The document discusses the importance of safety barriers in maritime environments and how they are addressed in safety investigations. Safety barriers act as the first line of defense against hazards and help prevent accidents by limiting unauthorized access and risks. They communicate hazards and aid in crowd control. A safety investigation analyzes how safety barriers failed and determines if accidents could have been prevented.

Assignment
 Introduction
The focus of this assignment is to study the importance of safety barriers in our
maritime environment. They play in a vital role not only for preventing the loss
of lives and property caused by unauthorized disaster but also to reduce the
futher incidents and accidents.

 Why are safety barriers an important aspect of every safety investigation?

Safety barriers are essential components for maritime industry who use
perimeter safety systems. They act as the first line defence against
unauthorized risks and hazards to protect crews and operations onboard.
When human-induced hazards were created, safety barriers were
implemented to prevent accidents caused by these hazards. The main target
of every safety investigation leads to analyze how the safety system fails and
when the safety barriers broken. During marine safety investigations,
investigators trying their best to determine whether an accident would have
occurred in the absence of specific errors and/or system malfunctions. To
determine if a mariner’s error led to an accident, investigators must have
sufficient evidence to allow a determination that without that error the
accident would not have occurred. The ultimate purpose of a maritime safety
investigation is to advance maritime safety and protection of the maritime
environment through a systematic safety investigation of marine causalities
and incidents. These marine safety investigations should result in an
increased awareness which should result in the saving of lives, ships, cargo
and the protection of the marine environment, improvements to the lives of
marine personnel, and safer shipping operations.
 Which safety barriers are addressed in safety investigation?
Risk mitigation: Acting as the frontline defence mechanism, safety barriers
are pivotal in pre-empting an array of potential hazards. By preventing
unauthorized access to dangerous areas, safety barriers limit the entry of
personnel to certain zones or areas.
Crowd control: Safety barriers aid in maintain order and safety during
operations, especially in areas with high foot traffic or movement of
equipment. By clearly marking boundaries and restricted zones, they prevent
overcrowding and facilitate smooth movement within the facility.
Hazard communication: Often, these barriers are equipped with signage or
warnings that communicate specific risks or dangers in the area. Whether it’s
a warning about high voltage, slippery surfaces or restricted access due
ongoing operations, these signs add an extra layer of protection by informing
personnel about the potential risks.
Risk assessment: A risk assessment is process used to identify potential
hazards and analyze what could happen if a disaster or hazard occurs.
Rules and regulations, policy, safety management systems and safety
cultures are also considered as the safety barriers in safety investigations.
 Conclusion
Therefore every single member of maritime industry must follow the
procedures of SMS and consider the importance of safety barriers to prevent
futher accidents and loss of lives at sea.
