Assignment 1

1) Consider light strikes a glass plate making an angle of 33o with the glass surface. If the
reflected and refracted beams make an angle of 90o with each other, what is the refractive
angle of the glass? What is the critical angle for the glass?

𝜃 = 33°
As 𝜃𝑖 > 𝜃𝑡 so 𝑛1 < 𝑛2
From Snell’s law
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃𝑖 𝑛2 sin 57° 0.838
= = = = 1.54
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃𝑡 𝑛1 sin 33° 0.544
𝑛1 1
sin 𝜃𝑐 = = = 40.47°
𝑛2 1.54

2) A point source of light is 12 cm below the surface of a large body of water (n =1.33 for
water). What is the radius of the largest circle on the water surface through which the
light can emerge?

When 𝜃𝑖 > 𝜃𝑐 , the wave will be reflected

and can’t be seen.
𝑛2 1
sin 𝜃𝑐 = = = 48.75°
𝑛1 1.33
12
𝑡𝑎𝑛42° = 0.9 = ⇒ 𝑟 = 13.3𝑐𝑚

3) The optical cavity of a Fabry-Perot optical resonator has a length of 200 micron, and
the reflectance on the end mirrors of 0.9. If the index of refraction of the cavity is 3.7
calculate the cavity mode nearest to the free space of 1300 nm. What is separation mode?
What is the spectral width?

4) Also answer the following question from the textbook:

1.18)
1.21)
1.24)
𝐸𝑟0,⊥ 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖 −[𝑛2 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃𝑖 ]1/2
𝑟⊥ = =
𝐸𝑖0,⊥ 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖 +[𝑛2 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃𝑖 ]1/2 𝑟 = |𝑟|exp⁡(−𝑗𝜑 )
𝐸𝑟0,∥ [𝑛2 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃𝑖 ]1/2 − 𝑛2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖 𝑛2 1
𝑟∥ = = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃𝑐 = = = 43.98°
𝐸𝑖0,∥ [𝑛2 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃𝑖 ]1/2 + 𝑛2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖 𝑛1 1.44
𝑛1 (1.44) > 𝑛2 (1)
if r is a positive real value then 𝜑 = 0
if r is a negative real value then 𝜑 = 180

Ex: calculating for 𝜃𝑖 = 40°

𝑟⊥ = 0.49

𝑟∥ = −0.16

For incident angle > critical angle you can also use:

1 1 [𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃𝑖 − 𝑛2 ]1/2
tan ( ∅∥ + 𝜋) =
2 2 𝑛2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖
1 [𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝜃𝑖 − 𝑛2 ]1/2
2
tan ( ∅⊥ ) =
2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖
