Promoting A Domain Controller
Promoting A Domain Controller
involves configuring it to manage Active Directory services. Here are the steps
to promote a server to a domain controller:
1. Verify Prerequisites:
o Before promoting a server, ensure that it meets the system
requirements.
o Verify application compatibility and review recommendations for
moving to a newer version of Windows Server.
o Check security settings and connectivity to the target server.
o Ensure availability of the necessary Flexible Single Master
Operation (FSMO) roles in Active Directory.
2. Login and Open Server Manager:
o Log in to the server where the Active Directory Domain Services
(AD DS) role has been installed using an account that’s a member
of the local administrator’s group.
o Open Server Manager.
3. Promote the Server:
o Click the Notifications icon (looks like a flag) next to
the Manage menu.
o Select Promote this server to a domain controller.
o The Active Directory Domain Services Configuration
Wizard will start.
4. Choose Deployment Configuration:
o Select whether you’re adding a new domain controller to an
existing domain or creating a new forest.
o Specify the domain name and credentials
(e.g., Administrator, Domain Administrator, or other roles).
o Choose whether to install DNS and make the server a Global
Catalog (recommended).
5. Set DSRM Password:
o Set a Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM) password. This
password is crucial for disaster recovery.
o Document this password securely.
6. Configure DNS Options:
o If you’re not using a parent zone, you might see a warning. You
can usually ignore this.
o Specify whether Active Directory can replicate from any domain
controller or a specific one.
7. Review and Install:
o Review the summary of selected options.
o Adjust any settings if needed.
o Windows will perform a prerequisites check.
8. Completion:
o If everything checks out, the installation will proceed.
o The server will restart.
o Log in with the domain administrator account.
