a tool used to

test the integrity of circuits and components.

7
● Loopback adapter. This is used to test the functionality of computer ports such as
audio and video ports.

Assessment of Tools in Computer Hardware Servicing

Assessing the condition of the tools in computer hardware is very important. A tool in good
condition may result in a good quality of repair but a tool in bad condition may compromise
the computer components and the safety of the technician.

The inspection of the tools should be done before and after its use. It uses various
assessment tools to determine whether the tool is in good condition, in need of repair, or in
need of replacement. There are also assessment tools that are used to determine if there are
risks present in using a specific hand tool.

8
Assessment of tools can also be done by classifying whether a tool is functional or
nonfunctional. Functional tools are tools that are able to perform their functions well. On the
other hand, nonfunctional tools are tools that are not able to perform their functions due to
damage or impairment.

Nonfunctional tools can be determined through the following factors:

● Visual inspection. Nonfunctional tools can be determined by observing the

appearance of the tool or equipment. In inspecting visually, you have to check the
following:

○ Deformations. This is when a tool is different from its original shape or form.

○ Loose components. Make sure that all of the parts of the tool are intact. Loose
components might cause a risk to the user.

● Functionality. Any discrepancies in the tool such as vibration or noise mean that there
is a problem with the tool.

● Performance. Make sure that the tool performs its function well. If there is something

9
wrong with the tool, it might need a repair or replacement.

Maintenance of Computer Tools

To prevent any damage to the tools, maintaining the computer tools should be done regularly.
There are different ways to maintain tools in computer hardware servicing, namely:

● Cleaning. It is removing dirt such as rust on hand tools. Cleaning of tools can be done
by washing, wiping, or brushing.

● Tightening. It is checking that the bolts and screws in tools are intact.

10
● Lubricating. It is putting a lubricating material such as grease or oil to ensure smooth
movement.

● Calibration. It is adjusting a part of a tool to ensure a perfect fit or accurate

measurement. Example is adjusting the pin of multimeter to attain accurate
measurement.

Try It!

Your supervisor assigned you to inspect materials in the storage room. You will need to fill in
the evaluation form with the classification of the tool and the type of maintenance it needs
(cleaning, tightening, lubricating, calibration) according to the description indicated below.

11
EVALUATION FORM

Name of Technician: _____________________________

Date: _________________________________
Tool Name Classification Description Type of Maintenance
Needed

Wire cutter The grip is hard to move

due to friction

Multimeter The pin does not reflect

accurate measurement

Pliers The pivot point is loosened.

Lint-free cloth The cloth is full of dirt.

Check Up

To check your understanding, answer the questions below:

A. Fill in the requisition form below by writing the code, the item name, and the

Big Idea

Preparation, inspection, and maintenance are very important factors that we should consider
before and after using tools to carry out our task. Just like in our daily lives, these three factors
are very important.

In real life, preparation is necessary to succeed in life. There is a cliche that says, “ if we fail to
plan, we plan to fail.” Inspection or testing is very important, too. In all of our adventures in
life, always make safety as your first priority. Just like tools, you deserve maintenance, too. Do
anything that makes you stress-free and healthy. Always have your time to rest.

Wrap Up
